I'm surprised I managed to write anything coherent. I was really tired when I wrote the review. But I was determined to be the first to have a review on the web. And sure enough, this time another review was posted very quickly. Still, I can claim to have the first.
I was pleased to see the review mentioned on the SLG blog. Woohoo! Just too bad she (I take it Jennifer) highlighted the most simple and bland parts of the review, I was hoping to see some more insightful passages quoted. Oh well, I'm still delighted at the mention.
One more little thing I wanted to mention about the comic. Maybe it's just because they were in the distance, but the Recognizers at the end were drawn in a rather simplistic way. I'm going to chalk it up to being in the distance.

Yeah, I just don't get it. For example: thousands of copies of the Tron comic are being sold, yet few people seem to have anything to say. The address for Tron-Sector is there in the back of each issue. What gives?

I had some setbacks the past week which has made it hard to get my copy. I hope to be able to go out and get my copy this weekend! I always look forward to getting the comic and enjoy reading them. Maybe some people just aren't taking the time to register to Tron-Sector and are just being casual observers of the site.

Seems like it for the younger generation after Generation X. If there was a movie or game like you had mentioned. They would be all over the table with it. Seems rather odd that even with the comic book already have way there of the 6 issues so to be produced. That there would be more people coming here even if it was to say hi and mentioned that they got the comic book you know. I can only imagine that the younger generation are not like us who have seen the movie in the original 70 MM format and collected some things already of tron through ebay or made things that were tron related even fan based animation or other.
LurkingHoros I do not mean to pry into the sales figures and all that. I honestly will respect that if you said no as well. Does it or will there be an extension to the comic book line in the forseable future? After the 6 are releasd? I just wanted to get your input on this. So far I like the overal workmaship of the tron 2.0 comic and all that, the ideas that both you and the others have put a lot of work into it. Which I can only give high praise for it.

I was equally shocked back when I was in charge. I should say I was flabbergasted by the low market interest and low pre-orders.
I love SLG and I think they're doing a fine job, I don't blame the fans either. I think that Tron is a strange beast, its the last of its kind and no one really knows how to properly feed it.

Just about all the other Disney properties that have successful merchandise lines, are successful because they have a recent film or TV show. Media exposure. If Disney had filmed a Tron sequel first and then released products, you can bet those products would have been a lot more successful.
I'm betting there are still a significant number of casual fans who are completely clueless about the fact that games and comics have been released. Disney is not marketing Tron whatsoever. The closest they came to a big push on Tron, was the 20th Anniversary DVD release.
A little off-topic, I know. Sorry.

Tron is a strange beast, its the last of its kind and no one seems to know how to properly take care of it.
I think SLG is doing the best they can so Im not slaming them in any way. They've succeeded where I failed.
Remember that Tron was not a financial success back in 82, it made a zilion computer geeks smile in awe, but the movie failed at the box office, regardless of the reasons. The only thing that worked for Tron is the arcade game.
I would love a Tron sequel, but then again there's 99% chances it would suck for being too far removed from the original material. Just look at Tron 2.0, is there anybody who genuinely likes the storyline ? We love the game because it looks like the movie, but most Tron fans wishes in secret that the storyline were more connected to what we want. Less real-world drama and more electronic world action. The simplicity of the movie has been lost in Tron 2.0 with complex corporate machinations.
Its kinda like Transformers, most Transfans want more robot action-stories and less puny-humans interactions.
Don't get me wrong, I watch the movie many times a year still to this day. Like many others movies from the 80s it brings me a sense of confort, peace and satisfaction that new movies just can't deliver.
But as far as Tron 2.0. and re-inventing what was perfect the first time... I'll quote DeNiro in Casino : "Why change a good thing"
Cheers

Yeah, Clavet has a point there. Knowing Disney, they wouldn't be able to conjure a storyline that is more interesting than the original movie.
On the other hand, it would be interesting to see how they portray it. Disney has done some pretty good remakes of old movies. Who knows? It might just put back on the map.

I have to confess...I haven't read the comic yet myself (hides). But in my case it's not to do with being a younger than Generation-X fan...I was alive when the movie came out. (I didn't SEE it until ten years later, but I existed in the universe.) It's simply because I don't buy many comics in general. Now, for something special like this, _sure_, but because I don't buy many comics, I haven't been to the comic store near me in a LONG time. So that's why I didn't know about it.
...until I came to this site...
As for why it took me so long to get here, well, I tend to have things that I love _in general_ forever once I know them, but my periods of actual enthusiasm (to where I want to talk to other fans, draw artwork, look up everything I can find related to the subject, etc.) come and go, so I just recently got back into FANNISH Tron fandom again. That's why I didn't see this place until now. I totally would've loved it had I known about it earlier, though. :P
But you want to know another reason why, perhaps, a fan-made game or video would be more popular? Not just because it uses newer technology...no. Because since it's online, it's more _easily available_. On-line usually doesn't require money--which is something I definitely DON'T have right now--and you can get it by sitting at your computer desk. That's why. Really, the main reason that's keeping me from getting the comic at the moment is lack of fundage. But if somebody made something that I could look at by simply clicking a link, why, then, I probably would. (shrug)

Disney never knew how to properly market Tron, they didn't know then and they don't know now. They'll just sit on it until Kingdom Come.
Maybe they'll do a 50 year special when everybody who seen it in theatres is dead.
I'll quote the band Jesus & Mary Chain : "Oh and it's plain to see that it's dead. The thing swims in blood and it's cold stoney dead"

You should share your theory. I'm curious to see how close you are.
TronFAQ Wrote isney has an opportunity with the comic to cross-promote other Tron products, by placing an ad in the comic. They could have a one-page ad on the back cover or something, for the Disney Store: where they could highlight all the Tron products available. The DVD, CD, Games, Statues, Pins, etc. But do they do it? No. They don't have a clue on how to market it properly. I guess they just don't care. |
I have to clarify, Disney really doesn't have a say on the advertising in the back. That would be a call made by SLG.
TronFAQ Wrote:And why isn't the comic sold in the Disney Store? Duh! |
That's all Disney. Note that Disney doesn't sell Disney Adventures magazine either. But you have to remember, just because the name is Disney, doesn't mean they're the same company.
I can tell you that if we had somehow managed an agreement that would get the book cross promoted with other Disney companies, we would probably have a much harder time doing anything with the book that was not identical to the film.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

But I'm betting no one from Disney even asked or offered to place an ad. Is that correct? That's my point.

If selling the comic in the store meant compromising the content, because they're afraid that an adult-aimed comic book sold on their site might distress parent groups and the like: then of course, forget it.
Maybe I'm just naive, but you would think that a conglomerate like Disney with its multiple divisions, would try to function like a well-oiled machine and fire on all cylinders. That all the divisions would be in lockstep with each other, and do their best to cooperate and cross-promote their properties. However, this apparently is not the case at all. I recall some posts about how when the game was released, the other divisions of Disney made zero attempts to help cross-promote. (e.g. Showing an ad in front of a Disney film in the theater.) And now they are repeating the same mistake.
Why? Just because it's Tron, and not say . . . Kim Possible? There's a bias at Disney against this property. Which is foolish. Exploit it, don't let it fade away.

As I've maintained before... Tron will not become part of the Disney Marketing Family until a group discovers it and starts buying a bunch of merchandise (like Nightmare Before Christmas). Do you REALLY want that happening to Tron?

Why not? Succesful products would mean more Tron. And better marketing would help that, significantly. Being successful doesn't automatically mean a property will be destroyed in the process.
But yes . . . with Disney's track record so far, they probably would pander to the largest demographic: the integrity and vision of Tron be damned.
Lurkinghorror, I've asked a couple of friends who have recently picked up the comic, to share their thoughts on it. Hopefully they will post.

My theory:
It is real and it is not real.
Mercury's appearance changed so dramatically I had to blink several times. So, this is probably not Mercury as we know her. As for MCP's revival? Seems suspicious (but highly possible if that bloatware managed a back-up copy of himself.)
Currently, the war might be in Jet's mind and Jet could be out cold elsewhere in the real Tron World. Also, there's the problem of two Jets. Where is the second Jet? Wasn't he shown commandering an army? He hasn't shown up at all ever since the original Jet entered the digital world.
I might be off track here. XP
