Interesting Orange Box Discovery

on Saturday, March, 28, 2009 6:31 PM

It's probably best to start at the beginning. I'm uninstalling and reinstalling the Orange Box for my own purposes, but I want to to keep my save files. So I go through the directories of the Orange Box copying the save files when I come to Team Fortress 2. Before I remember that it has no save files, I go hunting through folders for them until I stumble across a folder marked "sounds" in mostly .wav and some .mp3 formats.
Curious, I click on them and discover that among sounds fo the game, this folder contains sounds from Beavis and Butthead and the Simpsons. Small discovery, but interesintg to me nonetheless.
The folder also contains the opening songs played when Team Fortres 2 is started up. I'm excited because I love those songs Opened in iTunes, they name themselves "Playing With Danger", "Rocket Jump Waltz", and "Team Fortress 2" by Valve Studio Orchestra from the Team Fortress 2 album.
For those intereested in finding this folder:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\\team fortress 2\tf\sound
Oh, and be sure to click on "knockout"
Enjoy

That sound folder actually contains sounds that you have downloaded from other servers (sans the UI folder).

You can also get the Team Fortress 2 Soundtrack, along with the rest of the Orange Box soundtrack, from the demo for Audiosurf on Steam.

And I would think TF2 would have save files, considering it tracks how long you've played as each unit and whatnot.

Btw, any idea where I can find the sound files for each class? I've been looking through the folders and I can't seem to find them.

Don't quote me on this because I'm not exactly sure on how these things work, but I believe all your information for TF2 is stored on Valve server somewhere.
As for the sound files... if you explored every single sound you'd notice that a few are from Half-Life 1... so it's possible that, because TF2 was bought as aprt of the Orange Box rather than alone, some of TF2's sound effects are stored in another game's files, though i seriously doubt this. Likely it too is stored on a server somewhere.
Oh, and I now have the three TF2 songs on my iPod

Yeah, and thanks to the demo for Audiosurf, I have the soundtracks for Half Life, Half Life 2, Ep1, Ep2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal on my iPod, lol.

But back on topic, I'm pretty sure that the sound folder is server download stuff, because I've got 2 folders of Quake sound files (i.e. DOMINATING, MEGA KILL, etc..) in my sound folder. where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Haha I know, right? I began laughing uncontrollably after I played that. I'm just surious as to how those sound files got there because around 90% aren't even in TF2. About 5 are from Half-Life, in fact.

You ever notice that when you join a server, sometimes it says:

Downloading team fortress 2/tf/sound/quake/killingspree.mp3

That's because the admin that is running the server uploaded his own custom sound files in the map. Sometimes the admin uses sounds from Half-Life and Quake and other sources. I remember one time I got a "THIS IS SPARTA" sound greeting when I joined the server.

The only TF2 files that I know of that are stored on Steam's servers is your achievements and saved game files, so that no matter where you log into Steam, you always have the same stats you last had, instead of having to bring a copy of your save files to every other computer you play on. Everything else... maps, textures, sounds, models, props, lights, and movies are in GCF files.

TRON.dll said:Btw, any idea where I can find the sound files for each class? I've been looking through the folders and I can't seem to find them.

If you download GCFScape, you can open up the GCF files and download all the sounds for the game, including weapons, class voice overs and additional music. Since everything else is in GCF files, you can also download everything else in there.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Also upon reinstallation, an notification popped up stating that I could play my games from anywhere by logging into my Steam account... not sure if this is word-for-word, but it does have its implications. Does this mean that if I download Steam on another seperate comuter and log into my account, that I can play the Orange Box without installing it on that computer (minues the save files escpet for TF2)?

Your Steam account contains information that states which games you have purchased on that account. Basically, it means that if you download Steam onto another computer, you can install any games you own onto that computer.

However, say you're playing TF2 on one computer, and you installed it from your account onto another computer, and someone starts up TF2 on that computer, you're kicked off of your copy of TF2, as you can only run one Steam game/copy of a Steam game at a time.

You may wanna check out the Steam FAQ guide sometime. It's pretty informative.

What's even more interesting is that the only starting tune to be missing out of the four that you can randomly start up with is "Art of War". The other three are there, so where are they keeping the last? I have yet to find out...

There's a fourth? Hm that is odd.
So can I install the Orange Box on another pc without any trouble from Steam or Valve?

Yah, yah, it's the one that's like... entirely drums and percussion to simulate gunshots and such.

And yes, you can. That's the beauty of steam, you can move computers without having to buy it again. The only thing is you have to be logged into your steam account to play it, so you can't install it on their computer and be able to play it. Sure, you can install it, but they wont be able to play without your password. If they buy it from steam though, they wont have to re-download it.

It's a very effective system, I have to say. Hard to get around

Speaking of Team Fortress 2, I was on a server tonight, and this happened:

TRON.dll: EVERYBODY.
TRON.dll: I HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE.
TRON.dll: I JUST LOST THE GAME.

Then the game started acting glitchy for a few seconds. Then I died and I was disconnected. I'm thinking to myself "wtf?!" until a box pops up and says "ERROR. Disconnected: "The Game""

So apparently, losing the game got me kicked, lol.
