It was for IMAX. Why they need to do it for watching on TV is beynd me. That's gonna totally distract me while watching.

Because the scenes shot for Imax were shot in 1.85 full frame aspect ratio and the rest of the film was shot in 2.35 scope. The Blu-ray/DVD is indeed letterboxed and the Imax scenes are full frame. If they cropped the Imax scenes to fit 2.35 you'd lose about 40% of the image.

It is fantastic in full 1080p, and the IMAX scenes make it that much better. Once I started watching, I welcomed the IMAX scenes because it maxes out the viewing experience. Trust me when I say that it is not a distraction and is a very welcome addition. The Dark Knight is another great example of this.
