Hello,
Well I now have that new PC I was after here:
http://www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?do=top&id=350278
I got a Gateway with the Core 2 Duo to use with POV-Ray and I'm now trying my best to get some time to play with POV-Ray again. I started updating the look of my logo...
And I went to animate it on the new PC last night and I ran into some problems. It seems Vista won't let me edit the POV-Ray INI files that I need to edit to make an animation. I posted full details here:
http://news.povray.org/povray.windows/thread/%3Cweb.462601924b1ad72e11d42ae90%40news.povray.org%3E/
But I really don't think this is a POV-Ray problem so I'm not sure I'm going to get an answer there. Anyone here using Vista? And yes... I know you guys warned me.
Help...
Carl

Okay it is more than likely a Vista issue. Vista doesnt like people messing around with files. So to protect itself even though your account may be an administrator account on windows Vista. You MUST specify that you want to run a program as administrator to have the admin rights.
This goes for games too, if I want to play Battlefield 2142 with punk buster enabled I must play the game as an administrator. Same with MMORPGs where updates will change the files and stuff. Its annoying yes but it means you cant (or should mean) accidently edit files that could mess up windows.
Basically what you will need to do is try running notepad as administrator and then edit your file. Stupid I know but hey you get used to it. If it keeps doing it try the simple save it as a new file delete the old one and then rename your file. But it just sounds to me like an administrator issue which is common in windows vista. My advice is to run all programs as administrator, it eliminates the majority of issues people have been complaining about. Hope this helps.
P.S. Vista isnt that bad, once you get used to it you'll prefer it. Except for the new office LOLorder abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Ok... how do I tell notepad or any program for that mater that I'm running it as an administrator? Currently I just point and click.

usually you just right click on the icon for the program and there should be a tab saying "Run as administrator" if not look under the properties tag and it should be there. Sorry I should have said that in the post before.

Well I've opened notepad as an adminstrator and it now does let me edit and save that INI file. However POV-Ray still isn't letting me make an animation. I've posted more details in the POV-Ray forums so check the link above if you like.
Thanks for all the help so far... I am making headway,

I told you not to use Vista! Hehehe.
Sorry, I can't really help you this time. I'm purposely staying away from Vista, and have yet to use it. And I prefer to know what I'm talking about, from experience.
I'm sure the people in the POV-Ray forum will help you through the growing pains of using Vista.
The only thing I can suggest, off the top of my head, is to right click the shortcut in the Start menu for POV-Ray and choose Properties, then look for a checkbox called "Run as administrator" or similar, and put a checkmark in it. Vista defaults to users and programs not having administrative priviliges, and many programs will choke without them.
P.S. I know laphtiya told you to do this for Notepad already, but I'm suggesting you do it for POV-Ray itself. And you want to put the checkmark in the box so that POV-Ray will always start with administration privileges, rather than having to right click and choose "Run as administrator" every time.

Yes... I know you warned me about Vista. And before I even saw this post I tried running POV-Ray using the right check and choosing "Run as administrator" method. No luck... if I'm using any animation settings it still just gives me the "Not Responding" message. It does however make individual still images just fine.
Also thanks for the tip about changing the properties for the shortcut. I didn't know about that before.
If I don't get any better ideas before tonight I'll propably uninstall POV-Ray and re-install it again. I don't know if that will help but I'm not sure what else to try at the moment.

Is this the first time you're running the game? Or did you have it running in XP before?
It's probably not Vista's fault. Do you get Aero Glass? (All the fancy shiny and transparent windows, and 3-D stuff?) If Aero Glass doesn't work, then that's likely why Tron 2.0 doesn't work either.

I still can't make animations on my home PC with Vista. However my PC at work (which I probably shouldn't be using for this... shhhh...) still has XP. So I let it render over night last night and I got this:
Just playing around and trying to keep my POV-Ray skills fresh as I hope to play around with my TRON models again soon.

I finally got POV-Ray to work with Vista. The fix was to go to the "Properties" screen and under the "Compatibility" tab, mark the checkbox for "Disable visual themes". It was Eudy Silva over on the POV-Ray forums that told me of the solution. I don't have a clue what exactly the "Disable visual themes" option does or why its needed in this case but it works so I'm back in business. If anyone here knows more feel free to educate me.

Hmm . . . it's a little weird that that option would be the cause of your difficulty. Not one of the first things to come to mind as a possible cause of the trouble, that's for sure.
I guess that since POV-Ray is still not Vista-aware, when it draws/renders the window and Glass is turned on (visual themes) something goes wrong and it gets stuck trying to redraw parts of the window.
Turning off Visual themes means going back to the bland, basic, way of drawing windows.

It's certainly something I wouldn't have figured out on my own.

By "Glass" do you mean the translucent boarders the Vista windows have? If so then the "Disable visual themes" option doesn't seem to turn that off as my POV-Ray windows still have the effect? If you mean something else keep in mind I'm still very green when it comes to Vista. I've seen adds that show windows being flipped like pages in a book but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I'm sure there are dozens of others features I don't have a clue about yet.
