The movie is doing great for a sequel to a movie that came out about 30 years ago. (And all of the merchandise that's flying off the shelves can't hurt either!) This week I think we'll pass the $300 million line and then, yeah, it's pure gravy from there.
My guess for final domestic is $180.
Final world wide total estimation: $350

It's worth remembering that box office returns numbers are gross amounts. A hefty percent of that money does not go to the studio, but stays with the individual theaters. Regardless, ticket sales only account for a fraction of the revenue a film is expected to bring in.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that TRON Legacy breaks $400,000,000 world-wide box office, before it finally departs theaters some time later this year. It's not even mid-January and TL is practically at $300,000,000 so I think two to four more months of revenue from all regions (plus additional domestic) will take it above $400,000,000 lifetime.
And them, of course, the DVD and Blu-Ray sales will begin!
GO TRON!

No offense, visionshock, but that blog doesn't exactly scream credibility.
There are no official quotes, it's not a blog linked to any sort of reputable industry source, and there are no specifics nor figures given. Just a lot of, "my sources tell me," hand-wavery that's supposed to substitute for actual data.
Like 98% of all blogging: it's just some guy's opinion.
Sounds like this guy didn't like the movie, and is angry at Disney because of it.
Ho hum.
Here is my opinion.
TRON LEGACY -- $400,000,000 dollars US world-wide box office before it leaves theaters. Book it.

Ha! That's hilarious.
"Garret Hedlund's hairdresser's aunt said Tron 3 isn't happening."
Oh, well that's that then.
BTW -
Weekend actuals are in, and Tron did better than estimates:
Estimate: $9,803,000
Actual: $10,090,002
Not enough to overtake Season of the Witch, though, unless it was WAY over-estimated. Actuals for SOTW aren't in yet.

My sincere hope is this and I could be totally wrong. While I imagine studio suits were hoping for a $300 million domestic take and $300 million international take, that they also figured that it wasn't necessarily realistic, being that it was a sequel for a 30 year old film that didn't have a huge fan base outside the San Diego Convention Center. A sequel to a movie that unless you already owned a copy of it you likely wouldn't be able to find one to watch before the movie came out. My hope is that the investment Disney made paid off and will continue to pay off in generating a bigger fan base so that the brand could gradually grow over time. I have to think there are way more fans of Tron now than there were a year ago. A fan base that would at least support merchandising, future video games, a TV series and hopefully eventually another film. I'm hoping Disney didn't put all their eggs in one basket, recognize that an old property has new life and it is growing. As both films hit the home video market more kids are going to see it and get hooked, I believe. I'm hoping studio execs don't pull the plug on the brand because it didn't met probably unreasonable expectations. I would think with careful cultivation of the franchise it could grow into something much bigger than it was and be completely worthwhile both artistically and financially. I think Tron:Legacy should be viewed as a success because I do think it has opened doors for Disney with kids and adults. I don't expect them to greenlight a sequel right now but I do think if future efforts aren't abandoned another feature film could be more successful than Tron Legacy was.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I think it's safe to say that the visibility of the TRON franchise leapt by several orders of magnitude, thanks to TRON Legacy. To paraphrase Walter from the original movie, "TRON isn't the franchise you keep in your garage anymore." It's now been firmly established as a major science-fantasy franchise in the film world.
I do not think Disney executives expected a TRANSFORMERS type windstorm, because the franchise as a whole did not have the pre-existing massive cultural and audience penetration that TRANSFORMERS (or its sequel) enjoyed. I think Disney executives mainly wanted to get a solid foothold in the same marketing demographics that TRANSFORMERS enjoys, using a house product that already had a substantial fanbase from the first film to 'anchor' the new project.
Now, I could be wrong on that. Maybe Disney was expecting TRON(FORMERS) and anything short of $300M domestic + $300M overseas will be seen as a failure. If that's the case, then I can only fault Disney execs for having a reach exceeding their grasp. But I somehow think this unlikely. Disney has smart people. They are, after all, the same ones who do the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies, the TOY STORY movies, and so forth. They know how to build and maintain franchises.
And it is just possible that TRON Legacy may reach $300M domestic, $300M overseas. I think $200M domestic, $250M oversease is more likely, but that's my gut hunch. If TRON has a very extended run through April or beyond, the domestic take could pile up quite high. Perhaps beyond even my expectations?
Our (guesstimated) benchmark for the "success" of TRON Legacy is $300M world-wide, based on production costs and nebulous marketing numbers. If TRON Legacy goes to $400M world-wide (as I expect it to) then Disney will have more than made back all of its investment, and there will be significant incentive to capitalize in the form of a sequel, as well as the planned television series.
One thing to also consider: Disney execs don't operate in a vacuum. As they examine TRON's performance from 2010 and through 2011, they will be comparing it against its peers. So far the holiday season of 2010 is far off the year before, when AVATAR swept the box office. Neither FOCKERS nor TRUE GRIT have fantastically outperformed TRON, and TRON did own its opening weekend, which is probably the only absolute hurdle TRON had to jump in order to establish itself as a baseline success. And it did just that.
If the overall audience dollars for 2010-2011 just aren't there, for any movie or movie franchise, Disney will take this into account. Just like all the other movie companies must. If anything, Disney will examine TR3N with an eye to reducing cost -- very probable anyway given the fact that much of the heavy lifting for a threequel is already done -- and maximizing story. The precarious bridge between the old film and the new film has been achieved, and now they can strike forward with a more thrifty production, building an expanded feature film and television co-universe.

Some food for thought. When pondering the final domestic and overseas revenue that TRON Legacy may ultimately bring in.
KING KONG
Domestic: $218,080,025 39.6%
+ Foreign: $332,437,332 60.4%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $550,517,357
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
Domestic: $250,863,268 43.7%
+ Foreign: $323,617,573 56.3%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $574,480,841
I AM LEGEND
Domestic: $256,393,010 43.8%
+ Foreign: $328,956,000 56.2%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $585,349,010
NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS
Domestic: $219,964,115 48.1%
+ Foreign: $237,400,485 51.9%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $457,364,600
TOY STORY 2
Domestic: $245,852,179 50.7%
+ Foreign: $239,163,000 49.3%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $485,015,179
2 0 1 2
Domestic: $166,112,167 21.6%
+ Foreign: $603,567,306 78.4% (WHOA!)
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $769,679,473
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM
Domestic: $227,471,070 51.4%
+ Foreign: $215,353,068 48.6%
----------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $442,824,138
NOTE: the Bourne movies are particularly interesting because they began with a modestly-budgeted, modestly-successful initial film, based on the Bourne character from the Robert Ludlum novels. All of them made money, and each sequel has made more money than the last -- which I think illustrates what can happen with a properly managed and planned franchise: you establish your market and audience, and then you capitalize over successive films. The base expands because the sequels broaden the visibility, and word of mouth gets around to movie-goers of all stripes.

Box Office Mojo is reporting the updated numbers now:
JANUARY 10, 2011
TRON LEGACY
Domestic: $148,212,420 50.9%
+ Foreign: $143,200,000 49.1%
------------------------------------------------
= Worldwide: $291,412,420
Considering that TL has only been in theaters for four weeks -- not even a full month yet -- these are great numbers. Overseas will almost certainly lap domestic by this time next week, and if trends (for this type of movie) hold, the overseas will make up the bulk of sales by the end of January.
I don't know why people keep trafficking the rumor that TRON Legacy is a financial disappointment. That's just silly.

Nor does visionshock in general. The only "contribution" the poster has made has been doomsaying and spreading dubious declarations of failure. I'd not only be ready to suspect trolling, but I wouldn't be surprised if it tuens out to be that 8-yr old critic's daughter who's infamous for bashing the film.
