I read an article about this in the August 2006 issue of Popular Science. Here is the picture used in the article.
Very cool stuff... anyways at the end of the issue they showed a picture of the cover of the December 1936 issue which looked like this:
Where they state "The American design never made it past the drawing board, but the Germans had a similar concept rolling off the assembly line and onto the battlefield in 1941." After googleing for a hour or so this morning I couldn't find any info on the 1941 German version. Anyone here ever heard of something like this or better yet know where I could see a picture of the "German concept" mentioned above?

That's so cool! (pun intended for snow image  )
The snow image looks like a mix between a motorcycle and a snowmobile... only ALL track and no front skis.
I wonder if they're hard to control? There's probably a learning curve to riding them. I bet it's a lot of fun once you get the trick though.

Ah very nice! I dream of making this type of stuff... ok, three wheeless hubs, and tracks that can become turbinated, to cause the ship to hydroplane over a surface, while pulling air around the vehicle and balancing it over the terrain... oh yes.
