The theaters take their cut, and how much that is varies by several factors, but the rule of thumb is that a film needs to make three times its budget to turn a profit. You generally figure 50% will goto the theaters, and while the actual number might end up being less, there's also marketing costs which aren't factored into the budget. I've seen those estimated at 120 mil worldwide for Legacy, which wouldn't surprise me at all when you consider everything they've done over the last few years. To break even the movie would have needed around 580 mil.

Now clearly that is very ambitious, and I doubt Disney expected a 28 year old sequel to a film that underperformed in the first place to do those kinds of numbers unless they happened to think they could duplicate what Avatar did, which would have been very naive of them. Overall I think Disney was planning for the future and trying to build a franchise, hence the animated series that was a work in progress before the film was even released, and filming new scenes for the Blu-Ray to get people excited for the possibility of Tron 3.

Legacy will probably break even after the home video release, and I highly doubt Disney will pass up the chance to turn this into a real moneymaker. After all the groundwork is now laid. Regardless of how much the film cost, taking in close to $400 mill shows a lot of potential. A lot of people saw the movie, and many more will come April. The general public will now be familiar with the franchise and more likely to go see Tron 3.

It also varies by country. In the US the studio might get as much as 100% the first week, but then that percentage drops and eventually ends up favoring the theaters, so it usually ends up evening out for the most part over the course of the run.
