Stewie Vs. Gene Kelly

on Monday, July, 16, 2007 12:00 AM
I saw this on Family Guy a couple of weeks ago and I just now researched to see what the original footage was from. It's from a 1945 movie called, "Anchors Aweigh" and features Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra and - of all cartoon characters - "Jerry Mouse" from Tom and Jerry.

...and yes, Jerry talks in this movie.

Here is the original footage from "Anchors Aweigh":

And here is the Family Guy clip with Stewie and Gene Kelly:

One thing I like to point out is how green the background is in the original footage. Compare it with the Family Guy video and you can see how some of these old films (before restoration, mind) were in real disrepair.

EDIT: Here's a quick bit of triva from IMDB:

When the dance sequence with Gene Kelly and Jerry the Mouse was screened for MGM executives, someone noticed that although Kelly's reflection shone on the floor during his dancing, Jerry's did not. So all the animators who worked on the sequence had to be rehired to go back in and draw Jerry's reflection on the floor as he was dancing.

Man, that's a lot of work.

I have found it funny how Family Guy, more than any other animated series pays homage to previous entertainment legends.... not to poke fun... but to take the time and effort to animate something like this (and like the Tron sequence)

Man...no one can dance like Gene Kelly.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

That's a very good point. Family Guy's audience (I think) is mostly guys of college age, and many of us 30-somethings (and 40-somethings too). I get the occasional 70's gags and wonder if the younger folks do. At the same time, I don't get some of the humor because I don't keep up with current pop-culture so much (films, tv, etc.).

It is interesting and very cool that Family Guy put together some very well done sequences, like the Gene Kelly bit, that pay homage to a time long before most of us. I remember seeing that Gene Kelly movie as a kid (rerun on TV of course). He was dancing with Porky Pig - who's reflection on the floor can still be seen! That's not Stewie's reflection. Great film sequence and Family Guy did it well too.

I love how they go all-out on these parodies and homages. The subtle things and all that make them work so well. The Ah Ha Take on Me sequence and the Wham Jitterbug sequence (that seemed parodied shot for shot to the 80's music video) all great examples of the care they take with this kind of thing.

Now I'm just wondering...

Who wants chauw-dah?
