It's fiber-optic (so, plastic), and they can handle hand-washing in luke-warm temperatures. And since it's fiber optic, all that's creating that glow is an LED module at one end, which can just be disconnected for washing. Because of that, you can also swap colors at will.

I wonder if this is based on a very primitive version of the technology that the military has been working on to make predator type camoflauge clothing. It makes the wearer "disappear" by projecting an image behind to the front and vice versa.
