Am I the onloy one who finds the downloading of torrents essentially impossible?

on Tuesday, August, 21, 2012 10:44 PM
Yeah, in practical terms I know that torrents are supposed to be a fast and convenient way to download files or sets of files, so I went ahead and wadd into these waters. First I had to find and download a client. After thirteen years on the net, I haver come to know that the world "client" usually means "bullshit jumping through several hoops", which it did in this case as well. Then, even though I looked online to find out just how this ais all supposed to work, I couldn't find jack as to how to actually USE a client and download things to it. Most of the articles I came across use the very words to describe the process that I am looking to have defined. Nothing out there for a rank amateur like me, a newcomer to the world of torrents. I had to go to the library and have one of their employees walk me through it, which wasn't much fun since they can't help you download or set up to download anything which in any way might violate a copyright of any kind. They just described every torrent on the web in some way.

So I finally get all that together and am ready to download a few torrents. Only.......they don't download. None of them. Oh, I know they're *supposed* to download, and the status bar in the client program window says "downloading", but the "percent downloaded" bar just sort of....sits there. Never really downloading anything. Not unless you have until the SUN BURNS OUT to wait for them to complete, and unless a torrent downloads completely, most of them are totally useless (programs, movies, etc). JFC do I miss the days when you just sort of, well, downloaded things from the net (and here's an idea!) to your computer instead of having to navigate some effing Byzantine goat-sacrifice convolution to get what you're looking for. And when you download something, half the time it comes through not as a torrent file but as an .exe file, without telling you, and getting one open or started from the client itself is a pain in the ass handcrafted in the fires of hello by the Dark Lord of the Abyss to make humanity suffer.

So screw torrents. Another technology that looks great on paper but in the real world is pretty much useless. (I've been waiting for twenty sets of suicide girl photoshoots to download for the past two hours.)

Okay, first off, a torrent is not a type of file on the internet that magically allows you to bypass any and all copyright laws or whatever. A torrent is a reference file. It "points" towards the file you want to download. So if you're downloading a torrent of, lets say for example's sake, Tron Legacy, and the torrent contains a single file (we'll call it TronLegacy.AVI), the TronLegacy.torrent file you download contains nothing more than a few lines of text that tell your computer to look for a file being hosted on a server somewhere called "TronLegacy.AVI".

Now, that's what a .torrent file is. Here's how they work:

.torrent files are opened in client programs. A client program, such as BitTorrent or uTorrent, is a program specifically designed to download your torrent. However, while you download a torrent, your computer also sends that downloaded data to anyone else downloading that specific torrent, hence why the .torrent file points towards the main file, and doesn't actually contain the file itself. But why do torrents work like this instead of just letting you download the file from a main server?

Because everyone who is actively downloading that torrent is also hosting everything they've downloaded, your download speed is faster when there are more people downloading that file. It's like the opposite of a traditional download. The file is in one place for everyone to grab, and it downloads slower if more people are trying to download it at the same time. Torrents, however, will download faster if more people are downloading it, because you have more computers transferring all the content to you at the same time. That said, torrents are much slower when fewer people are using them.

From a tech support viewpoint, though, make sure your torrent client is running in administrator mode if you're on Windows Vista or 7, and also make sure that your firewall program is allowing your torrent program to access the internet. Also keep in mind that because most people assume that torrents are a magical download that gives you free stuff, some internet service providers actually block torrent downloads, which is pretty unfortunate for people who have games that patch themselves through torrents.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Thanks. I'll withhold all other complaints until I've tried that. I know a torrent is not a file,. but rath....forget it, I'll follow your advice and see what happens. Thanks.

but of course I just use Linux now....

After downloading BitTorrent client, just go to www.kat.ph for practically anything you want.

The sharing of websites that distribute illegal software downloads is against Tron Sector's user policies. I recommend you edit your post to remove that link.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

That website does not distribute software downloads, illegal or otherwise, nor does it distribute links to software downloads, illegal or otherwise. It is simply a search engine for torrents.

You might as well tell people not to post the address for www.google.com.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Well, I didn't actually go to that site, and since you said to go there "for anything you want", I assumed that it was a website that specialized in unauthorized software redistribution.

I'd still recommend removing that link if you don't want to risk being banned.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

No risk, no reward. A good analogy would be to say that you can download the whole soundtrack for Legacy off of YouTube. There really is a good channel on there that has all the tracks and even the bonus tracks that don't appear on the original soundtrack.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would say you can't mention YouTube. You can't just go there and click on a magic button and get whatever you want. If you do find that channel you still have to jump through some hoops to download the tracks, but it is doable.

Definitely one of those grey areas, I agree, but still not crossing that proverbial line IMO. Same thing with Kickass Torrents (kat.ph). Go there, run a search, click on link, download a .torrent file, you still got nadda.
