i was watching Big Trouble In Little China last night and when Egg Shen and Lo Pan battle at the end they use sorcery to create two warriors that fight.
 this reminded me of an old classic cabinet arcade game where you control a knight to fight another. IIRC, the rendering of the characters was in "lines" like Battlezone/Tempest and not filled-in polygons.
does anyone remember the name of that game?

Haha, I love that movie, especially that scene. 
The game you're talking about almost sounds like Warrior, a fairly rare game from Vectorbeam...came out in 1979.
