Hey old friend... I might need your help. Remember my wall computer? I'm thinking about installing Linux on it soon and I would love to get some advice from you.
I'm looking for a free downloadable Linux OS. Perhaps something that comes with a GUI (or I can download one). Hey, it's been since 2001 since I tried Linux so I don't know if K-Desktop is still around or not.
Anyways, I might have a lot of questions once I get things up and running. If I have a few questions, could you lend some help?

I'm going to see if I can find 'Red Hat'. I remember a long time ago they were mentioned to be the big players in the Linux world.. don't know if that is still the case. I'll see what I can find..
[EDIT] Or how about Ubuntu? How in the world do you pronounce that?
[EDIT] Looks like you have to buy Red Hat subscription or deal with a 180-day trial. hmmm.... I guess I'll go with Ubuntu. I hate having to try something I don't know how to pronounce... lol.... :Pwhere to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online |

Well of course ubuntu is a good version to try out they have three different interfaces for it. Ubuntu uses Gnome Xubuntu using a different interface for those who don't have a lot of memory. And Kubuntu for those who love the kde interface. I have tried all three of them on a computer over here. The xubuntu is good for those kind of computers that do not have a lot of memory in them like my old Thinkpad 1200 series that maxed out at 160 megs of ram. While Ubuntu an kbuntu with either the gnome or the KDE are nice as well. so long as you have 256 megs or more memory My current thinkpad with 1 gig of ram and a PIV 1.6 intl processor runs nice with either kde or gnome. Basically dealing with one of the three it is up to you if the interface matters a lot to you that will make the difference if not then either one.
The only one that I will not suggent is Sun Solaris 10 for the typical end user way overboard and too frightening for a newbie to use. and would not know where to begin unless you know your way around in it.
Even Fedora 9 does a nice job under either one as well for the interface. I don't usually tell someone which one to go with until they see the interface and let them decide. Personally I went with gnome of ubuntu or with fedora depending on the need under the circumstances.
Which reminds me I have to find some 168 pin ecc 256 meg for my netserver over here. 384 megs of ram is cramped over here for wht I am tryng to do with it. Hope that helps Qixx try one of them out and go with the flow.

Thanks, Comp...
Infact, I have Ubuntu installed already. I'm downloading and updating.
I was trying to update firefox for it (it's using 3.0 and I was trying to install 3.3) and it would not extract the files to the tmp/.mozilla directory.... I think this was one of the turn offs I ran across back in 2001 but I think that since I'm willing to understand this OS, I think that I can figure it out (and maybe even to tech it someday).
I'm just currently updating everything... I know nothing about Linux and remember less from the brief moment I spent with it back then. I do love the Ubuntu gnome interface.
Do you know of a good place online (maybe with videos) that is for beginners like me?

Greetings, Programs.....
I'm on my Ubuntu system and all drivers are working for sound and video, however it does not recognize OpenGL for some odd reason.
Anyways, I'm happy so far. Took me forever to figure this one out but I came this far and I really like it... but my computer is way too slow for this so I'm going to look at this as a test run and in time I'll build another one with better specs and use that as my Linux system.
Anyways.... Thanks, Comp... I know I'll have a lot of questions in the future, but if you can direct me to some tutorials for the newbie, I'd be greatful...
Ok.. I'm going to bed, see you guys tomorrow... |

Ok... I guess this I'm having the same discomfort that most advance Windows users have when using a Linux system for the first few days.
One thing I don't like is that I don't have access to just create new directories on the fly or just install something by clicking on and executable program like in Windows. Perhaps it's the version of Linux I'm using.
I still don't like it's file structure, but that isn't such a problem.
Looking at older tutorials, they talk about the 'root' login (which I am familure with but it's not used with my configuration of Ubuntu.)
Oh.. and the system specs I'm using is really slow..
I guess I just need to get use to all of this. It'll take a while but other than that, I really the the OS. I wouldn't say that it'd be a replacement for Windows, but I will say that it is something that I want to keep and learn more about.
I am impressed.. |

Just out of curiousity Qixx what are the specs for that wall mounted computer? Anything under 256 megs you'll notice a lag in power. But if your running at least 512 megs or better the speed will improve. I had noticed that when I wen from 256 megs to 768 megs then to 1 gig on my current laptop over here. when I am at 1 gig there is no swapping to the hard drive. And it flies like the dickens over here. And if id does swap out it neglable only a couple of K will be used. But still it is hardly noticable. And what is the cpu sped as well.
As for Open gl it might depends on the video card not all cards are capable of using open gl. My laptop is running a Nvidia radion chip set for the video so open gl came in automatically. Check the video cad to see if it is capable of handling open gl.
I like it as an alternative to Windows especially vista. THe only time that I have to go to vista is when I have to go into windows for something specfic to trouble shoot with a client or a friend.

It's an older system and I found out why OpenGL wasn't working. I didn't have it installed. Ubuntu didn't tell me about it until I tried to run a 3D Chess game. Said I needed all the Python OpenGL stuff, so I got onto their Synamptic thing and download them... so it works now...
Here are the system specs..
Intel PIV 1.7ghz
256 mbs RAM
Geforce 3
Onboard sound (AC97) had a little trouble but forgot to activate it in BIOS. Drivers work great.
One CD writer (old)
One Floppy drive (old)
Network Card
Instead of upgrading this system, I might just figure to keep it as is and invest in a new one (or wait till someone gives me a newer computer which happens from time to time) and then I'll see what it can do. I figured that RAM was an issue but I'm actually very surprised that it runs really good with 256mbs considering it is a new OS. Very impressive and I can see how it makes best use of hardware...
but...
Like all pro-open source stuff, it really hates it when I use proprietary drivers... lol... but it lets me anyways.. lol... It's just funny how it does it. It's like "OMG.. You Jerk!!! Don't do that... Proprietary is the DEVIL!!!!!".... lol...
I had to reinstall it cause I was messing with some of the root files (which was a mistake). I just got to remember that I can't treat Linux like Windows cause it's not Windows.
I do like it much better than Vista... It's just that I really need to spend more time learning about it.

Yeah I know the feeling when your just a windows users. I am still kicking and screaming against windows all the time. Call me an old git here I'm so use to the old Dos and VAX VMS structures that linux was familiar enough for me to use. ANd still use it over here. One thing that I would suggest Qixx and it's just me. True it works great with the minimum and that is the way that I had started over here 3 years ago when I got into Linux and Ubuntu. If you can bring it up to a gig or two of ram. You'll see it burning rubber and no sqapping after that. You'll be almost leaking in your pants when it loads up.
Alos take a look into the add/remove section there is literally tonnes of stuff in there to try and play especially games. I am in the midts at a recycling center for computers. I had past by today adn found a second cpu for my Netserver LPR that I have the only problem is the VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) was missing to go with it. If they had it I would have bought it on the spot. ANd then get some extra memory as well. I am currently running 384 megs of ram. And I need to get it up to 1 ig at least. And found another video card that will work with it as well compared to the 256K video card built in. So I can install ubuntu on it afterards. I'm currently running a Raid 1 with 2 18.1 SCSI wide drives on it. And need more space on it I think I can only go with an external raid array on it now.

If I can find compatible RAM then I will. It's a crappy motherboard by some company called 'PC Chips'. They no longer support it.
It took me a while to understand that the 'add/remove' was the way to really add programs. Unlike Windows, where you really don't add anything, but remove everything.. lol..
I do have a question....
If I find something that is outside of the Add/Remove list that I want to install (say something I downloaded from a website or wanted to install Unreal Tournament using the linux installs on the disk) how would I do that?
Thanks...

Well once you have ownloaded it from Unreal tournaments and unpacked it in a temporary folder somewhere. There is a set of instructions that come with it that lets you know that you need to get into a command prompt and install it manually from the instructions provided by them. I somehow figured your going to ask that and found some tech notes directly from the ubuntu groups on the same application.
To trouble shoot the installation
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=8053
To download the linux version from here.
http://unreal.epicgames.com/TournamentVersions.htm
It's usually stragiht forward with the commands for installation by cut and paste methods. They will let you know during the installation for any other files that are missing for installation before proceeding and gives you a chance to get them installed. In some cases like what I did for my drivers for my HP laserjet 1005. I just doenloaded the drivers and folloed the instructions and compiled it directly at the command prompt and was working withing 15-20 minutes after compiling it.

Ok... so I have it on my main computer now doing a 'duel boot' with windows. Now that I have it on a computer with a whole lot of good specs, I know what you are talking about. WOW...
The 3D desktop effects is super awesome. I managed to use reflection effects and the SkyDome with a background. AMAZING!!!!
My biggest beef are the games. Although there are a lot of good free stuff out there, not really a whole lot that can challenge my Geforce FX... which isn't really a problem.
I'll install Unreal Tournament 2004. I know how it runs in windows so with that I can compare it to Linux which I'm expecting it to run smoother in Linux since a lot of people had told me it does....
Wow... I'm super impressed... Good stuff here.

Yeah at least a gig of ram to make it run smooth as a babyies bottom. Also if your running multiple applications at the same time in ubuntu very little over head with 1 gig of ram.

I just realized something here. I just bought myself a DVDburner over here. Nothing too fancy and figured I wanted to get my laptop vista drive wiped and put back windows xp. But I was having problems with he software running under vista altimate. I swung my linux drive into the laptop and you know what. After getting some of the burning applications for dvd and burning ISO. It friggin work under the beast. Its like No way I just reburned my Windows ISO over here. And to top things off I have a kodak md863 digital camera. Downloaded the images and Video off of that and had no problems with it either. My face just dropped by a factor of three here.
The only thing I am going to do is to check for some good video making software that I can import quicktime files that the camera creates onto the SD card that I have on it. So I can do some nice video editing with it on my ubuntu linux disk than with my windows hard drive.
Qixx you know me as somewhat of a guru when it comes to linux. Even I was floored at this. I want to see if I can create a couple of dvd editing with it.
