I just picked this up yesterday. It was sitting all by its lonesome on the shelf when I noticed it and simply couldn't pass on it.
I think I vaguely remember having seen this maybe once in the early 1970's probably between the ages of four and seven, but completely forgot it existed because as far as I know no one has broadcast it in many years.
If you like the old Rankin/Bass shows, and if you do, you know what I'm talking about, then you need to check this out, it's a trip and completely wicked-boss.

I agree with MutoidMan. If you are not familiar with the charms of this Rankin Bass Monster Movie, then you missed a piece of your childhood!

Heck I even want to buy the soundtrack, it's so 60's-spy-movie cool. It was released on CD in 2005 and it's on Amazon but only through other sellers; I'll try to find it in my area, first.

For some reason, I don't remember this one at all, and I thought I had seen most of them. I'll try and check it out.

I really didn't know they did anything else other than Rudolph and ... I think they did that one about Santa's childhood?

Wonder why I never saw this. Must not've been on TV locally. Youtubed it; didn't look familiar.
Seeing this, though, reminded me of old 70s shows I watched back in the day like Banana Splits, The New Adventures of Huck Finn (blended live action actors with cartoon), Danger Island, Gulliver's Travels (or Island?), Arabian Nights (or somethign like that); which I youtubed a few of. I swear there was a 70s cartoon of Gulliver's Travels, but can't find.
I wouldn't mind getting the Disney 1939 version of Gulliver's Travels. I wonder if it came out recently on DVD...

They also did the Peter Cottontail Easter one, Frosty the Snowman was one too I believe.

Oh wow, I saw more than I thought I did, but I know I haven't seen them all. They were the only ones that aired repeadly in the 80's and thereafter. The childhood and the Arabian Nights (I think) along with the Easter one was taped so I saw those... but otherwise. :| My parents only taped what programs (that were captioned in the 70's and 80's which were extremely rare!) they could back then for my sister to watch (and eventually, me.)

I remember the one with a young Fred Astaire Chris Kringle and the Heat Miser.
Edt: After a little research, Heat Miser was in "The Year Without A Santa Claus". The one I mentioned above was "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" with Fred Astaire as the narrator, and Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle.

I remember most of the Rankin/Bass specials, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen this one. If so, it was only once.
I wish someone would make more holiday specials in the same style as Rankin/Bass. Preferably, Rankin/Bass themselves! I know they still exist as a company, in some form.
But, alas, they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Man, I LOVED those Rankin/Bass TV specials when I was a kid! They were truly magical shows to me and I looked forward to them each year. There were the Christmas and Easter specials (several around Christmas, only one Easter stands out in memory).
I don't remember seeing anything Halloween based. I may have seen it once when I was really young and and just don't remember though.
The wife and I still look forward to watching the Christmas specials each year and try to catch them. We both kind of relive a little of our youth when we see them.
BTW - is that a Phyllis Diller character I see on the box art? I clearly recognize Peter Lorre to Phyllis's left. Rankin/Bass had a way with their simple yet effective character designs.

Yeah, I love those Rankin/Bass TV specials, too. I should pick them up on DVD some day.
Yes, TheReelTodd, that is Phyllis Diller. I watched the trailer on youtube, and they announced Phyllis' name/character.

Cool. I don't think I've ever seen this either. I'll have to check it out. Are there any differences between the release above and this one, in terms of extras or anything?

I just went to amazon to see if I could answer my own question. The DVD pictured at the top of the tread was released August 23, 2005. The one I posted a picture of was released August 19, 2003.
Amazon said this for the 2005 release:
Format: Color, DVD-Video, NTSC
DVD Features:
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono)
Production Art Gallery
Theatrical trailer
Poster and still gallery
And for the 2003 release:
Format: Animated, Closed-captioned, Color, DVD-Video, NTSC
DVD Features:
Production Art Gallery
Poster and Still Gallery
24 Page Booklet
So at first glance it looks like the 2003 release doesn't have the theatrical trailer and the 2005 release doesn't have the 24 page booklet or closed captioning. In reading the reviews I see these comments that I believe are talking about the 2005 release but its a little hard to be sure as amazon has the same set of reviews tied to both releases.
This newly re-mastered DVD has captured the film in all it's colorful richness.
The history of MMP's ups and downs is documented in an accompanying, richly illustrated, 24 page booklet...
So I guess that just leaves one question... does the 2005 release have closed captioning? I suspect that it does and its just an oversite that its not mentioned in the description. If so it soulds like its obviously the better release. Could someone here that has the DVD check and report back?
Thanks,

My copy, the 2005 release, most definitely comes with the 24 page booklet:
Also, the 2005 release is close captioned.

Hey, who else thinks that Francesca is smokin' hot?
BTW, Francesca was voiced by Gale Garnett; Gale had a big hit in the 1960's that she wrote and sang called "We'll Sing In The Sunshine." I don't expect the kids here on the sector to know this song, if you do then kudos, but if you're at least in your mid-thirties then I'm sure you know the song.
