A lot of people have been caught up recently with the 10th anniversary of the Dream Cast and seems that no one remembers the North American release of the Genesis back in 1989. So with that, I'll start here.
My first experience with the system was the year they released it. Our local video store had it available to rent almost immediately (someone who worked there must have been a video game fan of some sort).
Before that, I remember reading about the Genesis in a 'Game Pro' magazine and I was impressed. I already had a 16-bit computer (Amiga 500) at the time so I quickly drew interest to this system. So, I decided to rent it with a game to check it out.
OMG... First Genesis game I played is still one of my all time favorites EVER!!!! It was 'Revenge of Shinobi'. That game alone sold me on the system and I finally got a Genesis that Christmas (which I had to pay half for it).
The Genesis (Pre-Sonic era) was known to me the mature system between me and my friends. Nintendo had that cute-and-cuddly persona and for a kid my age, I wanted to move into something more serious. The Sega Genesis was the answer.
The games available at launch was well worth the cost. The packaged title was 'Altered Beast' (which was a favorite of mine at the arcades) 'Ghouls n Ghosts' and a few others, but the library quickly grew before the end of the year. Golden Axe was spectacular when it was finally released and added an extra level not seen in the arcades... but pretty much all the games were of a serious cool nature and far from cute-and-cuddly. (Arcade version of Strider from Capcom was so freaking awesome on that system).
I kept my Genesis up till the Sonic era came in. I played Sonic, liked it, then sold my system after beating it. I saw what direction Sega was going and I fully understood as to why... but it was time to move on and it was the last game system I ever owned.
I went strictly to PC gaming mainly because I was always a computer geek. I discovered console game emulation in the mid to late 90's and it's been great reliving these games all over again. I'm going to see if I can buy a generation-1 Genesis or Mega Drive with games from the pre-sonic era and just collect those. Something to have around and hook up to one of my old TVs.
Did I mention that the Sega Genesis controller was perhaps the most solid controller EVER???? That thing was built with the highest durability in mind.

Genesis...my dad found one of them some 8 years ago I believe, and it worked for the several games it came with. My my, it stopped working after a while so it was thrown away. Regrettable yes, but I was in no position of power to keep it. Fortunately I still kept the SNES, so I'm not too disappointed.
EDIT: An yea, I understood why you saw the maturity/coolness in those games...it seemed more hardcore compared to the NES/SNES when I think about it. I mean, it's true Nintendo released their fare share, but Nintendo had a majority of children oriented, and still somewhat do. It's a shame Sega is only software only now, Everybody loved their Dreamcasts, hehe.

What Nintendo did worked and worked very well. Still does, but I miss the persona of the early Genesis games. Sonic was a great move though. It put Sega in their most prosperous period. For me, I was already deep into the Amiga 500 at that time and got into PC gaming. So pretty much, computers was my open path.
Brings back a lot of great memories. It's funny how the warfare between Nintendo and Sega was such a big deal back then. Great systems and great competition.
Sorry to hear about the broken Genesis. I experienced something similar with an old Colecovision a few years back.

I still have the original Sega Genesis console. It's the one that first came packaged with "Altered Beast". I have about a dozen games for it still.
Nowadays I play certain Genesis games with an Emulator. Some games I still think still look great and are still fun as heck.

Me too. I've done the emu scene since about 96. A lot of great titles.
I loved the style of the first console. When they redid the design for Gen-2, I almost puked. It was so bland. Then the Gen-3 came out and it looked like a joke.
The original will always be my favorite.

I have all three Genesis models along with a Sega CD and 32X. I'm yet to hook the Sega CD up to the 32X for the Sega CD 32X games I've got, however. The other day, I had a friend come over. We played the Sega CD game "Surgical Strike". His initial reaction was "Hah, it's Micheal Bay: The Game".
"What you see here is the latest in stealth technology"
*unveils hovercraft with 4 miniguns and 2 rocket launchers*
Surgical Strike is awesome.
The model 3 is awesome for it's portability. The only issue is that you can't plug any of the add on systems into it and it came out right at the end of the Genesis' lifespan.
The reason most people are remembering the Dreamcast launch is primarily because of the following reasons:
1) Dreamcast was Sega's last console
2) 9/9/09 compared to 8/14/09, what sticks in your head better?
3) Dreamcast has a huge fanbase
4) Dreamcast was the first system to have voice recognition, built in modem, web browsing capabilities, online multiplayer, online multiplayer voice chat, and had a little bit more than twice the processing power of what was previously the most powerful game system, the Nintendo 64.
However, speaking in financial terms, the Genesis was Sega's last success in the console business, and it's pretty notable for that. Dreamcast would have been a huge success if it had DVD capabilities.

'Michale Bay - The Game'.... lol.. that cracked me up.. I'll have to remember that.
I agree with you on the Dreamcast front. I only briefly experienced the DC back in it's release and I was impressed. My brother bought one back in 2005 and he loves it (plus he has the first revision that was very hackable).
Sega's plan to expand the Genesis with a CD drive (and then later with the 32x) looked great on paper, but it was overkill for a single system. That wasn't the main reason as to why it failed though. The market wasn't ready for the console CD-ROM yet and they didn't get much 3rd party support. Only a few games (some of which were remakes or reboots of games) actually became favored.
The 32x seemed to be a great idea but people were already scarred by the Sega CD and I think nobody signed up as a 3rd party to support it. The library lacked badly and the games felt so rushed that the outcome was just sad.
It's a shame to because both concepts were good ideas on the chalk board. They had a good marketing strategy, but most of the games were cheezy (SEGA CD) and Sega capitalized on an already dated game genre from the PC too late, hence games like 'Night Trap'.
[[EDIT:] I might be wrong about that last statement because CD-ROM games like 'RIVEN' was doing well on the PC at the time but it was nothing like 'Night Trap']
lol... well... that's how I see it anyways. I'm no expert on how the game market works, but it's just my thoughts on the subject. I'm sure my view point has holes in it but I think the overview of this post may be agreeable.

I liked what few games I played on my friend's Sega CD.
Night Trap was cheezy fun-as-hell, I loved Sewer Shark (Shoot the tubes, Dogmeat!), and to this day I drive to the Jaguar XJ220 soundtrack! "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. That wasn't the only reason, the 32X was EXTREMELY unreliable. Many units were defective and ended up on clearance shelves for $20 only a few weeks after release.

Splatter House 2 is one of my all time favorites. So was Ghouls and Ghosts, Golden Axe, Altered Beast and a others.
I played 'Sword of Sodan' on the Genesis before the I played it on the Amiga. That game was freaking hard but it was cool cause you could decapitate soldiers and it was very detailed, but what a slow running game.
Good call...
