A conversation: Is it even possible to write a program like the MCP?

on Friday, December, 16, 2011 12:04 AM
So since I've seen some rather awesome conversations here I wanted to see if I could spark another. I have no idea if this topic will interest anyone but let me get started and let's se where this goes, if any where, if not I'll go down in Tron-Sector history as a Tron addict who cracked and went loony.

So the MCP is a program that absorbes other programs to learn - Viruses in the real world, sort of do this, only in reverse, they attach their program code to an EXE then patch the .EXE to first execute the virus code, then the normal program code. In theory, this process could be reversed and the "MCP" could attach itself to a program and instead of altering the program code it could copy it.

There are lots of places on the web that talk about AI code, it's a possiblity for sure, it's all around us in games and what not for pathing, enemy combat, etc... The key difference I think is "self-learning." Current AI code bases require the AI to be "trained" it cannot self-train - but maybe there is a way to accomplish that programtically?

What do you guys think?

I am pretty sure that AI is only in sci-fi right now. But you never know what people have developed...

Artificial intelligence has been around in real life for a long time, though not quite to MCP or other sci-fi robot/computer AIs. I think the closest we've ever come to sci-fi AI levels of creepiness is Peter Molenux's canceled "Milo and Kate" project for Xbox 360. It would use voice recognition and data taken in from the Kinect camera to determine the reactions of a virtual child. It would then store those reactions to an online database that the game would be able to access to more effectively choose realistic responses. It wasn't pre-programmed stuff, it was like an actual human child and it was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen. It's a shame it was canceled.

On a lower scale, artificial intelligence is in almost every video game ever. Call of Duty enemies take cover when shot at and Metal Gear Solid enemies chase you when the see you. That's all AI.

Wow, great question.

We do have A.I., not as complex just yet, but when it comes to the MCP's functions.

The MCP started out as a chess program, then Dillinger changed the code. I'm guessing it just started with an A.I. appropration script and eventually it got better and better at obsorbing functions until it sort of developed that malevolent personality.

I'm pretty positive programs can grab functions, not so much anything else.

WOW that sounds amazing and creepy at the same time!
Why did the end up canceling the Milo and Kate project by the way?
Just to scary for the children or what?

Thanks for posting this. Though, why would we want to create an MCP? That's the real question. I admit, it's fascinating indeed, and I know scientists are interested in developing realistic AIs to further understand ourselves - but seriously, once we do it, it's too late to say "I told you so".

Well, we would of course build controls to allow us to override the MCP and gain control in the event we lost it. Like a self-destruct or something.
