Yeah... and what I am surprised is that the DVD burning software in my version of Linux is super impressive. I burned a 'Detonator' DVD (it's a tech disk for windows and can also bypass passwords so it's also like a hack) from an ISO and it was a full disk.. did it under 4 mins at 16x... It takes about 10 mins using Nero for Windows. Amazing stuff.

Ok.. here is a question for ya... Mesa3D is a library file set for OpenGL and I think it's exclusive for K-desktop... which I'm using Genome.... I found this really cool RPG that requires either that or equivalent (so I'm guessing my Python GL libraries should be good enough along site with some SDL file sets I think)... So I think I'm ok. However the files package is a .RPM file type and there are no other packages available (Red-Hat Package Manager) and Ubuntu strongly suggests that I don't use that filetype... I did find a manager but for K-Desktop but doesn't work with what I got.

So.. Here is the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything..... Is it true that most K-Desktop stuff isn't compatible with Genome?

Sneaking over to qixx Ah there is a really easy way of doing that qixx if your using a rpm package and you need to use it in Ubuntu you need to convert it over to a .deb since Ubuntu is a debian version of linux. Here is what I have found in order to help you out on that.

http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/23/installing-using-an-rpm-file/
And a google search for rpm to ubuntu.

Yes please show us what you have done I love looking at diferent desktops from UBuntu. Even mine is slightly standard to the norm of a desktop with just some simple pictures of a dear and special friend of mine over here that I tend to change the picture from time to time.

Not to put windows down but I think Qixx(Jody) would agree with me on this. That ubuntu and other distros provide something that is just unique to linux that windows doesn't offer as well. Even though I use windows on a couple of partitions over here for various things. I still prefer ubuntu or linux in general just because it does what I need it to do without any problems.

A bonus side of it you get to know your hardware a lot better than windows since your always tweaking it to death in good ways.

ANd thanks for the compliment there too Jody it is really appreciated.

I agree... but most importantly, it doesn't crash... as long as it's configured properly, it doesn't crash.

Drivers for Ubuntu is so much easier to deal with than earlier versions of Linux, but one thing I love is that it is less tolerant to misconfiguration, therefore you don't run into any problems once you have everything up and running.

On my system, though.. Firefox is very sluggish for some reason. Not in terms of internet connection (which is fine) but rendering a page seems to be a major task. I think there is something I need to do cause I know it's on my end.

Anyways... I love Linux..

Sometimes yeah that tends to happen with firefox on ubuntu. I can only imagine that it might be related with the video card interpreting the way the page is displayed. Not 100% certain though. But it could be a kink in firefox sometimes. i noticed that with firefox 3.XXX kept crashing under mt windows vista until I took version 3 off and put in version 2 and it's working fine now. Could be a whole slew of things.

But with linux once you have it set up properly the way you like it never goes down or gives you problems and that is what I love with ubuntu linux. Only if MS could learn to do this with their own OS it would be totally different. But you know how MS is they never listen.

I'm still going to change the splash screen. I want to make my own but I might just see if I can do it the easy way and find someone elses and see how it's structured first. Once I'm completely done, I'll try and make a video of it. I'll see if I can find a VCR or something I can port the video out to and then back in..... but I think my TV in/out fuction on my gfx card is damaged.... which is fine cause I can get one from my brother.

Hey Comp..

Ok... so I installed the 'Ultimate Edition 2.0' and having all sorts of issues. Sound drivers are not working (I have a Soundblaster ZS or something like that). I'm also having issues where certain programs are locking up and random crashes all over. I know it's my system.... so I'm thinking about just going back to regular Ubuntu.

When I was talking to you on the phone and discussing an idea for a concept of hooking up a computer to my TV, I was unaware of 'Mythbuntu' till tonight. It's an Ubuntu variant that uses MythTV and it looks really interesting. Suppose to be like a Linux DVR concept. I really like that idea alot... but I wonder if I can still use it like regular Ubuntu so that I can install games and other crazy crap on it.

Also (related above) I'm thinking about getting an ITX kit sometime this Summer (perhaps Atom or something) and using that for the TV add-on concept. My brother got an Atom and I'm impressed. Ran MAME and Future Pinball on it and it handles really well...

Qixx is this right after the updates on the Ultimate edition? Like when you go to in the admin section and to live updates in it. I know I had some problems here with one Kernel for ultimate edition where it would not shut down properly with my Lappy over here. Once I got the patch for it or the new kernel I should say it fixed it and shut down properly.

From what I remember with MythTV you should be able to use all the other features like the regular ubuntu and ultimate ubuntu. MythTV has just the set up of a PVR software installed from what I can remember over here. It should still ahve the other features like Open office, internet related stuff.

I am waiting as well from another techie guy close by. Actually one of my suppliers I should say. He's getting something from one of his clients. He got called to go by and pick it up. It might be several servers and raid array combined. If so he wants to pass it onto me I might be able to do something with it ANd really make a tron Mame machine combo with an encase enviroment with a couple of machines with windows and ultimate combine. And a KVM to swtch between them. If I can get a nice large lcd screen as well from one of my suppliers.

I have heard about the Atom cpu from Intel. From what I can tell you should be fine. Does the Atom use the reglar version of windows XP pro/home OS? Or is it a special version of the same OS that will runn on the other CPU's like Xeon, Opteron, Sempron, and PIV CPu's.

update Nevermind I went to cpu-world and found out that they come in 32 bit and 64 bit as well depending on cpu model. Take a quick peak of the specs here.

I'm not really sure since I haven't spent much time with it but my brother was running XP 32-bit on it and it ran fine. I'm thinking that it may just be a revamped P-IV or something. Since it's been out for a while, I'm sure there may already be Linux drivers/configs that will allow Linux to get the best use out of it. I'll have to do some research.

Something interesting about the Atom. N'vidia has made a special GPU card for it... It's called the N'vidia Ion. If I'm correct, it's sort of a spin-off variant of their Geforce 9 series GPUs, so thats kinda neat.

When I think of a free (and very stable) OS like Ubuntu, my head gets flooded with possibilities and I can come up with a bazillion projects that I would love to work on by just resurrecting old PCs and building small new ones. Stripping off the cases and making sleek mods intented to reduce size and weight... and for it to look nice in where it will be placed. For crying out loud, I even have an idea for Christmas lights next winter that are all controlled via Ubuntu... lol... just need to find the right software.

lol... I'm a nut, but thats what being a computer enthusiast is all about.. :P

[EDIT] The N'Vidia Ion is actually a complete system that uses the Atom CPU and has a built in GPU. Was just looking on it at N'vidia's website:

This is true. You know what be more interesting as well. Seeing the different versions of ubuntu in the next tron2 film. Which I think would be awsome and have some of us here be a part of that with voice overs or small bits as extra's in the background for little things within the film.

Yeah that reminds me of the via CPU that is out there somewhere. Its where you can use the small 2.5 inch hard drives from the laptops to go along with it. Really comaq and all that.

I'll tell ya what... Whatever custom desktop they use in Tron 2, I'm so going to customize KDE or Gnome the same way.... I know we'll be seeing a lot of computer screens...

Yeah.. that little Picco or whatever they call it. Really cool stuff to have a desktop PC the size of a 'Pop Tart' box. I dig stuff like that. Handy when you've run out of space in your house cause it's jammed pack with old desktop computers.. :P

Ok.. so as I mentioned on MySpace, I tried 'Damn Small Linux' and then tried 'Slackware' on this system. DS-Linux had a hard time installing for some odd reason. Slackware installed fine but I'm still too much of a newbie to dive into it...

I'm currently installing Debian (Gnome by default but going to try to switch over to Xfc). Here are the system specs I'm trying to recycle out of this old timer.

P-II 400mhz
256 mbs
20 gbs HDD
Geforce 3 RGB

Would have used Xubuntu but it just kept coming up with errors out the stinky poo.

I sware.. I've been through so many flavors of Linux that it isn't funny... but I've learned a whole lot about it all.

Hey.. if all else fails, it gives me a good excuse to try Solaris or AmigaOS.... I wonder if I can install AmigaOS barebones? I'll go look it up.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online
