Another interesting detail is this...
We can see Flynn wearing this bracelet-like band made of some white stones/shells around his left wrist...

This does'nt surprise me because according to the chronology of ENCOM, Flynn's wife died after Sam was born. The amount of discovery he was going to reveal prior to his disappearance led me to think he was trying to pull a "Dr. Frankenstein" with his wife, or at least, attain immortality perhaps with the possibility he cannot return to the real world again due to medical reasons that he has terminal illness. Maybe?
Logically, you have to think about this. The faked letter is indeed in line with Flynn's thinking despite the Flynn Lives member being carted to a psychward because it is a cover up to persuade the public that it is a hoax when it really is'nt.
Oddly, if Kevin Flynn has access to his old school lightcycle and can roam where-ever he wants, Clu won't stop him but it appears to be a mutual understanding that he's not allowed to be near the programs nor influence the grid and if he did that, Clu would whup him. It's about the morality of whether a god should intervene or not although the tapestry of themes is woven together in a deeper layer.
Therefore, he is definitely trapped in the Grid with the gateways shut off and no way out via the laser, although he remained a guest and had to hide away from all the programs. Either Clu is hiding him away in the outlands by order or Flynn chose to do so himself.
And I think Quorra is much more than his companion. I mean, for 20 years without a wife would drive a man mad, indeed.
EDIT: And consider the psychological effect being de-rezzed into the Grid and back to the Real World numerous times it would have on Flynn's mind. He can't talk to anyone about his experiences. Greetings, VRAM:
I'm with you. I stated in a much earlier post several months ago, that there were TONS of symbolic cultural metaphors and allusions to mythologies, of many different cultures. I also think there's a ton of ancient GREEK and ROMAN and other elements as well (which may be slightly modified) i.e.,;
*Flynn's Safehouse - akin to Zeus looking down from Mt. Olympus
*Sirens - mythological creatures in Greek mythology
*The Lightcycle coliseum - akin to the Roman Collosseum
*Castor - a deity in Greek Mythology
Another thing to me, is how Flynn is dressed - the robe he's wearing, to me, looks like it could be derived from Indian mythology or religion, the whole discs as weapons I believe derives from an ancient Eastern culture, as well, and I recall the interview w/Lisberger on the 20th Anniversary Tron DVD and I remember seeing an African artifact sitting near him when he's sitting at that table talking to the camera.
Fighting for TRON, The USERS, Both Flynns, Independents, and the mighty ISOs since '82.

And I'm with you Renegade! I do remember reading some of the things you just posted... I believe you were the first one relating possible T:L story elements directly with Roman mythology and if you've read the TRON: Betrayal story you know it parallels the creation of the Grid with the foundation of Rome...
Now, I want to turn your attention on to something else I just realized would not have been or thought possible or even personally liked... however, if you haven't read the graphic novel yet, I don't want to spoil it for you... It has to do with some of CLU 2.0's dialog and their direct relation with "events" set by the Flynn Lives movement...
SPOILER... Mouse Over To Read:Seeing how it's now obvious that "the betrayal" refers to the one that'll be perpetrated by CLU 2.0 prior to the disappearance of Kevin Flynn (or by Kevin Flynn himself in CLU's point of view) and how he'll be unable to return to the real world for 27 years or so, the only viable and logical explanation for those mysterious "Flynn sightings" now part of the "official" TRON timeline/chronology is:

I don't know why but there has been a noticeable rise in confrontationalism building on this site before comicon 2010. Maybe some people have created belief systems in their head about a movie that hasn't even been released yet that when challenged results in hostility.

To me, 'Legacy' covered everything, except this: What caused 'Flynn's sightings'?
I know this may not make sense, but maybe, just maybe, there's an untold story of CLU managing having access to Flynn's identity disk and getting a 'glimpse' of the real world then managing returning the disk without Kevin noticing...
