It's not the ram, Jaz-- I tried it with another set of ram sticks just in case.
At this point, it could be that the video card is drawing too much power (but it doesn't seem so possible thinking about it.)
Ram sticks are definitely okay. Tested fine.
I can't be certain of the other hardware other than the fact that I swapped out the PSU.
What really bugs me though is that Silver and I weren't able to understand the results when we booted my machine into linux (using a cd) -- the computer was definitely running pretty normal but we weren't quite able to figure out if it was also showing the same CPU overload stuff.
However, I do understand that the CPU overload is from the constant hardware interrupt messages that are showing up in a detailed version of the task manager that Silver downloaded a while ago trying to figure this problem out.
Is L4D out for PS3 yet? :P

Hmm. here's the list of stuff I do when I have something come up:
load windows cd to repair windows. type the following: fixboot
fixmbr
restart and get the latest drivers
uninstall service pack 3/2 and other microsoft installed apps.
uninstall drivers
reinstall everything, mobo drivers/video and update XP.
also look through the error console and look for problems, you may need a hotfix for a memory leak, or something related to another issue.
Watch the programs in the task manager, if the count keeps rising on a application, that's where a potential leak is. or it's in steam/l4d..
Hope you get it figured out. |

Kia if I may ask this is anything out of the ordinary overclocked on your computer? Like Frontside Bus, CPU, etc? If you did it might have an effect on the PSU and drawing too much power. I remember when you got this system brand new which was about a year or so ago.

Silver finally found the problem-- it was some kind of weird conflict with some Windows driver and HDMI chip on video card that was causing the crazy CPU usage.
Now my CPU usage is back to normal, no more machine lag!
(Still want to kick someone at Microsoft in kneecaps for this hassle.)
Woohoo, back to L4D now!

Was it a interrupt request between the HDMI and what ever else it was?
Me I just got in a 400 gig hard drive over here and on the way of formatting it with ntfs on my other computer over here. A simple AMD Atholon 1.8ghz 1 gig of ram, 400 gig primary, 40 gig secondary for databackup. IBuilt in Nvidia video card, netowrk and sound car. I'm debating to put in windows XP and slap in Tron 2.0 and see it between two computers locally or conver it into a server over here. And have something ele done with it. I have almost every version of windows server here except for Windows NT 4.0 server.

Anyone preorder L4D2? Demo is available now for preorderers. I hear it's pretty sweet. Public demo is available next week. I'll probably pick it up when it goes on sale sometime in the future, lol.

Sure did! Pre-ordering is the only way to get the baseball bat in single player, plus they knock $5 off the price if you pre-order.
I was on for a little while last night and I played some single player on Advanced just to get the feel for it. Somehow, fighting in the daytime is scarier than doing so at night; maybe it's because now you get a good look at the hoard of zombies coming for you.O
The Jockeys are just plain evil little ********, and the zombie cops in bullet-proof vests and riot helmets are very difficult to deal with when they come in the middle of a hoard.
Valve did a great job, and I look forward to the full game in November.
Also, I'm still playing the original; I've only had the time to get halfway through Crash Course, and I'm nowhere near having completed Last Stand, so I've got a whole lot of playing to do.

I've seen left for dead at one of my suppliers places that I have here. I can say it is definately interesting though. But it is not for me though. I've tried it at the shop to see how it is. ANd also tried the 3d goggles there as well to see what it would do. Which was not much since you need to use both eyes at the same time. Since I use both of mine independently form each other on certain things like driving and reading. And switch to either eye at any given time over here. I found that the 3d goggles were not a good thing for me I think the goggles were from Nvidia I think.
Here is the link to those goggles there from Nvidia so you have an idea what it looks like.

Last night I was playing single player on expert difficulty, and it was really tough! They throw a ton of zombies at you - way more then the first game does - and the new special infected are diabolical things.

oh god, that they are. The first map is actually pretty hard on easy x_x (getting the gas cans and hoping the specials don't catch you.)
Oddly, despite my fear of clowns, the carnival map is my favorite.
