Flynn's black coat

on Tuesday, March, 15, 2011 10:48 PM
I have read on a website all about people making the costumes from the film, and many, like myself, love Flynn's black coat. anyone know of a good pattern from say Butterick or any of the other companies, that woud convert to an easy Flynn coat? I don't know that I would use lighting effects like other fans, was thinking of just using white satin to line the internal edges. But I do need a pattern. Although there was much talk, no one had any idea of where to get patterns. I can't sew worth heck, but I made my own Jedi robe once, took me a long time, hand sewn, a true labour of love.

Ideas?

TBH, it makes me think of a raincoat! It seemed like a relatively plain black coat, wasn't it? I'm thinking you could probably buy one without having to sew...I dunno. Hang on until the screenshots from User897 are to that point and then it'll be better to tell.

What do you want? I'm busy.

Program, please!

Oh I had thought about the screenshot thing too. And someone posted pics from the game I guess it was. Oddly my bathrobe is very similar, which would only need to cut into panels, but I have no idea how to make a pattern from a current piece of clothing without tearing up the original piece. I kinda wanted to use microfiber, but not sure how hard it is to sew. It's just I'm going to a Con in May and would love either this or just make a Tron tshirt of my own, showing my love of the franchise.

Hi Lisa,

I know it's not really a screen shot or a pattern, but it's a full body shot of Flynn's black robe. So maybe it will help in the meantime while you search for a pattern or wait for screen shots from the movie:

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/rorschachsrants/news/?a=22741

Good luck on your costume and be sure to post pics when you're finished!

Also, you might want to check out the TRON Legacy Costume Planning thread under the Replica Costumes section over at http://www.therpf.com. There's a ton of information, most of it about Sam or Quorra costumes, but i think there are other threads about Flynn's robe. So it might be worth checking out.

No problem! Anytime!

I've actually thought about making this costume for Halloween as it seems to be one of the simpler (and therefore probably less difficult to make) costumes. For someone like myself who has never made a costume, this one might be one of the easier ones to tackle. If I do undertake it, I am going to try and integrate EL tape into it, to mimic the on-screen version. We'll see, I'm still doing my research right now.

what exactly is EL tape and where would you buy it?

EL tape is ElectroLuminescent tape. There is also something called EL wire, which is probably more popular. If you do a Google search, it will turn up literally hundreds of links. You can also get EL sheets which are larger sheets (letter-sized, etc.) of EL material.

Basically it is a wire or tape that has a special phosphor coating that glows when electrical current is applied to it. It's usually made up of three basic components: The EL tape or wire itself, an inverter (which provides the correct current, voltage, and frequency to light up the EL component), and a power supply (usually household batteries like AA or 9-volt).

Most EL tape is available and purchased online. One of the more expensive (but very high quality) tapes is LightTape, available at http://www.lighttape.com. It's really nice stuff, but you're gonna pay through the nose for it. This is the actual EL tape used in the actors' costumes during the filming of TRON: Legacy.

A more affordable alternative is offered from Glow Hut at http://www.glowhut.com. There is a girl named Syuzi that made a fantastic Quorra costume using the EL tape from Glow Hut. Check it out here: http://www.fashioningtech.com/profiles/blogs/tron-quorra-costume

Another place that sells EL products is Luminous Film at http://www.luminousfilm.com/. Several of the members over at RPF that are creating their own costumes have ordered EL tape from them and they seem pretty satisfied with it.

I hope that gives you a basic starting point in learning about the different EL products out there. It's pretty fascinating stuff, and really does give off that "TRON-like" glow.

Good luck in making your costume! I look forward to hearing about your progress and seeing pics of the finished product!

LightTape is fantastic because it's super bright and the best EL Tape on the civilian market.
GlowHut is good on pricing, but make sure you order everything you need at once. Many people have said that in making multiple orders, there is a big chance you will get slightly different shades of the color.

And the website I have been on for a few months now is called TheRPF.com
There's several threads on different Tron: Legacy costumes.

Hooray for spammers. We need a "report post" button around here.

Good thread to bring back up, though, even though Halloween is over. ID, did you ever figure it out and make one of these?

I still think a raincoat or trenchcoat is your best bet. (I kind of have the urge to watch the thrift stores now and see if I can find an appropriate coat that would fit me and try doing it. There's no way I'd ever have the skill required to do anything fancy with EL tape/sheets, but this would be relatively simple.)

The most difficult part is that it looks like you'd need to line the hood and inside front edge (or maybe the whole thing) in white (and judging from the pics, white satin, no less, as the fabric seems to have a bit of shine):
http://www.homeofthenutty.com/movies/screencaps/displayimage.php?album=140&pid=152242#top_display_media

http://www.homeofthenutty.com/movies/screencaps/displayimage.php?album=140&pid=152243#top_display_media

It appears to have a split at the back, as well as on the sides, and it looks like all seam edges/hems-- edge of hood, bottoms of sleeves, down each side of the front, and the splits at back and sides-- are lined with EL tape (or probably cut-down EL sheets; it seems wider than EL tape I've seen, at least 2-3 inches). (The effect may be to appear that the lining of the whole thing lights up-- not sure.)

(I always thought it would be kinda cool to merge the styles of Flynn's coat and the Neo coat from The Matrix...)

I've wanted to make these robes for myself someday, as the flashback version/younger Flynn costume, but it's way out of budget currently. However, right now am working on making the white Flynn robes for a buddy of mine, so been studying the screen costumes for a while trying to come up with a pattern.

Kat, I think you've pretty much got the right ideas here....the lining of the coat does seem to be white satin, maybe even an iridescent variety, and the front-edge facings, hood, sleeves and hem being lined with approx a 3" wide strip of EL sheeting.
And you're right again on the stylings/patterns...both the white robes and the black robes seem to be based on the styling of Jedi robes/tunics and the outer robe on the Neo coat. The closest pattern I've found as a base pattern for Jedi robes/tunics seems to be Simplicity Costumes pattern # 5840....the Neo coat pattern is Simplicity Costumes pattern # 5386. I think with those two patterns as the base, a pattern for both the inner robes and the outer robe can be created. While the Neo coat pattern doesn't have a hood, the Jedi cloaks #5840 does and just needs to be modded, as Flynn's hood is slightly-squared at the back of the head instead of coming to a point.

I think the toughest part of doing the outer robe will be the EL sheeting along the edges, plus how to power that much surface EL (i.e. batteries and inverters) without bulking up the fit of the robes.
If only there was an affordable and screen-accurate alternative to EL sheets there ...such as stitching in strands of white LED Christmas lights along the edges, maybe enclosed into a 3" wide fabric casing that's internally edge-lit and/or functions as sort of a semi-transparent diffuser, much like a lightsaber blade does, eliminating the glow from the individual LED bulbs and making it instead one smooth channel of light? Then again how in the world to accomplish that without the casings being bulky, I dunno.

You think? Of course we do!!!!!
But then people could abuse it. Thats why by sending the Mods a PM, it cuts down on the continuous clicks it would get. At least I think that's why we dont have one.

I think they're actually styled on Buddhist meditation clothing, as Flynn's meditation style seems to be Zen and he seems to have embraced the whole Buddhist thing (he also wears a mala on his wrist). (Which, yes, the Jedi costumes may also be based on).

Oddly, my bathrobe is cut very much like Flynn's black coat. Even has a hood. All I'd have to do is copy the outer design, make the cuts for the side and back splits, and strengthen the hood some way.

Had this one awhile so I don't recall where I got it. The hood is nice to pull up when it gets chilly in here. The fabric is light, yet keeps me warm. But I was noticing one night while looking at Nutty's screenshots, how similar in cut they are.

Depends on what the style is I guess. Jedi had robes, cloaks don't have arms, do they? That was why I called Flynn's coat, a coat. And I love it! The way it swirls when he moves. Must be the side and back splits. I prefer the hood hidden away, not sure how they even did that.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online
