This is my 4,499th post here.
I am in the process of going through some scans of Production Binders given to me by Syd Mead and one loaned to me by Steven Lisberger.
The one Steven had has a list handwritten on one page of what I believe are actors considered for the roles of TRON and/or Kevin Flynn.
Thought this might interest all of you. Here's the list:
Sam Sheppard
Harvey Keitel
American Gigolo (Assume this meant Richard Gere)
Chris Reeves
James Bond (Connery or Moore?)
Gary Busey
William Katt
Michael Rennie (From "The Day The Earth Stood Still")
Ordinary People (Assuming Timothy Hutton)
Bruce Jenner
Chuck Norris
Tommy Lee Jones
We know Peter O'Toole was approached, but can you imagine the movie with some of these other actors in the parts? Sean Connery as TRON and Richard Gere as Kevin Flynn? Tommy Lee Jones as TRON and Chuck Norris as Flynn?

Wow, I really thought this topic would be of interest and generate some discussion of who else might have been cool in the roles of TRON. Guess not.

Tommy Lee Jones, huh? He seems to be a bit old for a hacker/programmer like Flynn, don't cha think? 
EDIT: Man, whenever I hear Sean Connery anymore, all I can think of is: YTMND...or in this case, You're The Man Now, Tron!

Sorry... been on vacation or I would have posted sooner. Some of those people just don't fit the part.. even as their 1982 selves. Tron wasn't a rugged action hero and they needed someone they didn't play the typical "leading male" role.
William Katt is an interesting choice.. I could see him actually working in the role. Also possibly Bruce Jenner, but I'm not sure of his acting abilities.
Nicholas Cage and Christopher Reeve (From that era) may have made good Trons
I'll have to think about Tron and Sark though. Whenever I try and think about it all I see is Jeff Bridges and David Warner.

Peter O'Toole probably would have made a good Dillinger and Sark. And I could see someone else than Bruce Boxleitner in the role of TRON. (Bruce Jenner might have looked the part, at least.)
But nobody could replace Jeff Bridges as Flynn.

Probably Sean should be the next flynn But really I think that Jeff Bridges should be the one in for the original kevin flyyn.

Possibly Kurt Russell? (He was in "The Thing" that year)
The person to play Sark would also have to play Dillinger so it would have to be someone who fit the role of a corporate baddie. Ian McKellen could have made a good Sark (He was in The Keep that year as well) and Patrick Stewart would have made a good Sark as well (judging from what he looked like in Dune which was only 2 years later).

Oh man, the only Sark I can think of anymore is David Anders... I blame Alias.
But yeah, I think Kurt Russel might have been a possibility since he did do few flicks for Disney early on in his career.
Still glad how Tron turned out with its actors/actresses. However, seeing the list was definitely interesting and adds a quite different perspective.

Actually, just think of the permutations.
The biggest issue for us all is that we base the characters so deeply on the actors that played them that we lose sight of what it might have been like if someone else had played the part...
After all, under other circumstances, we might be sitting around here saying "Jeff Bridges? How could he have played Flynn.. Christopher Reeves is the only Flynn we ever could have had... Jeff Bridges would have been too whimsical"
On the other hand, imagine some of the adlibs we might have had...

Hmmmm.
I sometimes wonder what would have happened with different actors. The only chance we'd have to see that would be if they had have done a remake.
Of course, personally, I can't imagine the characters any other way... I guess I like it just the way it was.
