On BBC Radio 4, since 1942, a programme has been running called 'Desert Island Discs'. On it, the guests must imagine that they are castaways on a desert island, and must choose eight pieces of music, a record, a book (excluding religious books and the full works of William Shakespeare, which are, for some reason, already on the island), and an item of luxury, and specify why they were chosen. People like Benny Hill, Billy Connolly, Stephen Hawking, Paul McCartney and George Clooney have appeared on it, and the last five UK Prime Ministers have also all been guests.
So, what would you choose, if you happened to be a castaway on a desert island? What songs would you listen to, in between pushing a button on a computer in an electromagnetic hatch every 108 minutes?

Wow... Good topic! Made me do some soul searching... but here is what I came up with:
Music
1) Rush: Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres
2) Ladytron: Destroy Everything You Touch
3) They Might Be Giants: Particle Man
4) Depeche Mode: World In My Eyes
5) The Police: Canary In A Coal Mine
6) Kraftwerk: Autobahn
7) Spyro Gyra: Freetime
8) David Bowie: Is There Life On Mars?
Record:
The Tron soundtrack LP.
Book:
The Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny Vols 1 & 2
Luxury Item:
A case of 18 year old Scotch.
Reasons:
Music: Stuff that is varied, but I can listen to over and over again.
Record: The Tron album is the perfect soundtrack IMHO and reminds me of so much. If I were stranded and had to listen to something that would give me hope and keep me going it would be the Tron soundtrack.
Book: This was a toss up between Lord Of The Rings and the Amber Chronicles… and well…
Luxury Item: I bet I can make fire eventually… but nothing holds a candle (literally) to 18 year old scotch.

Here's what I'd pick:
Jimi Hendrix - Hey JoeThis is one of the first songs I learnt to play on guitar when I started to play, years ago. I've always admired Hendrix's smooth, blues style of playing, and I adopted the nickname 'Jimi' (my name is James) years ago in honour of him (and people still call me Jimi now).
Steely Dan - PegI'm a huge Steely Dan fan, and Peg is the first Dan song I ever heard. I find myself unable not to sing along to it . It always reminds me of summer (probably because that's when I first heard it), and it always makes me feel good.
Michael Jackson - Off the WallI'm very Off the Wall myself - one of the reasons why I like Michael Jackson, which is something that many of my friends find damn embarassing (whenever somebody makes a comment about him, I have to remind them that he was acquitted) . The song is pop, jazz, funk and ethereal, and has a brilliant chorus.
Van Halen - UnchainedFrom Fair Warning - their heavier, less mainstream album. Unchained has a big opening riff and a huge chorus, which again I can't not sing along to .
Whew... four so far... this is hard!
Steely Dan - Doctor WuAnother Dan song, this time from the album Katy Lied. This is one of Steely Dan's more sophisticated, smooth pieces of jazz. And like all Steely Dan songs, the lyrics make absolutely bugger-all sense to me whatsoever .
a-ha - The Sun Always Shines on TVAfter their success with Take on Me, a-ha released this song, which didn't fare so well in the US, but reached #1 in the UK. It begins like a power ballad, and escalates into a rock anthem with a powerful chorus.
Alice in Chains - Would? From the same band that wrote the song 'No Excuses' (sound familiar?) - 'Would?' is a great example of Alice in Chains' work, combining the forces of Layne Staley's layered vocal work and Jerry Cantrell's awesome guitar.
Michael Jackson - Smooth CriminalIf only the bass line was there and the rest of the track wasn't recorded, this song would still be awesome.
Record - Can't Buy a Thrill - Steely Dan
Book - all five books of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Luxury - an acoustic guitar with an infinite supply of strings and a tuner.
