Thoughts on not releasing the original TRON on Blu-Ray (or screening it anywhere in the US) before TRON Legacy?

I've noticed this LA Time story (or version of it) being picked up in newspapers & websites across the US today:

I've had more people asking me how to find Tron on blu-ray/dvd and the fact that there's NOTHING available for them at this point.

Disney wants to gauge the reaction to TL so they can better gauge the number of Tron blue rays to produce. The movie is 28 years old and most likely won't be in that great of demand if TL bombs. Seriously can you see their target probable demographic of 18-24 year old males putting Tron on their christmas list? They are purposely not releasing it yet, they do not want to kill the marketing efforts for the new film. I personally believe Disney wants to forget about the first film and basically start over. I can feel it in all of the Lisberger interviews.

True, true, true. I agree with you without end: alot of horror films today lack the concept of building suspense and compared to the old-school horror flicks, they just don't cut it. I remember checking out the recent Michael Bay-produced remake of, "The Amityville Horror". Now while the opening montage was pretty cool, I was pretty disappointed with the rest of the film - jump scares every other minute and not much build-up of suspense. I also hated the remake of "The Fog" and I dig John Carpenter as well.

Back ot: in regards to Tron not coming out on Blu-Ray before TL: I kinda understand why Disney is doing this, but at the same time, my mindset is this: release the original Tron as well, so that people can see the history. Yes, TL will have flashbacks, but there are some things that TL's flashbacks won't be able to fill in. I hate how alot of people today have this disdain for anything that came before the present time - it's a mindset that almost thinks that the child came first, and then gave birth to its mother. It makes sense, actually. If they hold the Tron BRD release until that of the sequel, they can market them together...probably offer a 2-for-1 box set pack.

Plus, if it means just that much more TLC is given to the restoration/enhancement, then so much the better. I was going to make a backup copy of my Anniversary copy, but it was quicker to pay the $5 for a used copy at the time.

I added new sealed copies to my TRON collection for $9.99....

Prices will plummet when the Blu-ray comes out.

I believe you are right. Liseberger's only involvement in any future Tron movies will be in the credits: "Based on a story by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird".

IMO, IF there are sequels, Flynn and Alan will be phased out, the plot will center around Sam to target a younger action oriented audience and the stories will become more soap operaish. Can you say Twilight on the game grid?
