The Official I love Windows 7 thread

on Friday, June, 05, 2009 10:18 AM

Back when I upgraded my PC, I made a thread about how I didn't like Vista very much.

In the meantime, Service Pack 1 for Vista was released and fixed most of the problems. Vista became decent. But I never really warmed to it.

I even installed Service Pack 2, but it didn't really change things much either. Maybe some bugs were fixed and some new features added, but the performance was still the same.

Enter Windows 7. I installed the public Release Candidate yesterday. Wow, what a difference.

When people said 7 was a lot better than Vista, they weren't kidding. And we're still in the beta phase. The final version will go on sale in October. But even now, the RC kicks the crap out of Vista.

There are so many improvements, it's not even funny. Win 7 boots faster, shuts down faster, runs faster, pages to the hard disk far less (no more constant hard disk grinding after boot), works with just about every program I've thrown at it so far . . . I can't say enough positive things about it.

When I first heard about Win 7, I thought it was just going to have a few band-aid fixes to make Vista slightly more tolerable. But it's really much better than that.

Don't get me wrong. Win 7 is clearly Vista Second Edition. But the SE fixes just about everything that was wrong with Vista. If you can get 7 for cheap or for free, do yourself a favor and dump Vista for 7.

I know the last two versions of uuntu were great. Especially when your running the ultimate edition which has the codecs already on there. And you don't have to go a searching or download them afterwards in order to view the videos.

This is what my desktop currently looks like. I'm still working on configuring and personalizing things the way I like.

Is there a way to make the toolbar at the bottom of the screen like it was in Vista?

Nope. At least, not yet.

There's no way to get the older style taskbar or XP style Start menu in Win 7. The new "superbar" (that's what Microsoft calls it) is the only option.

I'm sure someone will find a way to bring back the older taskbar, for those who want it. But I don't know why anyone would want to.

I'll admit I was skeptical of the new taskbar when I first saw it. But once you've used it, you probably won't want to go back to the old one.

And for those who have been considered Dino's in the computer field like myself would still want it. No offense TRONFAQ to each their own in certain circumstances in cases like this. I still like the taskbar under windows. And prefer the taskbar under GNOME GUI in Linux where it is on the top and bottom to seperate the menu's ontop and what is running in the taskbar on the bottom and in multiple desktops.

Well I know it's a small and rather strange reason for not doing it, but if someone can get the Vista toolbar at the bttom I'll probably download it

Both you and Compucore say you want to keep the old taskbar, because you like it better. But how do you know you'll like it better if you haven't tried the new taskbar?

Actually, it turns out it is possible to get the old taskbar style back. Sort of.

But an older XP style Start menu still isn't possible. Though you can come close by choosing the Windows Classic desktop theme. Myself, I pretty much prefer the new superbar now.

I like the new look. I did see a screen shot about a year ago that also was in a form close to KDE or Gnome. Kinda a Linux look for Windows 7 but I don't know if those were real or not.

I skipped Vista and now with all the talk of Win7, I'm really interested in this OS. One main feature I like is XP mode (VM/VW environments) so I can still play my games and use my XP exclusive apps. I just hope that the VM is reliable and not a gimmick.

My question is: Does Windows 7 have 'nag-ware'? By that I mean, are there pop-ups from Windows that freaks out when you actually use your computer like in Vista? I so hated that.

Unfortunately, XP mode won't work very well for games. The XP virtualization only emulates 2D graphics. No 3D support as far as I'm aware. Also, XP mode is only available in Win 7 Pro and Ultimate.

http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2009/04/25/xp-mode-and-gaming-not-so-much.aspx
XP mode also needs a certain type of processor to work. This is a list of processors that will work with XP mode:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization#AMD_virtualization_.28AMD-V.29
I've tried playing some games in Win 7 and they seem to run even better than they did in Vista. It's a subjective thing, but I'm certain that games are loading faster and there are fewer pauses. On Vista I'd get the occasional hiccup or pause (like once every few minutes) but on 7 I haven't noticed it at all.

My question is: Does Windows 7 have 'nag-ware'? By that I mean, are there pop-ups from Windows that freaks out when you actually use your computer like in Vista? I so hated that.
Yes, but it's been significantly reduced by default in Win 7. Vista's UAC drove everybody up the wall, including me, with its constant nagging. In 7, there's a now a slider you can adjust to further reduce or even turn off the nags.

You could turn off the nagging in Vista as well, but there was no slider. UAC was either on or off. Either it nagged you constantly, or it wouldn't nag you at all. Win 7 lets you change it so that you only get nagged when it's something really important.

Tronfaq the reason is somple. My hardware is out of date for windows 7 in order to use it. And there is an alternate route than sticking with windows only and that is with the linux community and based with the experience that I have already with Linux and the unix environment. For me at a personal experience provides more benefits than what windows 7 has to offer than switching the taskbar chaged. With 350+ variety of linux flavors out and diffferent GUIS in linux to use. It is just the matter of which one you want to have on a computer. Windows doen't have all the different guis out there like Linux has as for it's own.

Plus I have already seen it running on a demo computer at a local shop and it did not impress me because of the change. Also the other thing as well for going the linux way the hardware requitements is a lot less than what Windows demand for it's basic set up. Minimum requirements for ubuntu 9.04 is 256 megs of ram and 4 gigs of hard disk space with all features and applications installed for it already. Windows Vista and windows 7 requires at least 1 gig of ram and about 10 gigs of ram just for the operating system alone. And no other applications.

Both my laptop and desktops are running with about a gig or two of ram and perform marvelously without even swapping to the drive with all the applications installed. It makes a big difference even performance wise.

That doesn't have anything to do with liking the new Windows 7 taskbar or not. But I can understand why you might not want 7 or be interested, then.

Plus I have already seen it running on a demo computer at a local shop and it did not impress me because of the change.
Ah, see now that's different. If you'd told me before that you already tried Windows 7, then I wouldn't be wondering why you don't like the taskbar. Fair enough.

Cause you never asked Tranfaq. I think there was a memory leak somewhere up there that you had assumed that I didn't see it. And you know assume makes bum out of two people. But no worries about it it's water under the bridge from here on in. Right tronfaq? We'll leave it at that for both of us.

Smart aleck. I did ask, and got you to explain why you didn't like the new taskbar (because you'd seen it demoed in person).

Anyway, no worries. It's all good.

Thats good to hear. On Vista, it would nag you for turning it off but it was only on boot up that I seen it.. but left that stink'n red icon in the task bar...

Yeah, I was aware about the processor specs but didn't know about no 3D gfx emu. One thing good about it is that someone may make a 3Dfx and/or Nvidia/ATI emulation for those cards... but you did mention that games seem to run better in 7 so thats good news too.

Thanks for the input..

There is, though it won't kick in until March 2010. Windows will start nagging you to upgrade to the final version and shut down every couple of hours. But the retail version of 7 will be out in October this year, which is long before the RC trial ends.
