On a related note, last June, I started working on a video series that was to feature an ASCII version of me. I was planning on producing short videos in which "ASCII Todd" would answer questions sent in by viewers, and/or questions that seems to keep reoccurring (like can you sneeze with your eyes open). Even set up a special e-mail account for this... that I never used. Along with an ASCII me would have been (hopefully) amusing ASCII animations thrown in - just little gags and stuff.

I shot the first installment of the show, but as usual, got quite fed up with my shoddy tools in postproduction and scrapped the whole thing... or at least put it on hold until I get better tools. I never completed the first video. Using my limited tools, the process was taking a lot longer than expected and wasn't worth the time investment. Using the proper tools, producing a single episode of this thing shouldn't have taken more than a few hours (of postproduction) total. The way things were going, it would have taken me several days to pump out a single 1 to 2 minute video like this. Not going there.

The ASCII rendering of me is using an ASCII image converter of my own design, BTW. It is the same ASCII engine I designed and used for the ASCII cyber dancer in Cutting Room Floor. Only works on 8 shade gradients though - not exactly a high-end ASCII rendering tool. Only does grayscale too. Works good for what it is though.

Do some searches on ASCII converters. You should find a few websites that allow you to submit a link to or upload a graphic and it will ASCII convert it for you.

Like I said - I made an ASCII converter of my own, but its not as powerful as many of the ones I've come across on the internet.

Well, I do and I don't.

I don't code in a true sense, as in a real programming language.

My ASCII image converter is a macro script. It reads an image of specified coordinates on the screen and then looks for the indexed color value of each pixel. It breaks down the color values in to 8 shades and applies an ASCII character to each shade. The logic is fairly simple, really. At least for a simple B&W ASCII image converter like the one I made.

Again - it was initially designed and used for the cyber dancer ASCII sequence in Cutting Room Floor.
