Back when I upgraded my PC, I made a thread about how I didn't like Vista very much.
In the meantime, Service Pack 1 for Vista was released and fixed most of the problems. Vista became decent. But I never really warmed to it.
I even installed Service Pack 2, but it didn't really change things much either. Maybe some bugs were fixed and some new features added, but the performance was still the same.
Enter Windows 7. I installed the public Release Candidate yesterday. Wow, what a difference.
When people said 7 was a lot better than Vista, they weren't kidding. And we're still in the beta phase. The final version will go on sale in October. But even now, the RC kicks the crap out of Vista.
There are so many improvements, it's not even funny. Win 7 boots faster, shuts down faster, runs faster, pages to the hard disk far less (no more constant hard disk grinding after boot), works with just about every program I've thrown at it so far . . . I can't say enough positive things about it.
When I first heard about Win 7, I thought it was just going to have a few band-aid fixes to make Vista slightly more tolerable. But it's really much better than that.
Don't get me wrong. Win 7 is clearly Vista Second Edition. But the SE fixes just about everything that was wrong with Vista. If you can get 7 for cheap or for free, do yourself a favor and dump Vista for 7.

I know the last two versions of uuntu were great. Especially when your running the ultimate edition which has the codecs already on there. And you don't have to go a searching or download them afterwards in order to view the videos.

I like the new look. I did see a screen shot about a year ago that also was in a form close to KDE or Gnome. Kinda a Linux look for Windows 7 but I don't know if those were real or not.
I skipped Vista and now with all the talk of Win7, I'm really interested in this OS. One main feature I like is XP mode (VM/VW environments) so I can still play my games and use my XP exclusive apps. I just hope that the VM is reliable and not a gimmick.
My question is: Does Windows 7 have 'nag-ware'? By that I mean, are there pop-ups from Windows that freaks out when you actually use your computer like in Vista? I so hated that.

Unfortunately, XP mode won't work very well for games. The XP virtualization only emulates 2D graphics. No 3D support as far as I'm aware. Also, XP mode is only available in Win 7 Pro and Ultimate.

XP mode also needs a certain type of processor to work. This is a list of processors that will work with XP mode:

I've tried playing some games in Win 7 and they seem to run even better than they did in Vista. It's a subjective thing, but I'm certain that games are loading faster and there are fewer pauses. On Vista I'd get the occasional hiccup or pause (like once every few minutes) but on 7 I haven't noticed it at all.

Yes, but it's been significantly reduced by default in Win 7. Vista's UAC drove everybody up the wall, including me, with its constant nagging. In 7, there's a now a slider you can adjust to further reduce or even turn off the nags.
You could turn off the nagging in Vista as well, but there was no slider. UAC was either on or off. Either it nagged you constantly, or it wouldn't nag you at all. Win 7 lets you change it so that you only get nagged when it's something really important.

Thats good to hear. On Vista, it would nag you for turning it off but it was only on boot up that I seen it.. but left that stink'n red icon in the task bar...
Yeah, I was aware about the processor specs but didn't know about no 3D gfx emu. One thing good about it is that someone may make a 3Dfx and/or Nvidia/ATI emulation for those cards... but you did mention that games seem to run better in 7 so thats good news too.
Thanks for the input.. |
