Final Fantasy XII

on Wednesday, January, 10, 2007 11:33 AM
Is anyone playing this yet? I picked it up (after having skipped FFXI) and I am enjoying it immensely. I like the way they redid the battle system to not have the monsters random anymore and phase into “battle mode”. You can now choose to avoid encounters. This was done probably to get more into the MMORPG feel and less of the old single PRG style.

The “license” system is a bit odd, in that you have to acquire the ability to use weapons you already purchased. Also, you have to actually BUY magic, in addition to supplies and weapons, and gil does not seem to be overly plentiful in this game. That takes a little getting used to.

One thing I loved about FFX was the ability to switch members in and out during battle. This ensured that everyone got a chance at experience points. It seems to be missing from XII.

The game is a lot less linear than X, being that there are side quests and hunts you can do. Also you can backtrack and explore areas that you have in the past.

The soundtrack is phenomenal and adds a lot to the game. It’s something I can listen to over and over again outside the game.

All in all a good Final Fantasy send-off for the PS2.

it's not out in the UK yet [23rd February ] but when it is, this is definately one for my list.

i was a bit of a late starter to final fantasy, coming in at FFX, but i love that and i'm sure i'll love XII as well.

either way, it's good to know what someone else thinks about something, both positive and negative.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Bweh. I seriously need to get this game. (And, er, actually finish FFX. Yeah.) I've heard loads of good things about XII, so I'm looking forward to picking it up once I can afford it. *is a poor college student* And I need to get FFIV, and VI when it comes out, but that's beside the point.

So, wait, they removed the battle switching? Rats, I liked that feature! Made the battles so much easier. Of course, I also like the system in I, II, and V, where your group of characters is small enough that you don't have to switch around, but that's just me.

So, would you say that XII is harder or easier, on the whole, than X? X gave me some major stress (and still does. Darn hard-to-complete ultimate weapons... *mutters*), so I was just curious as to how this newest installment stacks up.

You know, somehow I didn't expect to find a FF thread here, and I'm very pleased that there is one. Goes to show, doesn't it?

Unless I am missing something. That could be, because I have not read the instruction manual. You can switch out party members to your heart's content, but not during battle. I liked that in FFX because then everyone who at least made ONE attack got ALL the experience points, ensuring everyone leveled up together.

So, would you say that XII is harder or easier, on the whole, than X?

Well, I am only about 7 hours into it, so I have not hit any hard bosses yet. The tactics are very different in battle though, being that everyone can run around and the targets change. You can "tank" someone and then have them the primary focus of the monster while everyone else hangs back and takes pot shots. Of course, I did waste a couple of Phoenix Downs on a monster last night.... so I need to really work on my tactics as opposed to just brute force. The first time I thought FFX was hard was the battle with Seymour on Mt. Gagazet (or whatever it was called).

There’s also a lot more other things to do in FFXII other than the main story. FFX was very linear, but XII lets you explore and complete a lot of side quests and hunts as well. I like that. And no Blitzball, thank God

You'll find most Tron fans love video games so there is a lot of discussion about games and gaming systems on this board.

Yeah, that was tricky. I'm just glad I discovered the "Aeon Overdrive Bombardment of Doom" method before I got to that point, or I would have been many kinds of dead.

And no Blitzball, thank God

Woo! I hate Blitzball! I love sidequests and extra stuff, but not when it's as incredibly obnoxious as Blitzball turned out to be.

And for this, I am glad.

I actually just FINISHED XII the other night... So I'll throw my 2 cents in..

On the note about in-battle switching... It CAN be done, by hitting the Triangle button and swapping members... HOWEVER, you can't swap someone out of the battle, who's currently being targeted by a monster.. (Easy way to tell.. If their name is RED, they're a target and can't be swapped.. If their name is white, they're fine)

I really enjoyed this game.. The new "no-random-encounters" battle system rocks, the graphics/music are incredible, (which is par for the course, for FF games), and the characters rock...

My only complaint, (and it's minor), is that it doesn't have the same "We gotta go save the world" intensity that some of the previous FF games had... Doesn't have quite the same eh... I dunno... "Epic" feel to it... Although there are a few twists towards the end that kinda help with that, and give it a broader perspective... I won't spoil anything though..

As others have said, nice to see other fans! I've been playing FF since #1, waaaaaay back on the original NES... I would say IV is my all-time favorite though.. (Released as II here in the US, on the SNES)

One thing I personally noted: This one IS harder than X... Which I WELCOMED... Having played through the series from the beginning, the recent titles had left me wanting in the difficulty department... The battle with Seymour on Gagazet was the hardest battle in X, and it really wasn't THAT bad compared to some of the bosses back in the old games... So I was glad to see they brought the difficulty up a notch... And related to that, they brought back some of the BEST music from the old games... I just about had a heart attack when I first turned it on and heard the old title music from the old games... Awesome to the 12th degree
(On the flip side, I just about soiled myself when I discovered they brought back one of the bosses from IV that I absolutely feared/loathed... Demon Walls SUCK!! lol)

LMAO!!

Is your friend a teenaged girl? If so, then they would probably say so. Otherwise, I would tend to disagree.

X-2 WAS a good game, don't get me wrong.. It tied up the story from X, and put the spotlight more on Yuna instead of Tidus... But you only played as the same 3 characters for the entire game, and they seemed more like Charlies Angels wannabes than anything...

I would say that if you're a fan of X, you should play all the way through X-2 at least once, so you can get some closure on the story... If you're not a fan of X, you're not missing anything. order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

It's funny because I was thinking that this is the first time in a FF story that I am actually following what's going on. Sometimes their stories can be a little... cryptic, and some things lost in the translation, but so far I am following everything.

I think the story is quite epic. A country taken over by an Empire who promises peace, but there is a definite menace in their occupation that you know is going to go sour at some point.

Thanks for the tip, BTW about switching out party members.... I'll try that when I get some tonight.

Also.... how hot is Fran? Mrrrrroowwww! Not sure how she runs over sand in stiletto heels though

The only ones I played are FFVII and FFVIII because they were released on the PC. Great games and I wished Square would port more FF games.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Most FF games are RPG in style, so you're dealing with tactics mostly. You have to figure out what combination of magic, skills and attacks will overcome the monster. You spend a lot of time configuring your character, and leveling up.

Kingdom Hearts, whereas there was some of that, is still very much a button mashing platformer at heart. Not to say that isn't good, but it's different from a real RPG.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think the story rocks.. And yes, the cutscenes from the other characters (empire) help to keep the story right up front, so it makes sense...
What I meant by the "epic" thing, was that in almost all of the previous FF games, you weren't just trying to stop an evil empire from invading... You were trying to LITERALLY save the entire planet from some huge, evil, destructive force... So by comparison, this one didn't seem quite as... intense? Not sure exactly what the right descriptive word would be there...

As for FFX-2... Yes, Yuna and Rikku are hot... Which leads to TONS of debates on FF forums about who the game was ACTUALLY marketed towards....

The Charlies Angels / Girl Power attitudes & theme in the game, make you think it was Square's attempt at pulling teenaged girls into the RPG realm.... On the other hand, your characters are running around in VERY skimpy outfits, and even have a conversation about their um... bosoms... at one point... So maybe it was marketed at horny, teenaged boys? LOL Who knows, really?

Anyhow, like I said earlier, X-2 isn't really a bad game... I just coulda done without the whole perky girl power attitude thing... Made it kinda cheesy... where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

It's for horny teenaged boys. *nods sagely* I mean, seriously. They had it be "Grrl Power, women pwn all!" so that the sisters/mothers/girlfriends/etc of said boys wouldn't get their knickers in a twist over it.

Thusly:

"Hey, you're just playing that to ogle the girls in skimpy clothes! ZOMG sexist!"

"No, look! They're empowered, independent females who are going out to save the world! I'm admiring them for their skills and attitude!"

"Oh, okay then."

*cough* Snark, anyone?

Okay, and, um, there's a conversation about teh girl bits? *'d* Yeah, I'm seriously never buying that game now. That knowledge has solidified my opinion. (Besides, that really should have come up in X. Lulu was friggin' falling out of her dress the whole time; you would think that someone would have said something about it.)

Ahem. ^^

And about the 'getting girls into RPGs' thing? I got into FF because of the wonderfully entertaining (and quotable) violence of Black Mage, 8-bit Theater's homicidal social-defect. Had I been presented with Grrl Power stuff? Yeah, not a chance. I'd get as many systems away from that as possible, thanks.

Of course, that's just me.

Oh, and on a different note, does anyone know when VI Advance is coming out in the States? I haven't been able to find a definitive date anywhere.
