I will try that. Right now, I bumped my WinXP computer screens resolution down to 800 x 600 and used windowed mode, double-size. Seems to fill it up pretty good.
Now I can't figure out how to make the keyboard do anything. I had used CCS64 before VICE, so I'm just learning. CCS64 had some awful sound issues that VICE doesn't seem to have.on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill online

To config the keyboard, you'll have to go to the Settings/Joystick settings.... The config for it does suck a little but if you get a game pad sometime, then it's really worth using in Vice...
Here is a little help about Joystick ports....
If you remember that some games will only use Player 2 port and some others would use Player 1 port... Depending on the game... This is how you can switch ports with ease....
Goto, Options/swap Joysticks.... or press Alt+J... that way you don't have to reconfig everything...
again... remember to save your setting in the Settings/save current settings... otherwise you will have to reconfig it all over again...
I've got lots of roms, but I'm wanting every game I can get... There was a torrent that was like 4 gig that I wanted but no one would seed, so if you come across a single download that has tons of games, let me know....
There is also a way to transfer those games to a 5.25" disk and play them on your C64... but I'm not sure how to do it yet... plus I need a working disk drive to do so for both my PC and the C64...

Should probably only get the games already owned. Thanks for all the C64 and emu tips. C64 games are a blast from the past, for sure! Very cool

NP...
Anything to help you kick-back when trying to fix your C64...
I find it funny... I built a $2,000 computer... and I use it for C64 emulation... lol... that and Amiga... (not just that ofcourse, but still).... lol
Once again, I'm no expert, but if you do run across issues I may be able to help out a little bit... and if not, then I hope to direct you to the right source...

I think you hit the nail on the head on that one Kia for the tv game converter. Where you hook it up through the coax cable. Usually Radio shack will have them if not them then you will have to find those specialty stores that radio shack would get them at. I have seen like maybe a couple over here that I know of. But I think they are mostly gone by now for those kind of conenction. Traahb do you want me to take a look up here and find out for you. Just for sake of it when I get a chance to go down to one?? |
Thanks for the offer, CompuCore, but we have Radio Shacks all over down here. I've heard a statistic where there's a Radio Shack within 5 miles of 90% of the population in the US, or something crazy like that. Serious. The statistic was that *whoa! are you serious??* eye-opening. There are definitely some classics there. Of the ones you listed, I loved Karataka, Test Drive, Archon II, Bruce Lee, Rambo, Impossible Mission, Winter Games, Aztech Challenge, Beach Head 2, Boulder Dash, Lode Runner, Conan, Ghost Busters, Space Taxi, Stealth, Tetris. I'm not sure I've played the others.
Others I loved back in the day:
The Last Ninja 1, 2 - I can't remember which one I liked better, but I remember being impressed. Was sometimes hard to pick up objects in the environment and to do jumping puzzles (a joystick would help), but I liked it You were a ninja running around in an oriental landscape environment; taking out other ninjas with your throwing stars and nunchakas (sp?)
Moebius - A very unique adventure game where you get placed on a map and you have to go do stuff. Not sure how to explain it. It looks lame at first, but if you delve into it, it's pretty interesting. I liked how it would sometimes rain, or I think get dark, too. Days would pass. Never played a game like that before. The fights were done in a style that is similar to Karateka.
Labyrinth - Adventure game by Lucasfilm , modeled after the movie w/ the same title. I think my main liking was b/c I liked the movie.
Rescue on Fractalus - Fly a spaceship around a Mars-like planet and rescue downed pilots. First game to use fractals, if I remember correctly.
The Pawn - Adventure game. Great graphics for the time. Text entry system to move and interact with the game. Static pictures used.
Amazon - Another adventure game with static pictures as the graphics. I guess I liked adventure games, lol. Text entry system to move and interact with the game.
Uridium - Fast action side-scrolling spaceship flying game where you shoot spaceships and stuff.
Parallax - I just added this one. Uridium reminded me. Another spaceship flying game that tests your reflexes.
Wizball - This one was fun to play with a friend. You control one thing (the main character?), your friend controls the other (an orb that flies around and protects you as well as collects stuff, maybe?). I can't remember, but it was fun coordinating efforts. I think you had to mix colors, or collect all of one color. Something to do with colors anyways.
7 Cities of Gold - Set sail from Europe and land at the New World. Exploration game. Establish new lands.
Defender of the Crown - OMG, totally cool for its time. I loved this game. Kind've like Risk, but not really. More interactive. Lay siege to castles, take over territories, go looting enemy castles, etc.
Forbidden Forest 1, 2 - If you've never played before, part 2 will be more palatable. I remember they marketed part 2 as being in "4-D". In part 1, it was side scrolling adventure where you shoot weird creatures, but there was no true feeling of depth on the screen. In part 2, the "4-D" aspect brought depth and better graphics.
Demon Stalkers - Similar to Gauntlet. Had a lot of fun playing this one with friends. It was a cooperative effort, but there was an element of competition to be the first one to explore new rooms, grab new keys, etc.
Spy vs Spy - Modeled after the MAD comicbook characters. This game was cool. Never played any other game like it. You would hide a briefcase of money somewhere and then plant traps real time as the enemy (your friend) searches for the briefcase. The enemy can disarm traps. I think if the enemy finds the briefcase, then they have to escape before you get to them.
Marble Madness - Guide a marble around a labyrinth of puzzles and mazes. Interesting.
Infiltrator - I'm not sure if I liked this very much on the C64; but I did like it on the Amiga 500.
Dino Eggs - You get teleported to historic times. You have to combine wood sticks to make fire, which hatches dinosaur eggs You then jump over the hatchlings to cage them; and then teleport to other

There are a bunch a great games on your list too. The ones that I'm not familure with, I'll check em out sometime.
One game that I'm playing for now is, 'Zak Mcracken: and the Alien Mind Blenders'. I use to play this game all time before I got an Amiga (which I played the A500 version of that too).
I'm also playing Karataka and Archon on a regular basis... Great games. I'm surprised no one ever made a sequal of Karataka. It was such a well written game and excellent use of C64 gfx.

It is the same thing up here and across canada as well. Very similar stats about Radio shack or the Source by circui city since it is replacing Radio shack up here for the stores. Its the thought that counts for it. You never know when you need that really specialty part you know.

Thanks for the descriptions. I read them all, and it did help on the ones that I didn't know about.
7 Cities Of Gold, and Heart Of Africa both were very entertaining games and ever educational. On 7 Cities of Gold, I use to set up came in the new world, leave about 50 to 100 men there with one days of rations... lol... I was relentless. I would try to still gold for the tribes or assinate their cheif... Then they would kill me before I had a chance to excape... lol...
PitStop and PitStop 2 rocked.... I also have played Archon II but had trouble getting use to the game. Now since you sparked my interest, I'm going to play it tonight when I get back from work...
I should spend some time giving descriptions to some on my list too sometime.

I have a free c64 Superman game if you want it. Since I don't have a c64, I may as well pass it on to someone else. I don't even know if the game works or not.
E-mail me your address again and I'll send it some time next week .

I used to be the same with my APPLE ][e clone over here too when I had it. I still have the original software over ehre. But the machine has long gone since then. Ihave only the 5.25 diskettes over here. With something like close to 100-200 game combined. I kind of understand what your feeling though with the C64.

Apple ][e's were great computers. I missed out on the Apple computers back in the 80's since my frist was a Commodore and it stole the spotlight from most home computers for a while back then. It wasn't till I got my Amiga 500 that someone gave me their Appe ][ and I had a chance to play around with it. I never owned a Mac but I had a friend that owned an early Mac and I liked it but I still favored my Amiga.
When the PC rage of 1995 took place, I had already pieced together a few 286 - 486s and wasn't impressed by any of them except for some of the games.... which compared to consoles, weren't very good (but some did become great classics). Then Doom was released and I made a switch.... so by 1995, I was impressed at how well the PC has grown and matured. From then on I became a hard core PC guy and had many jobs fixing home computers.
I was impressed by the internet as well. Before then, I spent all those late nights on BBS's reading posts from all the Commodore and Amiga users in my area. Downloading stuff was the slowest process ever... not only because of the very low connection speeds but also because there was no hard drive. everything when to a 5.25 or 3.25 disk (except I did get a HD for my Amiga latter on and it saved a crap load of time).
Oh.... the memories......

Okay, I finally had a chance to open the C64 again. This time I took the keyboard out (bunch of tiny screws holding it in) and cleaned everything as best I could. Plugged it back in and..... (drum roll)... *success!!* The keys now work as they should! Some of them don't register as well as they should (have to hit the space bar a couple times to get it to work, for instance... but the keyboard at least works now!
But, as you suspected, another problem reared its ugly head. I tried loading 5 different games, and none of them were recognized Each time I tried, the disk drive would look on the disk, but then give the generic error that it can't find anything on the disk. ARRRGH! So close, yet so far away. I hope it's the disk drive, and not the diskettes that have the problem. I know stored media isn't normally permanent, but these old games should still work in the year 2006, right? I've always been careful to keep them away from magnets. Okay, now does anyone have any advice on fixing the disk drive?
TheReelTodd - That's a very nice looking C64 set up there! Mine's not even anywhere close to being so pristine! Well done. I don't have a C64 monitor; the disk drive doesn't match the console, etc. Mine's just way ugly looking
PS: I saw the disk today, it's "Beyond the Forbidden Forest", not "Forbidden Forest 2," as I had mentioned above.
PPS: Nice story, Qix. Very cool. On my C64, I had a program service called "Q-Link", short for Quantum Link. I connected to this 'internet' style place, with my 300 baud modem (which I think we later got 600 or 900 baud) and downloaded midi music files and stuff. There were chat rooms, and BBS, etc. You're right... memories!!!

I remember those times too with the BBS's when I finally got my first XT over here in the early 90's Thats when i wenet into over drive on teh BBS's. Love those and the 1200 Baud modem that I had gotten for it. Still wish that part of my life would still be around. Not many newbies of todays generations understood our Generation when the Internet was still a very restricted beast for the select few groups who had access to it between the late 60 through the 70's When it was used as a back bone for special groups. The BBS did bring one thing to the net though that some of the newbies don't really know ofare the news groups that took off from it and became mainstream for the net. The good old days... The good old days.

Oh oh!
The last time my C64 actually worked, one of the games discs I had no longer worked. It was about 12 years ago or so. I believed that the magnetic data on the disc no longer was readable and the disc itself had failed. The drive still recognized my other discs. Perhaps it is possible to read the disc on another drive and then duplicate it. Of course, finding another functional drive may not be easy. Both my C64 and drive seem non-functional today. They light up and the drive spins, but nothing more. Perhaps some day I'll tinker with it and see if I can make it come alive for real again.

Thank you. The monitor is a vintage 80's monitor, BUT it was never actually hooked to my C64. That monitor was for my Apple //c. My C64 was always just hooked to a TV set. And I had to clean up my C64 and drive very hard before setting it up for the video shoot (and photos). I spent about an hour or more cleaning it. I did take very good care of it back in the day though. I always took good care of my stuff. Wish it still worked.
You got your keyboard thing resolved (mostly) - hope you're able to get the disc reading thing fixed too. Keep working at it!
