To reduce Internet traffic and speed up Web page display times, Web browsers keep a copy of Web pages and image files on the computer's hard drive.

Thus when you view the same page multiple times, the page is (idealy) only downloaded once and read from the hard drive in the subsequent times.

In our case, if we view Korstarter, et al, threads, the images maybe gone from the site by may still be on our hard drives. Thus, one needs to clear the cache.

Clearing it is simple, just type 'clear cache' followed by your brower name in Google and you should find the instructions easily enough. Each browser handles caches differently thus it is best to check with Google.

I suggest everyone clear their cache after loading those images in the thread. You don't want to take your computer into 'geek squad' after this... just sayin.

Hey guys, I just wanted to give you some additional info about what's been going on.

The person who keeps spamming the site with filth is someone who's friends with a former member that was banned from Tron-Sector. This member was the first person we've ever needed to ban in the history of the site. He was annoying, rude, insulted other members, and posted lots of non-sensical messages.

As "revenge" for being banned, he and/or his friend keep coming back under different names and posting shock images. It's just a more extreme version of what this member had already been doing, and proved that banning him in the first place was the right thing to do.

It's tough to ban someone based solely on their IP, and stronger security measures will be required. This site is custom programmed by Auric, so he will have to make any changes necessary. And he has already begun doing so. I made at least one suggestion, and it seems Auric has just implemented it. So everyone say thanks to Auric for taking the time to work on this stuff!

Regarding adding additional admins, and so on. No matter how many admins there are, we can't monitor the site 24 hours a day. Stuff will always slip through. But I've personally banned this pest and cleaned up his mess many times over. In the last couple of weeks alone, I've banned him and removed all his posts twice. There have been attacks where I nipped it in the bud and you never even saw it, because I caught him early enough. So understand that as admins WE ARE keeping any eye out and doing something about this nuisance. You just don't notice when we catch him and do our jobs. But again, we can't be here 24/7 to monitor the site.

If Auric makes the change that new accounts have to be authorized, then that should solve the problem altogether. Hopefully, he'll get that working soon.

That's interesting that you say that there has been ONE person banned in the history of the site. I wonder why I can't log in with my other username that I had been using since first signing up. Strangely, this "unable to sign in" incident happened after I was critical of the way things were going around here one night when threads were being combined. I wasn't vulgar, I wasn't personally insulting... just critical. And suddenly was unable to log back in the next day. Strange. Oh well, I'll probably lose this name now for being honest. Strange "fan" forum, this one.

So, basically you're ban jumping, admitting it randomly in a thread, and then criticizing the fansite because you were supposedly banned even though the situation you described could have just been, and likely is just an error? Sounds to me that we're not the problem here.

I know you're a kid, so I'll go light on you, but... you do know that it isn't necessary to comment on EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY THING THAT ANYONE SAYS IN EVERY THREAD ON THIS SITE! Seriously, man. It's not necessary. It was irritating when Billy used to do it. Just as irritating now. I knew things were going to change around here once Legacy came out. Didn't know it would get this bad, though.

Hang on, though. For one, we don't know that this person was banned. There may have been a site glitch causing them to sign up again. If they were banned, then shame that someone did not let them know via email. I've been to sites before that do not notify a person that they are banned or why, simply their access is denied with a note that says "you were banned," and I had to ask other members why I was banned because I couldn't remember having said anything offensive or even used any "swear" words (in one instance, it was because I commented on a thread where someone else mentioned, in passing, LGBT issues in the Boy Scouts. Everyone who commented on their comment--including me; I believe I questioned whether the Girl Scouts held the same policies--was banned for "trying to start issues" on the board. In another, two members got into an argument on a thread I started, so I was banned because in my OP I'd said I was complaining about something rather than asking for advice, and "rants" are not allowed, so it was deemed that it was my fault that the argument started. I wish I could tell you I'm making that stuff up as reasons and that I actually did something worse, but other members showed me the two threads where the mods specifically said that was why people got banned. It was a very, uh, uptight board about a lot of things, obviously, and there was a lot of complaining there over any comment that implied the world wasn't all sunshine and roses). Long story short, I'm strongly in favor of, when a member receives an email that they are banned from a site, that they are told why. And then confusion like we're seeing here is eliminated. It could be that this person is, in fact a bona-fide troll (time will tell), or it could be that they haven't a clue what they did wrong or even if they DID do something wrong. If they are, we'll find out soon enough. If they're not, put away your pitchfork.

LWSrocks Wrote:Just did exactly that. You know, here's something interesting- If this d*****bag ends up being pressed charges against, one of the things that could be said to authorities is that the pictures could have put some families in danger. My father is in the army, and if something accidental were to happen and authorities had to look at our computer memory to look for evidence of something and they discovered these pictures in the cache, it could cost my father his job.
Okay, I'm not sure what exactly this person posted; I saw one post that I scrolled past and I got the impression of porn with a lot of blood-play, but maybe there was more there that I did not see. As far as I know, the only thing that is illegal in porn is kiddie porn, or if it included bona-fide rape or some other illegal act. But as far as I know, anything else, even if it's some pretty weird shit, is not illegal.

At any rate, if any background investigators are looking at my, or your, or your dad's, computer, then it's because we have way bigger legal problems than some message-board troll's picture stored in our cache. Unless something about a military background investigation involves having to submit your personal technological devices for inspection, but I doubt they go that far.

It's attacks like this combined with interface/search problems that keep me from feeling comfortable recommending this site to other Tron fans in my life.

LWS,
How the heck was he able to do that ? That alone is pretty low to put people's personal info out there on front street. He must have hacked into the info somehow.

As far as those sick pics, I think you may be on to something LWS - the content in those pics could possibly get people into hot water, especially from the families of anyone in those sick pics. It also makes the sector look really bad.

Dumping your cache isn't good enough if some government organization wants to go poking - dumped cache can be recovered if you know what you're doing. You need a program like file shredder that saves garbage data onto the 'empty' parts of your HD. It's the only way to really erase information, aside from reformatting.

'course, if there was anything actually illegal in those images, couldn't we get him ruined for posting them in the first place?

We probably could, but then again, since he posted those sick pics on this site, then the sector could be liable, too.

They're doing what they can, I'm sure. I couldn't imagine being a mod of a site - it's probably a huge thing.

Again, as I said in that thread...it all looked to me like stuff easily found through a Google search of Auric's name. You ever used one of those "people search" sites like Spokeo or whatever? It is very scary. You can find your name, address, age, who lives with you and all their info, and if you pay money, I saw one site that would even give a person's physical description and such. Your privacy is nil on the 'net, guys.

And last time I checked, "traumatizing children" with random pictures on websites was not illegal. Any parent concerned about what their kids are viewing online should probably be keeping tabs on their kids' viewing.

Unless, as I said, these pictures actually contained some sort of illegal activity, it might be highly distasteful to post them but doesn't break any laws I know of, though heaven knows I'm not a legal expert. Nor is Big Brother going to come busting down your door to haul you off to the slammer because you accidentally saw some pictures on a totally-innocent website. Even if the pics WERE illegal, they were removed by Admins as soon as possible, I assume nobody emailed this guy wanting more, it's documented on the site over and over again that this person was a spammer. And to be honest with you, even if Johnny Law did come knocking thinking you did something wrong and for some reason you couldn't use the billion pieces of proof to convince him you were innocent... you're small potatoes and they don't especially want to waste resources on you when there are bigger fish to fry. Flip and give him your supplier and they'll go easy on you.

IOW, folks...let's not go getting all paranoid about this, mmkay? It was one guy (we think only one) who posted some shit none of us wanted to see, the mods took care of it as fast as they could and are trying to beef up security, and we'll all survive, I promise. No need to go making tinfoil hats and laying in supplies of water and canned food.

I have been missing in action for the last couple weeks here on Tron-sector because I rediscovered Pokemon and Heartgold has consumed my life...I haven't seen any of this, can someone direct me to this problem? I'd like to see it first hand.

I've already done modding before on one other site myself over here through phpbb. It is a huge task to do. I know. I'm setting up a private board myself over here on a computer over here that is already set up with phpbb and a few other things. I have had a chance to make any more modifications to it. Not that much time over here to work on it.

Actually that can and does happen. There have been numerous times where people have been arrested and convicted for files found on their computer that they didn't even know were there. Usually its files that wound up there via one of those stupid little pop-up porn ads that some websites spam you with. Occasionally those pop-ups contain images of underage kids, and when illegal images are found on someone's PC, it doesn't matter how they got there, the law assumes you knowingly downloaded it, and will do their best to ruin your life based on that assumption.
