Considering one of the "catfighters" isn't even a "chick," as you say, think what you will. I am still waiting for "catfights" to materialize between the actual women of this thread.

Though, I'm not gunna lie, I'm really amused that I haven't been able to come in for ages and I still have "dibs" on Alan. If I've ever said anything on this thread akin to "he's mine" I just want to be clear that it is all in fun. Even if I joke about it, I don't hold any issue with someone else who likes/is attracted to, the characters I am. In fact, hurrah for us having that in common. Upon glancing back at this thread, I think the joking was misunderstood and perhaps there were moments were people took something more seriously than was ever intended. Sarcasm gets lost on the internet, so does playful joking around. When it's all type, people can only guess the intent of the poster.
When I started this thread it was for the female Tron fans to bond and know that there are other ones out here. I think everyone knows that we are more than "oh he's cute" or "I get to keep that one." I understand and respect why Tron has drawn so many guys to the fanbase. That is awesome. I'm tired of fandoms that are so full of girls that guys feel completely excluded from the online communities, etc. I hope that none of the guys that come in this thread feel excluded because that was never the intent. But if we do start making high-pitched noises about how adorable RAM is we know that the other chickies in the thread get that.
Obviously I can only speak for myself and my intent. I just wanted to be clear with everyone in here that, for my part, I don't have any issues with anyone, there is no character jealousy happening with me and I would love to see people moving forward in a way where everyone gets along. I say, to everyone, come in and be welcome! Perhaps it's time to change the scheme and alter the mood...

I wondered where you went. See, I KNEW somebody was into Alan.
Y'know, if somebody misunderstood something and got offended...shit happens. Heaven knows I have tried to fix anyone who has--and yes, you can go back through and read it, like my most recent post to Aerial_Zero, for one. I had thought it was pretty clear, for example, that Spark wasn't actually threatening to kick the ass of anyone who said they were into Rinzler, any more than any of the MALES of this forum were serious about various threats posted in many threads all over the boards, but I suppose if someone wants to read it that way, they can twist anything they want.
One can also read back and find MULTIPLE places where I have tried to add more to this discussion than just "OMG TRON/FLYNN/ALAN." So anyone who wants to accuse me of otherwise is welcome to think what they want, but the facts speak for themselves. None of my past posts have been edited, except at the time I posted them to fix typos, and if you don't believe me, feel free to contact a mod and see if there are any system logs. So go right ahead and accuse if it makes you feel better.

You can have the program that Sam writes...ummm...well...he's clearly a decent hacker and presumably has written programs at some point. So you can have whatever programs he writes

'Tis a joyous day! If only everything was as easy as copying programing Thank you fellow ladies for letting me get in on the goodness Just lemme know if I step on any pixelated toes
Speaking again of the Ram look-a-like: I wonder if Disney did that on purpose finding someone that looked like him to juggle discs (seeing as Ram did that in Tron). Usually Disney can/will find almost clones to walk around (I almost thought I'd have to pry my mom away from the Jack Sparrow look-a-like at Disneyworld last year o_O LoL)
Too bad they don't have look-a-likes for every Tron/Tron:Legacy main character to walk around, perform, or do something. Heck, they can just stand around and look hot and let me take a pic with them ((This, however would be a bad thing for my hubby 'cuz I'd practically have to be ejected from the park if I saw said clones LoL)) End of Line.

*activates the BCPXM, types in sequence* Okay, Tron, Rinzler, Ram, and Castor, I can do. Alan and Sam, on the other hand, are a little harder. Since neither of them are programs, copies cannot be made. You will have to ask elleldee(Sam) and scifichicx(Alan) to share. *copies of 1982 Tron, 2010 Tron, purring Rinzler, Ram and Castor(complete w/ laser cane) appear, one after the other, out of the BCPXM* Here you go, all components should be functional. |
Don't forget also--3-dimensional.
Okay, so guys. New Serious Topic. Inspired by a livejournal post in which the poster shared the link to Girls on Film: http://thegirlsonfilm.com/episodes which is a site where two women re-create male-only scenes from movies.
Naturally, being an uber-geek (luckily she's a geek too so she would've understood, even if she wasn't a geek of the Tron stripe), I had to talk about gender roles in movies and bring up Tron. Namely, Quorra.
I know we had discussed in another thread here some time ago whether Q was a strong female character or not.
This was my post, which I'll expand on after:
One thing I will say for Angelina Jolie, though I'm not really that into her: she almost always plays chicks that kick ass. Thank heaven someone does. And she doesn't need to wear skin-tight, low-cut outfits with high heels to do it in...most refreshing.
Was in an online discussion once about Olivia Wilde's character in the Tron: Legacy movie (o hai, I are geek) and whether she's a strong female character or not, would she have been written stronger if she'd been a male character, etc. (And also a brief mention of why Kevin Flynn didn't have a daughter instead of a son, though I pointed out it may have changed the dynamic between the two characters if the audience had been expecting some "daddy's little girl" relationship, gag.
Plus then Quorra's character probably would've had to be male, which would bring up another whole slew of issues, like all the gay jokes, but also feminist issues since 1. Quorra does fight for/rescue Sam in a few different scenes and it would be too stereotypical if Quorra was Quentin and Sam was Samantha, and 2. The "Sam and Quorra seem to hook up" aspect, while already sorta cheesy, would be even worse: girl goes into computer, finds love, ew.
So, anyway.
On the Flynn/Flynn dynamic: I really had to address some of my own biases in thinking about this. I was about to dismiss it with "but a girl probably wouldn't be as close to her dad as a boy would be." I realized that was wrong thinking...in part bias because my mom and I ARE close, and my dad and I, not so much (my parents were divorced when I was young, but even if I'd lived with my dad all my life I don't think we'd be as close as my mom and I are). But of course, it IS possible for a daughter and father to be close buddies, especially if the daughter has been raised without a mother. And when it comes down to a kid who hasn't seen his/her father in 20 years, then you can't expect a tight relationship anyway, right?
I had to hit up against my biases too when I tried to tell myself "well it's easier to believe a guy would have an attitude problem than a girl." Again, not so much. In fact I could argue strongly in favor of girl-with-attitude-problem BECAUSE she would be raised without a mother's influence (or is that another bias?)
One thing I'll say for those two things--any biases I have would be shared by much of the audience, so there might be viewer complaints there.
Do you think that if Sam had been a female character, that Quorra would've had to be a male character? Is there any reason they really NEEDED the dynamic of Sam/Quorra hooking up? Or could they drop that, and Samantha/Quorra could just be friends (we know Disney is never going to feature any sort of non-hetero relationship, though I would've loved if Flynn had said "So, wife...girlfriend...?" and Sam had answered, "Bob. We've been together for about five years now and he's a really great guy, you'd love him..." lol)? Do they need the romantic aspect to tie them together as they'll need to be in the real world, or could mere friendship do that? (I could argue that a platonic friendship would be less sticky, since it may be less prone to conflict.)
It IS a real issue that if Quorra WERE Quentin, there would definitely be a lot of snarky discussion about Flynn living with a man instead of a woman, I think. So I can definitely understand why they would not want to do that--it's not an issue that could be brushed off; it could derail some of the fandom if much of the discussion about the movie was about that rather than, y'know, the movie. So I'll give them that.
On the feminist issues: Okay, we can say it makes sense that a user going into the Grid could be in need of rescue from someone who has lived there all their life, regardless of the gender/sex of either one. It's just that reversing the roles would mean it's just another "the girl has to get rescued by the guy AGAIN" movie, and hasn't that...already been done? With Q doing the rescuing, it makes it easier just to see it as friend helping friend/initiate helping the neophyte. Sad that bias does that, but there you go. As far as them hooking up....yeah. Self-explanatory.
So, discuss. Is Quorra a character whose sex could be switched and have it still largely make sense as written? Or was she written in a way that if she were male, she'd been seen as a sissy? I think one of the debates in the other thread was, if Tron's arm had been derezzed, would he have gone unconscious and had to be carried around, or would he keep fighting?
I think this is the page of the thread:

I read an article about sexes as characters, and how some iconic parts would definitely change a film if played by the other sex. Wish we could test that without changing stuff, but look at Battlestar Galactica, with Starbuck and Boomer made female. Same actress who played Boomer also plays Kono on Hawaii 5-0, a male part in the old show. Not much difference for me, except I liked the male Starbuck better. *wink*order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

I would lose my shit if I saw a TRON walking around. Holy crap. I just said that the last time I was at ElecTRONica too. I mean, the original-designed programs they have are really awesome and having a Zeus-type and sirens is fabtastic- but- Troooooooooooooooon.
There was a guy in an original Tron costume at a convention here in LA recently that I saw a picture of and I basically freaked out. I would have had a fangirl explosion at him if I'd actually run into him. (even if he was like 17, stfu). So a fit, Boxlietner look-alike in his late twenties rocking that T-circuit would just about kill me.

I think they made the right choice with Quorra being a female character and Sam being male. Sam does need saving- not because of gender but because he is the lost, abandoned child. Quorra is the savior and helper, not because of her gender, but because she has been studying under the supervision of the user for so many cycles. Choosing Quorra as a female and Sam as a male helps the audience see them as the people they would be in response to the situations they have lived through. If Sam was "Samantha" and stumbled out the battle grid thanks to "Quentin" in the same way, people would groan and say it's because it's a woman, etc.
In truth their strengths and weaknesses have everything to do with personality, and nothing to do with gender. I think the best way to show that it has nothing to do with gender is to go against the stereotypes. I think Quorra could be a dude and Sam could be a girl 100% as written and it would be the same story. The problem comes from the audiences' perception of the characters and automatically shrugging off any issue as a gendered thing instead of a trait that that character would obviously have after living through what Sam and Quorra have lived through.
People harp on the romance. What romance? They are bros, for sure, but I didn't see any I love yous. Yeah, Sam gives Quorra that sweet look when he's talking about the sun, but that is easily interpreted as something other than a pickup line. It is certainly hinted at for anyone who would like to see it, but honestly I think that ship sails by the end of the film because, well, she's now made up of Kevin!Particles. I wouldn't want to hook up with a girl that was materialized out of my dad.
Quorra is wonderful because she gets to be Kevin's gift to Sam. Kevin wasn't there to raise his son, but he did mentor Quorra. She can take those cycles of companionship and knowledge and pass them on to Sam. She is more like his sister in so many ways and that is Kevin giving Sam and Quorra a chance at the family both were robbed of in different ways. I like that Quorra is this new hope for Sam and it has nothing to do with gender or romance, but everything to do with family.
