Snow on a cactus?! Wow. And I thought the weather here was weird. I'm in Utah, and we normally have like maybe a teensy _smidge_ of snow each winter. This year, however, we had some actual inches, multiple snowfalls and (gasp!) a white Christmas! That hasn't happened since...I don't know...at least 2000? Not in my town, anyway.

We have some snow now...it's not new, but it's been cold enough to where it doesn't melt, either. This place isn't _quite_ a desert, but it's hot and dry enough to where this is pretty rare.

Oh, yeah, Utah weather is Teh Weird. *nods* Don't tell me, I'll tell you. And what do you think of this inversion, huh? *'s* Tell me, why is it that the inversion comes in at the same time as the Sundance Film Festival?

Oh, and yeah, Utah is a desert; it's just more noticable in Southern Utah than Northern Utah. We may have 'The Greatest Snow on Earth!', but we're also the second driest state, after Nevada. Go fig.

In Portland..we're not used to snow.

So, therefore, people don't know how to drive.

But, then again, people don't seem to know how to drive in the rain, either. And there's no excuse for that.

I read somewhere that Utah is technically a "semi-arid zone"--the next step up from desert. But I'm perfectly willing to believe it's a desert. In my town, the air is dry enough for a large enough portion of the year that I just always have to have Chapstick around, or else my lips might sometimes bleed. It's that bad.

I've never been to the Sundance Film Festival but I'd like to. I know people who go every year, but I haven't yet...

As for heat, the only air conditioning we have in my dwelling is a swamp cooler that barely works, and breaks down like _clockwork_ EVERY...SINGLE...SUMMER. Even though we've had it repaired so many times that by this point you'd think it'd be made of nothing but new parts! Anyway, my room is in the opposite end of the house from where the swamp cooler is and even when I've had my door open all day and we've had it running at the highest setting all day, sometimes it gets so hot in here...
How hot? Well, last summer my poor computer went around constantly _shutting down_ due to the heat! It was like I don't know how many degrees inside the case. I feel seriously sorry for my programs. :P With the addition of _two_ new fans, my computer was able to function last summer. Barely.

So, that's weather in Utah for ya! Ha ha! Still, I'd rather live here than Iowa. I still remember the winter when we had a _90_ below temperature, due to the wind chill factor...

...Notorious

Yup. We call them "Prickly Pear" in English, but I prefer the Spanish word for them, to be honest.

On a sad note.. a lot of these cacti actually died because of this snow. A day after I took this picture they were all laying flat from frost damage

I grew up with a swamp cooler and it's funny... you actually have to explain them to people who don't live in a desert. The concept is COMPLETELY foreign to people who live in humid areas because they are basically not functional there.

In my house, now, I have air conditioning. And to be honest... there is no way in hell I would ever go back to a swamp cooler. Plus, they waste water. Not so good in a desert

Well, yeah, but you see, I live in an old trailer that was made in 1970. Yeah. Really. We have that fake-wood panelling on the walls and actual shag carpeting in some rooms. It barely holds together and functions at all...anyway, it already has a swamp-cooler but we're not sure if it's even set up to..._take_ a normal air conditioner. There might not be any good place to install it/the walls might not be strong enough, if it's heavy. Most of the trailers around here have swamp coolers instead of air conditioners, actually. They all come like that.
Also, I'll bet a normal air conditioner is ex-PEN-sive...

Anyway, we'd upgrade if we could, is what I'm sayin', but at the moment I don't think it'd be too feasible. (shrug)

Ditto that. Also a ginormous thing of lotion. *nods*

I've never gone either. It seems like a really nice excuse to go to Park City and escape the inversion, though. Oh, and go star-watching, of course.

Ah, the swamp cooler... Ours kept breaking last summer as well; the pump would give out, so we would get hot air instead of nice, wet, cool air. *dies* Unfortunately, getting central air isn't really in the cards at the moment, so I'm stuck with the swampy. *le sigh*

90 below? Gads, that's just screwed up on so many levels. *shivers at the very thought*

Oh, I could do a nice long rant about how I think "global warming" is a crock, but I won't. Because I am a considerate individual and don't want this thread to disolve into a flame-war.

I shall, however, point farther up the thread to the pictures of snow on a cactus.

Global warming. Yeah.

I'm assuming (but not sure) you're referring to the Kyoto Protocol.

Australia has flatly refused to ratify the agreement. Germany has exempted it's coal production from the agreement.

Now... don't get me wrong. I actually agree with the Protocol and the problem with Greenhouse gases. However, don't blame it all on China and the US. This is a worldwide problem. Spain has had a 25% increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the past 14 years.
