Greetings programs
It's been a while since I made a new Lightcycle model, but I usually make at least one a year in search of perfection. I was thinking about improving my old model again and thought I would take another look at the bonus dvd that came with the 20th anniversary edition of TRON. I watched a part of a documentary 'the role of MAGI' I think it is called, that I had missed previously. Anyway it shows a small clip of a MAGI animation of the construction of the Lightcycle. It answered lots of questions about the details of the model and I also thought it was a beautiful animation. I thought I would
make my own version of this, as it might help others when making a Lightcycle model. I also wanted to re-create a retro feel for the animation too. Well take a look ...

Hope you enjoy it.
Also I am just putting the final touches to the TRON comic I mentioned on my last post, so I should be able to post it in the next couple of days.

Wow, that's really cool. What program do you use to make these models?
Also it looks like some of the objects are a result of merging two together and then "cutting out" the unused parts. Is that true?

Wow, your model looks a lot better than last time, Eddie! Great job!

Yes, it is true. It's called CSG modeling where you have two simple objects and either add on or remove to create a more complex object; this type of modeling involves no polygons whatsoever. You can recreate this in almost any 3D modeling program with Boolean operators.
Here's the original footage from "Beyond Tron":

Oh... I so want some free time to play with my models again. Real life just keeps getting in the way.
Eager to see the comic,

Glad you liked it.
Bingo_Buzzard: I use 3d Studio MAX v6 and Photoshop CS2 for all of my 2d/3d work. I don't often use boolian operands in my 3d work, but that is how the original Cycle was made, so thats how I did it.
TronFAQ: thanks for fixing the link, I always mess that bit up!
Mr.Sinistar: Thanks for posting the original footage from "Beyond Tron", I thought I had the reference wrong, but I am away from home and only have my mobile phone for internet connection! Sloppy, I know, but hopefuly my animation makes up for it
wwwmwww: Me too, more time for TRON stuff would be very nice.
I am making similar animations for the other vehicles, I think its nice to see how all the 'building blocks' fit together, and hopefuly help other people to make more 3d models too.
Thanks as always for the good feedback.

Awesome building of a light cycle animation, ed keefe! Thanks for sharing that.
I was immediately reminded of the animation that was shown on the TRON DVD extras, of the light cycle being constructed (which Mr. Sinistar posted).
I think it's very cool, not just rendering light cycles, but rendering them using pretty much the same modeling technique that was originally used in the film.
You know - with all the intricate things people can render with their home computers these days, the coolest ones to me are always of well rendered TRON imagery. The 3D animation in TRON blew me away as a kid, and still impresses me very much today.
Carl - I hope you get back in to your TRON animations again too. I know how the real-life thing goes though. Never enough time in my days either. Oh well.
