How do I use proxy servers to be undected online?

I was looking into using a proxy when I surf online.
Iam not trying to hack or break into systems. here. But I'd rather no one know what I research etc.
But the funny thing is my IP that shows up now has a different city and address than where I REALLY live. which is weird..
Do any of you know were I can get a good proxy for free? and can you let me know how they work?
