Okay, I've owned a copy of Frank Herbert's Dune for 9 years now. And I've only just read it, not because I found it boring or anything I just didnt have much time to allow myself it get into it. Even though I never did read it I did collect all of the series including the new ones written by his son.
And I've got to say that I've been missing out! Its fantastic! If you have never read this book I really reccomend that you do. Not only has he made very indepth and complex characters for his book, but the whole universe itself is very deep. He has done what very vew writers have done and built a history for the story so you have that sense of there is something bigger going on behind what you are reading. Plus you also get how serious the events are within the story, due to the fact that you know on how big of a scale it would effect the Universe set in Dune.
If you've seen the movie and thought hmmm that wasnt good or you liked the movie and not bothered with the book because you know the story. Forget it, the movie is nothing like the book. They are completely different from eachother. Currently reading Dune Messiah now almost finished that and then I have another 12 Dune books to read so I'll be occupied for a long time hehehe. Plus another one is set to come out later this month so that will make 13 when I get it where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Dune is probably the best science fiction book ever written. Herbert was trying to tackle MANY different subjects at once and pulled them all off. I've read Dune many times and still manage to find something new each time.
Dune Messiah and Children Of Dune are "ok". They advance the story and you get to learn a lot about Paul's motives and how his "breeding" is manipulating him.
God Emperor of Dune, however, is a complete gem. It's set apart from all the other books and REALLY deals with a "new" character and a whole new set of issues. You'll really like that one.
I stopped after that. The next one in the series reads like a text book and is just plain boring. I started reading it... got a few pages in and just never went back. I hope to try and muddle my way through at some point.
I only read one new Dune book and it was about the Butlerian Jihad. It was plain awful. It was ubar violent when it didn't need to be, and obviously his son has been influenced by anime, because that's how it reads. It was TERRIBLE and I kind of skipped and jumped through it knowing I didn't actually care what happened, but just wanted to give it a chance.
The Dune movie is a fav of mine as well. David Lynch did a fantastic realization of the book. I've droned on and on and on about it in these forums so I wont do it again... but I do like it.
(P.S... I thought the mini-series sucked. )

Just finished "Dune Messiah" was great! Started Children of Dune. I have read mixed reviews about the new books. The Butlerian jihad I would expect it to be violent. It is the great crusade after all lol.
I guess I will find out what they are like when I get that far. Maybe you should finish reading them seeing as the two latest books "Hunters of Dune" and "Sandworms of Dune" (out end of this August) follow directly after the end of "Chapter House Dune" and they used most of what Frank Herbert had already written for the final book. But he had always intended to write prequels, guess his son wanted to do it the other way around. They cant be that bad if he has managed to write 9 books.
Cant remember much about the mini series but I do remember not liking Duke Leto, he was just nothing like he was in the book at all.

Just a thought here and its kind of a roll over from the Novels of DUne subject here. What if there was a small series of novels of Tron. Kind of like each novel would be before or after the movie & game? I was just thinking of that when I was reading your comments about the Dune Laphtiya.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

It could work. I mean why wouldnt it? All you need is a good plot background and dynamic characters to make it work. You could start with the Birth of Encom and the MCP right up to the game and beyond.
So for example like I said book one could be the start of Encom.
Second could be Flynn working at Encom and ending with his removal from the company and the MCPs rise to power within the system.
Third book could be a retelling of the movie itself but padding it out more following the characters in events outside of what we saw in the movie. Including maybe somethings that were left out of the movie because of the lack of technology or something.
Fourth Book could be about how they came up with Ma3a, but you would have to put in something exciting to happen because we dont want a flat tasteless programming book.
Next we could have the game
And then what ever your imagination can come up with.
Back to Dune for a second. I was reading the message boards from the Official Dune site and there currently are talks in buying the rights to the Dune TV series and the Movie. They plan on firstly making a new Dune movie based on a more accurate retelling of the first book. And after the movie they plan on producing a new set of Mini series ignoring the two that are currently done. So basically they want to turn the first book into a movie then follow up with a short TV show of each book.
Hopefully it will be better than what has already been done. I mean the TV show was good but it could have been better done still. With Dune they never seem to get the characters right. I mean the TV show, showed us an arrogant Paul Atreides right from the start. But he wasnt like that at all in the book. It annoys me how they take a book which has been successful for many years and change it because they believe that they can either improve it or want to make it appeal to a wider audiance. Like what they did with "War of the Worlds" took a book thats worked for over 100 years and decided they could make it better or more appealing. Because lets face it a book thats been popular for 100 years musnt be that good for Hollywood and what did we get? a movie that kinda flopped but wowed people with special effects.
I hope if they do manage to get the rights that they do not over kill Dune with over the top Special effects. And I hope they can still call the Barron the "Floating Fat Man" probably not if political correctness decide that it might offend REAL floating fat men.

Wow, was I completely off base with this assessment. I am reading Heretics Of Dune right now and loving it. All new characters and a story told mostly from the Bene Gesserit point of view.
I think my problem last time was I did the first four in a row. When I picked up five I was burnt out.
Too much of a good thing is still too much. Awesome book though, and I'm glad I went back and read it.

I love Dune...it has to be one of my favorite books.
I really don't think I liked the next two after that...erm...I gave up halfway through God Emperor (which I should probably try re-reading, because it sounds really awesome), and gave up with the newer series.
Sure, House Harkhonen was pretty neat. I just have heard about all the differences with the actual history that it was like Harkhonen fanfiction or something. I liked the views and stuff anyway...it was rather interesting.
House Atreties was erm...boring. I dunno why...maybe it's just because I'm not such a big fan of the Atreties [except Duncan Idaho].....
but yeah, the first Dune was awesome.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion
