I'm pretty sure the influence of the band - Alice in Chains stemmed from the former lead singer's family member - who was in or possibly killed during Vietnam or WW2 (been a while, so I don't remember the fine details)
So the outcome was victorious from which they wrote of, even though they focused on the warrior side of the battle.
The USA and Russia were the superpowers, and we gave them europe, or they wouldn't have been our enemies during the cold war, they'd be USEU citizens.

So yeah USA saved the world and got burned. Dunno why they used Russia if there is a connection to the band's focus if it stems from Vietnam. I may look it up later..
