Kubuntu

on Sunday, November, 02, 2008 6:22 AM
Well... I've been with Ubuntu for about a month or so and I'm really impressed. Went to upgrade it though to 8.10 and I made the mistake of getting rid of my configuration during the major upgrade. I should have just stuck with the LTS, but I'm stubborn.... and I also messed up on some other things (shows that I'm still very inexperienced when it comes to Linux)... which is good cause that is how I learn best.. trial and error.

However, I'm using this opportunity to install 'Kubuntu' since it uses KDE packages and I it will give me some experience points using that interface. I might even like it better than Gnome (which is a little hard to say since I really really like Gnome). I know next to nothing about the differences between Ubuntu and Xubuntu, so I think Compucore may have to explain a few things to me about it.... but knowing me I'll try Xubuntu sometime in the future.

Well... wish me luck in my adventures of the many flavors of Ubuntu-Linux.

Yeah Kubuntu resembles kind of the windows environment. Same with Xubuntu but it is used for slower computers. And somewhat resembles windows a little bit. But where they place certain things is slightly different. And as for which interface is more preferable is on a individual basis. Some will like GNOME, other will like KDE or XFCE. For me. personally its the gnome.

The next step for me is to try out Sun Solaris 10 over here. I have it on DVD over here. Also Qixx If you go under alternate sites on ubuntu. You'll find a couple of other things of interest like Mythbuntu. Make your own home personal PVR with linux and another one that deals with making movies under the linux environment.

Yeah.. I read about Solaris. I'll have to check it out sometime.

I decided that I don't really care much for the K-Desktop so I'm sticking with Gnome. Before I do a major upgrade again, I am so going to need to just stick with LTS since I'm still a newbie to Ubuntu.

Right now I'm installing a new Destop GTK2 theme thing. I found an application that does that so I don't have to install it individually.

Hey... How do I log into 'root' in Ubuntu. It never gave me the chance to set a password for 'root'.

One place where you can go for downloading it directly is http://www.ubuntu.com Which is the main one from Conical which has gnome by default as the interface. The have as well kubuntu and xubuntu. they have links coming from the other places. It all depends on which interface you want to have. I'm using gnome interface on both mt Dell GX150 and on my Thinkpad 2568-bqu. but I have large hard drives in both of them. My laptop has a 120 gigabyte hard drive. and my GX150 from Dell is using a 250 gigabyte hard drive. and I'm only using like 3% on my 250 gig and about 5-10% of the space for my laptop.

If you like the interface that is on ubuntu, Kubuntu or Xubuntu you download the ISO or order them online and they send you the CD between 5-8 weeks.

Xubuntu is the lightest one of the three that are there. Requires only a 128 megs of memory. And 192 megs when installing.the operating system.

One any one of the three while instlling they will install as well some application installed by default. Other applications that you want to add into it you can go into add/remove application and choose which other applications you want to add onto the computer. They usually take 2-4 gigs at first but will expand as you add more applications to what is already there.

Quixx by default when you did the first installation of ubuntu or kubuntu. It had asled you for at least one account to start off with. Usually this would have been the admin or root account. But if you did like I did since I am the only user on either laptop or desktop. I just entered my name and the what nots. WHen it comes time to add/remove software for example. It will pop up requesting for a password then. And what you had entered in the first account. That will be the password for root.

I know it is not clear in the beginning when doing the installation of Ubuntu. But usually it is your default password when you log into ubuntu when you use your login name and password. Root wold be root and your current user password.

Hope that this will help you out.

I just noticed something here and I am running it on my desktop ubuntu computer. I had replaced the internal hard drive with a cd burner which I got out of another machine an old hp which was ripped for parts and all that. I had taken out the cd burner out of that computer. I had placed it into my current and I'm running brasero cd/dvd burner software on it.And testing it out for doing some cd burnings on it. And so far it is working fantastically for burning. The maximum burning is 4X and right now is running at 4.6X and it works no problem over here so far. Man I love linux here and no extra drivers for burning it to the cd-r over here.

Outside of a screwy Nvidia driver issue (accually it was a monitor issue with KDE for some reason) I decided to just stick to their Gnome version and this time I really decked out the GUI... I love it...

Oddly enough, I used 'root' with my user (qix77) password and it didn't take. Said that I was a jerk and I couldn't play with the other kids with 'root' access.... but I'll figure it out. I really don't need to be screwing around with root for a while anyways since I need more experience with the OS..

I did screw up a configuration somewhere cause my Usplash program isn't responsive (nor is Gnome Art). I think I downloaded some bad libraries or libraries that just conflict with something or another. I might just uninstall all the custom crap and only download the stuff I know (leave it to me to get ahead of myself.. lol).

Despite the areas that I'm still ignorant about, I really do like Linux so very much. I hope that since 'Vista' has had a bad rep, that more game developers will also have a compile or something for Linux as well. Some of the top companies still do, but more would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with you, Comp.. I made a backup of TRON just to test out the drive (that and I don't want to scratch my retail disc), and I was really impressed how quick it was. I almost thought there was an error cause it finished so quickly and I wasn't use to that. I have a 16x DVD drive and using high-end software in Windows, it still took about 4 mins to burn a full disc.. but in Ubuntu it took about 2.7 mins and I couldn't believe it. So I watched the movie today and now I have to ping into our thread... so I'll go do that now.. abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

I do have to say (as being a computer tech under many Windows operating systems) is that Linux can be a turn off at first glance for a Linux newbie that is use to MS's file structure. There are areas that don't seem to make sense unless you stick with it and figure it out... That is when the 'impressed factor' kicks in.

Also, I do have to say that it is so cool to freak out my girl friend when she sees this really odd desktop and then she says, "uhh... WTF did you do with Windows?" and I say, "Thats not Windows, baby.".... lol... that was such an awesome moment. Also, freaking her out over the 3D Compiz cube is so very priceless. Now she thinks that I'm some sort of elite underground guy and all I am is just some dork that likes to screw around with operating systems.. lol... (let the truth be known).. :P

Although Linux is a very good (and smart choice) when choosing an OS, I still can't say that it's a good choice as a replacement for Windows if you work a common desk job, or a computer tech that spends most of his time fixing issues in XP and Vista (like me). The ONLY reason why I say this is because Windows is mainstream. Because of this, most developers (companies) depend on Windows as a standard to sell their software. As a small business guy, I understand this, but it is a real shame that the rest of the world is oblivious to Linux.

So... the question is... Will Linux snatch away the title from Microsoft? Very doubtful... Once again, it all comes down to the common user. The ones that only use their PC for getting online, using MS Office, and storing music and photos. In their mind, Windows exist, and nothing else... Maybe Apple... but most of them only briefly hear about it. I guess in their mind set, 'If there isn't Windows, then why have a computer?'.....

Plus... keep in mind that most people don't like change. I think that if MS goes under, the PC market will suffer a great deal and there will be a massive confusion among the common users... and they may go Apple just because of a TV ad..

Which wouldn't really be a bad thing. Mac OS isn't Linux but it's a really good OS. I think Apple would have conquered IBM and MS a long time ago if they stuck to software and had an open market (then again, so could have Commodore Amiga if you think about it). I believe that HP might have been on that bandwagon early on if that happened in the 80's.

Too much spilled milk (yes.. I said spilled instead of spilt cause my spell check sucks magerly... lol), and we have what we have.... I'm not disappointed, but I do realize that there are better options among us.

When I looked at it myself when I started using ubuntu gnome about three years ago myself over here. I had seen something special abou i that would change in some cases people's Ideal about the linux world. And it was the simple fact that it lets the end user do what they want to do with their own computers. And it is true that MS is main stream as for a standard desktop system. Some users ranging from the power users to total noobies. Which we were all noobies at one point in time some of them just don't want to think different when they come upon something like Linux. I enjoy using and still like to learn a lot from linux. Its a fresh meat market of information of what can be done with a computer. And there is a lot that can be done where you can make it better for the general public as a whole.

I had found that some people do not like the fact that with the hardware that is out there is mainly used for either the windows or MAC OSX market. And some of those new hardware hasn't been developed under Linux. Or hasn't had a chance to get developed under Linux yet. And most developers won't developed it under linux because they don't understand or don't use linux at all.

Some of them should to give them experience and make them more flavored as programmers for it. And broaden their skills as well. I still think as well that Linux in general should have a chance. I know some companies that are using linux, Unix and other OS's that small companies would not use.

I think the most weird look I had ever gotten was either from Noobies who haven't heard about it. Or from seasoned tech's that nevered hear about it until they take a look at the laptop that I have with it installed on a second hard drive and test it out for themselves to see what it looks like afterwards.

I think that's what the main issue is. Most people don't know that Linux exists. I could go next door and ask my neighbor if he knows about Linux and he'd say, "What in the world is that?"... However if I asked him if he's heard of MAC or Windows then he'd know what I'm talking about.

I still think it would be cool if someone put a TV ad about Red Hat or something. Perhaps have Ubuntu sponsor MySpace for a week or something. May not cause an exodus, but it would get the name out there and people who are curious might actually check it out and like it. Plus you can't beat the price (free)..

If more people used Linux, then the hardware and software support will follow. It's all in the numbers I suppose.

BTW: There are sooooo many lightcycle games out there for Linux. Really cool..

Oh yeah I get always those donut glazed looked. Until i splash some hot coffee on their laps after mentioning about Mac and Windows.

Maybe the linux community should do something like what Microsoft had done with vista and call it something else. Mind you with linux there is something like 350+ distro to go through. Ubuntu clan is good for new people or you and myself who already know about that. And Red hat that has been around for the longest time.

Oh yeah too many to count on my hands and feet. I would need a few other people to help out on the coun on the female side. I think I may be able to do something about that with my web server over here that I have over here. And include some screenshots and the what nots. Just need some help with one other friend that I am working with on the same thing. We're combining some things together as one thing together.

Thanks... It took me a long time to figure out that I can't install an upgraded version of Compiz for Ubuntu Hardy Heron... I tried many times and it wouldn't work and it kept screwing up my desktop, so I found someone that posted in a forum the easiest way. Just install via Add/Removed and then upgrade it with some code (which he provided) and I did... Everything worked..

I had Compiz installed before but it's just that it had minimal features so I wanted it upgraded... took forever to figure out how but, it's cool..

Oh.. I found out the 'root' problem I was having. Turns out that Ubuntu doesn't like users to log into root (at lest the version I'm using) so it wants you to execute 'root' commands via the console using the 'sudo' command. I still need to learn all the commands and how they are used in correct context. I might even just pick up a Linux book so I'll have something to take with me to read.

Yeah that is what I did a lot myself through the different versions of ubuntu over here since Hoarty Hedge hog. With the good old text based installation. But I am like you usually did a humongous searchs for certain things for my machine on hardware or software stuff. Then boom everything fell into place afterwards. Take a look into Ulmatix as well on ubuntu forums. It is added extensions like codecs. Or added things like images, themes and all that which may not be already in the add/remove programs. Ones that are already there in that part of linux and in ultmatix. I'll use more or the default one. But updated codecs I'll always install in and added themes.

Thanks for the input, I'll go check it out tonight.

I had to modify my theme a few times to get it to my liking. I used the CTU (from 24) window theme then I added the icons that I found on Gnome eye candy, then I found two desktop backgrounds on someone's website... Then I downloaded the 'Firefox' logo (B&W) from another site and added them as as caps to the cube/sphere. Worked out and I loved it...

I was at my local computer store a small shop that I know since their parent company had started up almost 20 years ago and started to branch out everywhere. I was there this afternoon bringing all of my ubuntu, kubuntu and xubuntu over there plus a couple of other distros I had here. Spent about 2-3 thours there while the tech was making the ISO there directly and wants to set one up for his clients. I might be able to help them out in being a tech for linux for them. And just charge for helping in servicing their computers if they go that route. A couple of the techs there heard about it and want to test it out there in store to show the clients. It might be profitable for both them and me Money wise and good for their client since they know more of the parts they need. Something might be good about it in the near future for me at any rate.

Yeah I know what you mean. I did that with one guy at a local flea market. When I we upgrading my laptops memory from 256 to 1 gig of ram. After running it with the one gig of ram the guy asked what OS it was. And showed it to him in both French and in English. Just to prove and to show that he could install the language packs for it and still use the same CD for it. Just when you log into the sytem you can tell i which language you want to be showing on the screen. Which is kind of cool. I had something like five or six different language packs installed on mine. And just to give him an idea it was not just limited to just one language. He thought that was cool.
