It is interesting if you think about it.

With Tron Legacy they bring back Bridges, Bruce, Lisberger, and a lot of references from the first Tron film, light cycles, recognizers, solar sailor.. etc. That is all for us old school die hard Tron fans.

But the film is no where to be found. It is like Disney knows us die harders out there already have it the DVD and at the same token they are refusing it for the new audience that 'remembers' it.

Can anyone remember a time that is similar to this? A new film that comes out and the previous DVD releases aren't available?

Well I'm glad my 20th Anniversary "Collector's Edition" Tron DVD is holding up to its name finally. If it was in print indefinitely, I'd feel a little swindled by misleading advertising. Plus, doesn't Disney usually have 7 or 9 year cycles with their home video movie releases, and make stuff go out-of-print on purpose? Sounds like the Tron DVD not being unavailable is not that unexpected for Disney's track record.

Actually, the "Disney Vault" thing has been done away with. It was one of Eisner's ideas to make more money. Since he's gone, they've stopped doing that. Though many of their movies still remain unreleased, I've heard that won't last long. Movies still go out of print, but newer editions will take their place eventually.

I'm not so much okay with what they're doing so much as I understand why. They have a plan that they think will boost interest in TL, and it involves holding the BR release of the original back. Either they aren't confident in it helping sales, or they fear it'll decrease interest. I'm not happy that they're doing this, but I can understand why.

As for Song of the South, the reason they've kept that out of print is pretty obvious. I doubt it'll ever get a re-release. At least not anytime soon.

You're totally correct some of us would object to your suggestion.
That's like taking a film like Metropolis and try re-doing the film
in color and with recent special effects. TRON and The Last Starfighter
don't need any work done but a remaster.

Uh oh, some guy on IMDB is proclaiming that Last Starfighter is "the father of all cgi films" because "it is certainly the first full feature film with a lot of cgi". IIRC didn't they also use a Cray to render the full CGI scenes for Tron?

Anyway, it looks like someone wrote a LS game that plays just like the arcade game in the movie. Maybe if you score really high Centauri will come and take you away too.
