Most people don't realize that George Lucas didn't get rich off of the Star Wars movies.

George Lucas got rich off of the Star Wars intellectual property, which includes all of the merchandising, the novels, the TV shows, and everything else ancillary to the motion pictures. Thus even when the prequels sucked and didn't garner audience favor the way the originals did, Lucas still made -- makes -- a wad of money.

It was the same with Lord of the Rings. Big box office, but the merchandising brought in billions of dollars on those movies. Billions. So that in a certain sense, the movie was just a huge advertisement to attract people to all the other stuff they could buy.

If TRON's new line of merchandise is doing even half-way decent, I am quite sure Disney is already rubbing its hands over the threequel. Now that they've brought the franchise back and established a new audience, they can try to capitalize. You're worried about a movie have a budget of only 100 Million dollars? There's a heck of a lot of stuff they can do for that amount of money and I would not be worried to hear about that kind of budget. In some ways I would be very pleased because having a huge lavish budget tends to make filmmakers (even the best ones) lose focus sometimes.

$100m could, actually at this point, create a film that looks every bit as good as Legacy did. It's pretty well known that a large part of Legacy's $170m budget was spent developing technology to help make the film. Now that it's developed, that money doesn't need to be spent twice. Also, the 3D models of the light cycles, Recognizers, the Grid, everything....have already been modeled and textured. Same with the costumes. That saves tons of money. (It's the same logic as to why it was possible to make low-budget sequels to Starship Troopers...they used the same 3d models and just re-animated them. I'm not saying that TRON will go low budget or DTV, I'm just making a comparison)

So, with all that in mind, $100m could actually be enough to make an excellent Tron 3. not to mention that the way it's set up, it seems as if the story of Tron 3 would need more time spent in the Real World before going back to the Grid.
