Barnard Hughes has passed away at age 90 after a brief illness.

Go here for the news story.

A sad day in the TRON world.

My condolences go out to his family.

Very sad news. He was my favorite actor, to play the kind grandfather or mentor role. Which he did in TRON, effortlessly.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Yeah sad news. I suppose the only thing you can class as a bright side is that he has had a good long run I mean 90 years old is a good age. Plus he's entertained thousands of people and given alot of people joy. So we shouldn't focus on the fact that he has died. We should focus on the good stuff he's done and the fact that because of people like us who love tron and everyone in it. He will live forever on our DVD players

Yes my fellow programs and users, this is indeed a sad day at the sector. I can't help but think of my favorite quote from Tron at this moment, it seems to carry some resonance

"All that is visible must grow beyond itself, and extend into the realm of the invisible. You may pass my friend."

Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes.

Your spirit remains in every one of the characters you've played and all the lives you've touched along the way.

Wow, very sad news. I'm bummed now... *sigh*

Thanks for sharing this information, DaveTRON.

He had one of my favorite quotes in the movie, too.

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

I'd think they'd mention that in the obituary, but they did manage to skip listing TRON as one of his films.

I really don't know Karl.

Just wanted to add my voice to those in mourning.

You know, I gotta admit to feeling a little bad about something:

Since my Tron "kick" just started a few days ago, I went & bought the 20th Anniversary DVD set. I watched the "Making of Tron" featurette. When I saw Barnard Hughes in it, my reaction was, "Wow. It's great to see he was/is still alive for this". I think he looked great considering how many years had passed since the release of Tron.

I then proceeded to check & make sure he was still alive by visiting imdb.com (the Internet Movie Database). Sure enough, it only listed his birthdate.

For this, I was happy. This was only a day or two before this announcement of his passing.

In some weird & twisted way, I feel like I may have sent some bad "juju" his way by researching the "dead or alive" factor. Of course, to be realistic, I'm sure it was just an unfortunate coincidence.

Oh, well. What better time to be nostalgic for Tron than now? Mr. Hughes will be missed.

Best wishes,
Jayce

I wasn't able to log on to the sector for last few days, and when I do... I get the sad news.

He was truly a classic actor. From a few interviews that I've seen of him, he seemed to be a really good hearted and kind man. Someone I respect very much.

Barnard Hughes will aways be in our memories. It's so sad to see him go.

Sorry I missed this.

Like Traahn and Captain Capacitor, I also think he had the best quote of the movie. He really was a great actor - not just in TRON, but in all his movies.

I offer my condolences to his family and friends.

MIchael Bonifer who did the book The Art of TRON sent me the following link to a writeup he did about the passing of Barnard Hughes.

Here's the writeup.

That was a much better tribute to Mr. Hughes than the "official" press release.

And if you read Mr. Bonifer's article, you'll find out that Barnard Hughes made a pretty incredible prediction. He saw the Signal-to-Noise ratio problem that would eventually come, thanks to the sudden prevalence of computers. (i.e. Worthwhile content vs. incomprehensible drivel.)
