I'd like to get more clarification on what Kat was saying.

Here's my understanding.

Superficially, it is all the same baton.

A baton is used to form light cycles, light swords, light fighters, light nunchaka, even the sentry staffs (possibly).

A key question for me is whether or not the form of the device is hard-coded to the baton, or if the same baton can be used to form different weapons/machines?

We know the device itself is created from the energy of the program, but how limited are the forms? Can additional designs can be added to the same baton?

From the Master/Student relationship between Quorra and Kevin, I formed an impression that Kevin has taught Quorra to make the Katana from her baton

Sadly, we never see Quorra form a light cycle, or any other weapon from her baton so we can't assume much else about it. We never see Sam make a sword, and despite the toy Clu figure, we never see Clu make a sword.

We know that Rinzler carries two batons, and we've seen him form both light cycles and light fighters with his batons. The fight that Clu and Rinzler have over Rinzler's spare baton is particularly interesting. Clu grabs it and (I think) forms a Clu-style Light Fighter, not a Rinzler-style light fighter. This would seem to suggest that the program creating the weapon/vehicle has some control over the design.

Similar line of evidence is that Clu's personal Dueling Batons formed an armored cycle for Clu, but just a standard cycle for Sam... So even if the design was coded to the baton, the program still controls the form it takes.

Art of Tron has little to say about this, but I think the hardware section of the official T:L website talks about it.

It does seem all tools are formed from the same baton... it doesn't seem Rinzler's two batons are dedicated for different things.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain that batons seem to be universal, considering that you would think at least some programs would customize a baton to be exclusive to them, or more so (and I'd think both Clu and Rinzler would fall into that camp). But it doesn't seem that way. Something basic must be coded in, though, because Sam wouldn't know how to specify what sort of light cycle he wanted. Perhaps it's programmed with a basic code and each program/person who uses it can set an intention for it as they rez it up?

And, I know we've had the debate before about whether you can rez up ANYTHING you want, or if each item has to be coded in somehow (the debate, I think, was whether anybody could get a light jet, or just Clu and his crew).

I was actually thinking about that and talking about it with some folks as I was writing, because in my fic Tron shows my OP how to use a disc and a cycle. And he tells her that his cycle is highly-customized but the one he has her using is pretty basic ("not too much power" he says); it'd be like him having some 1600cc superbike and putting her on a 250cc. But the thing is, in a couple spots I have him rezzing up her cycle herself from her baton--when they first start, so he can show her all the controls, and then later, because she takes a hard fall the first time she rezzes it up (that's got to be hard to learn if your first experience with it is hitting the ground at top speed) so the next time he does it for her and then hands it over. But then later (after she notes that the lightcycle feels different than the lightrunner she's been driving, that it "almost feels like it's a part of me") he explains to her that “That's because it is. The difference between a static vehicle like a light runner, and a program-oriented one like a cycle, is that the cycle is generated from you. That's why you can't just rez it up and then climb on. It has to form in response to your own energy and processes. It pulls part of its being from you. If I took your baton, it would be a cycle with the same configuration as your baton is set for, but it wouldn't quite be the same. Any non-static cycle-- or really any weapon or tool-- created by you is going to respond best to you.”

So I think I'm going to go back and rewrite the first part, because I think what he says might be more accurate-- he can't rez up a cycle himself and hand it over and have her drive it (his last sentence implies that maybe he could and it just wouldn't work optimally/quite right, but I think I'm going to change that too). If a baton tool is run by the energy of the program creating it, then Quorra probably can't rez up a katana and toss it to Sam-- it'd probably disappear as soon as it left her hand, right?

(Although I think that still did have me assuming that the tool was coded to the specific baton--if Tron rezzed up a cycle from my OP's baton, it would be the basic one, and I suppose similarly if she'd done the same from his it would've been his ultra-customized model. But obviously as you pointed out, it doesn't seem to matter-- the configuration comes from the individual program, rather than being coded into the baton itself)

So, yeah. To make a long story short... I'm still trying to figure out myself how baton tools might work, exactly.
