Evel Knievel dies at 69

on Friday, November, 30, 2007 6:33 PM
From Yahoo! news:

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Evel Knievel, the red-white-and-blue-spangled motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over crazy obstacles including Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho's Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.

You can read the full article here.

I was very surprised to see that when I logged out of my Yahoo mail account.

If you are old enough to have seen TRON in the movie theater back in 1982, then you're probably old enough to remember the huge Evel Knievel craze of the late 70's. If you don't know who he is, you can learn a little about him on Wikipedia.

Pretty much everyone I knew had one of these Evel Ekievel stunt bike toys as a kid. They're still sold today (the more modern box shown here). I think I was the only kid who didn't own one personally, but I played with them at my friends house frequently. We used to make him jump over stuff... and usually in to a wall or the back of a younger sibling's head. Great memories. Pretty much anything Evel Knievel related got a lot of attention from me and the rest of the kids I knew back then. If he was on TV, you watched. If he was in the news, you watched/read/listened. If he was in the hospital with broken bones again, you were in awe over how many bones he had broken this time and would recite to your friends how he's broken every bone in his body at least once, which he used to point out in interviews frequently, if memory serves.

Rest in peace, bro. Thanks for some fun childhood memories.

Oooooh I had one of those!

Remember his rocket car that he tried to jump the Grand Canyon in? He was awesome.

Yes! It was a rocket powered motorcycle with wings, right? Man - EVERYONE was talking about that back in the day! I remember thinking how cool it was and asking my Dad if it could fly... and how my Dad told me that it could not fly even though it had wings and looked cool. I remember seeing him with the motorcycle, but I don't remember actually watching the event. I wonder if I can find a video clip of it...

EDIT:

Ok, didn't find any video of it (didn't look too hard), but I found some images of it. Apparently it was much more rocket than cycle. I'm not sure what I was thinking of. I have memory of a rocket motorcycle with wings on the side of it, but I guess that's not Evel Knievel's bike. Maybe that was on some TV show or something. Memory circuits failing. After seeing pictures of his rocket though, I did recall some vague memory of having seen it along with an explanation of how the jump (or fly over) would go.

I just looked it up - he had wanted to try to jump the Grand Canyon but couldn't get permission so he jumped Snake River Canyon instead in his rocket-powered Sky-Cycle.

Roll that around on your tounge and in your head for a moment - rocket-powered Sky-Cycle - yeah, the 70's were definitely boss!

R.I.P. Evel. I didn't know this until just now, but he lived in the county next to me. LOL.

Wow...bummer. 69 isnt that old these days.

I had a couple of his toys and also tried to mimic his stunts, which I am sure most kids did (it was even a running gag in the early Simpsons when Bart tried to jump Springfield gorge).

We set up the ramp. I was going to try and jump the wash in the alley behind my house.... and as I was peddling towards the ramp my bare foot.... yes bare foot.....slipped off the peddle into the front tire spokes.

Ouch. End of stunt.

Man the crazy things you do as kids. Rest in piece Evel.

Unfortunetly being only 24 I was a lil too young to and also living in the UK. I didnt hear much of him but I have seen online some of the things he did do. Even that I wasnt a fan (only because I missed the hype) its sad when anyone dies.

Awesome!

Thanks, Mr. Sinistar! I do have vague memory of seeing that many years ago.

I used to own the bikes, I remeber setting his head on fire(pretending he was Ghost Rider) and launching it. I also had the Snake River play set, w/ the Skycycle. Those were the days! R.I.P. Evel, and thanks for the memories!

Ahh! I forgot to comment on your image the other day, Daddyo!

Awesome TRONized Kenievel tribute image! If he were a TRON fan, no doubt, he would have been the first (and likely only) to ever jump a canyon... or bunch of tanks in a light cycle.
