Identity Chakram?

on Wednesday, March, 25, 2009 8:03 PM
One user that recently edited Tron Wiki stated an interesting fact that I didn't realize. You guys noticed that the new identity disk from Tron 2 isn't really a disk but more like a wheel-shaped weapon...well this unique weapon has got a real-world counterpart and it's called a Chakram.

Guess what other famous character besides our own Clu has used this? None other than Xena:

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised someone didn't point that one out before, it certainly matches.

The actions of the identity disk in TRON is used very similar to the historic reference to a chakram.

I just read up on Lord Vishnu on wikipedia, who used a Sudarshana chakram, so to make this easier to type I'll quote wikipedia.

"Lord Vishnu is depicted holding the chakra from a central hole, with his index finger. The disc spins around his finger. According to the Puranas, he would release it and it would do the required deed and return to his finger. It is revered as a divine weapon. In another version, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Devi jointly have the capability of operating the chakra.

"The Sudarshana Chakra has lots of abstract imagery as well. It is believed that Lord Vishnu is like the Sun, and the planets of the solar system revolve around him, in a disc-like form, creating the impression of the Sudarshan Chakra. Lord Vishnu is very commonly worshiped by people having faith in Astrology.

It is also considered to be a symbol of enlightenment, hence in various drawings it is depicted with a brilliant glow.

Lord Vishnu is believed to be the "Protector/Provider" of the Universe. He is depicted lying across the entire expanse of the Universe (Vishwadharam) form. The Sudarshan Chakra in his hand depicts the control over the various stars and galaxies, as if they all orbit around him.

"In tantras Sudarshan Chakra is personified in a form of deity. In deity form he is described in three main forms 8 hands, 16 hands and 32 hands. Most popularly he is worshiped in 16 hand form, where he is shown as a powerful worrier man standing in pratyaleadh posture(with slightly bent left leg in posture of movement) at the center of flames emitting from blazing chakra. He is wearing red clothes, fair complexion, yellow matted hair locks emitting flames and three golden eyes. He has fanged mouth and looking wrathful. In his sixteen hands he is holding disk, conch, noose, goad, club, axe, spear, stick, shataghni(fire emitting weapon with hundred pores), sword, Shakti(Vel a special shaped spear), bow, arrow, thunderbolt, mace, pestle and trident. In this form he is suppose to be giver of boons of victory over enemies, wealth and freedom from disease. There are Kavaches, Stotras and Sashrasanamam available for Sudarshana. Most famous Stotra of Lord Sudarshana is Sudarshana Shataka by Koor Narayana Jeeyar."

Wow, that's some weird stuff. Sounds like they had a TRON glow fixation back then... haha

Interesting.

Personally, seeing as how the original identity disc was based on the Frisbee, I associated the TRON 2 identity disc with the more advanced Aerobie.

Which, by the way, is totally kick-ass.

Addendum: Interesting note on the origin of the Frisbee name from a 2007 Associated Press story on the 50th anniversary of the name change from 'Pluto Platter' to 'Frisbee':

Frisbee's name is a spin-off from a now-defunct Connecticut bakery, the Frisbie Pie Co..

New England college students often tossed empty pie tins around for fun, a habit that led them to refer to the Pluto Platter as a "Frisbie."

Wham-O co-founders Rich Knerr and Arthur (Spud) Mellin first obtained the marketing rights to Morrison's invention in January 1957.

Less than six months later, Knerr made the fateful decision to embrace the "Frisbie'' nickname, although evidently he was unclear on its spelling, making it "Frisbee."

Ah, the Glaive from Krull.

Cool weapon, to be sure, but I don't think bladed or edged weapons fit into the TRON universe.

Tron 2.0 had a hybrid type of disk- cluster. Which by the way was the most abused weapon ever.

The predator's disk (which attached to his whole hand) if I remember correctly had blades that popped out like a sawblade and moved like the ID disk.

I think they ought to have a deeper plot with the weapons but it's hard to say what you could do with today's version. Since it may very well be a cluster of 2 or 3 disks, and have lasers that slice the victim up in various ways depending on the abilty of it's user.

i never used it. i couldnt [didnt take the time to] figure out how to use any of the other weapons other than the LOL and that was because i had to. i made it though the game mostly just using the disk, though it was on an easy setting. i plan to try and beat it again on the hardest level eventually and i imagine i will have to learn how to use some of those other crazy gadgets

Yeah, the fact that the ring looked like a chakram didn't escape my notice. I guess not only was it done for the "cool" factor, but it may have some other significance. Spiritual message, or otherwise.

Though, frankly, as cool as it looks and all . . . I kind of hope it's unique to this version of CLU. I don't think I'd like to see this completely replacing the traditional Identity Disc.

I wonder if, for simplicity's sake, they'll end up calling it an Identity Ring or just a Ring.

It would be fun if they introduced some of the weapon concepts from Tron 2.0 into the film. Not all of them, but I could definitely see the LOL as being very useful and practical.

THEY GOTTA HAVE THE LOL! Seriously, that was the best thing about Tron 2.0 (one of the best things, I should say).

Agreed.

although... a real version of the game - one that would be ATLEAST up to par with the game I've envisioned, we have a commonality on that point.

The movie must be atleast as good as the fans have envisioned this game.

We can atleast hope for a new PC game. One not even close to the 2003 version, but better than the movies. unlike the matrix - TRON 2.5 Tron takes the world or something. X10! It's one of the original places of cyberspace, and should be huge in respect to today's technology.

It doesn't, but an Aerobie makes perfect sense being that it's an evolution of the Frisbee.

The LOL Rifle is inflicting blunt force trauma, just like the identity disc.

I can dig it. I like the Glaive, too.

I just really hope not to see bladed weapons of any sort in TRON. The minute the precedent is set, we'll have ninja programs, samurai programs, knight programs, assassin programs, Jedi programs, Sith programs, and all the other over-used blade-wielding warrior stereotypes coming out of the woodwork.

It'd be nice to for TRON to keep its own paradigm undiluted.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

Translation: Axel has the same weapon

But not quite, they have edges on the weapons.

Also, I much prefer the original identity disc myself! However, I don't mind a variety of weapons much like what was shown in Tron 2.0

How do you suppose you deflect attacks with the Chakram? It doesn't look as... solid as an ID Disk.

And how about the Energy Claw from T2.0? It looks kinda bladed...

I'm sure you deflect attacks with an ID Ring in the same manner as you would with an ID Disc. The hole in the ID Ring isn't large enough to allow the passage of either an ID Disc or an ID Ring, so an opposing disc or ring would probably impact on a defending ring in much the same way that it would impact on a defending disc, and be deflected; that is, of course, unless some bad-ass like TRON - who has been known to break opposing discs in half - is doing the throwing.

The Energy Claw looks like a claw. If it weren't for the pointy fingertips it would've been the Energy Glove, which somehow doesn't sound near as menacing as "Energy Claw." Also, the Energy Claw has no melee attack, therefore no blades.
