YouTube video blogging with a twist

on Saturday, June, 03, 2006 11:45 PM
Ahhhhhhh!

I've been so freaking busy lately!

Working... marriage... taking care of the house... TRYING to work on creative projects... and doing battle with (of all things) YouTube!

Just skip to the bottom to avoid my rant

I recently opened up a YouTube account. I figured why not - maybe I can broaden the audience that views my humble video offerings, right?

Well, two things. YouTube doesn't like some of my videos - I can't seem to get them uploaded without their audio and video sync getting horribly out of sync. So I keep deleting them and trying other ways of coding them so YouTube's re-coding won't mess them up. But I'm loosing the battle.

Another thing - most of YouTube's more vocal users are... well, less than polite. It ain't no TRON-Sector over there. Nope. Anarchy and childish crap run rampent. Oh well - I guess it's a reflection of the internet as a whole.

I noticed that a lot of people do video blogs. Most (not all) of the video blogs are very... well, they're not exactly able to hold my attention for more than 20 seconds or so. Amazingly, these video blogs, where people generally just chat about their day... or nothing at all - they just ramble on, often get a LOT of hits. Well, the female video blogs do anyway, and some of the male ones do. Why? Not sure.

I thought I'd give it a try. BUT I had to *me* it up a little.

So I spent hours and hours working on a video blog in the vein of Max Headroom! I've always been a big Max Headroom fan - why not? I didn't want to just be a carbon copy of Max though, so I kind of went for a slightly more old-school 80's computer look than Max was. I did the green monochrome thing and changed up the background accordingly.

Ok, I'm supposed to be in bed right now. My loving wife (who puts up with my often obsessive video behavior) went to bed over an hour ago and I swore I'd follow soon.

Here - just tell me what you think.

Oh, and if you're a member at YouTube, drop me a YouTube invitation to share videos, won't you?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy6wwy1T0Fc
BTW - No, this video is not currently on my website, but I may add it (a slightly higher quality version). As it is, I'm not sure I'll leave it on YouTube. Spent too many hours not to show anyone though.

Good night.

Yeah!!! I loved that video! I really hope you do finish it. The Max Headroom effect you created was perfect.

I tried reading some of the words in the background, but it's hard without going through it frame by frame. Something tells me there's at least one hidden message in there, somewhere.

I think it's great that you're able to use a site like YouTube to showcase your work. A shame about the problems you've been having, though. That sucks.

I hope that people on YouTube give you a positive response. And if there are are any negatives, that they're at least constructive. Nothing pisses me off more than someone complaining, and then not having a good reason for it. Which means they're just complaining to be spiteful.

You're right about some of the other videos out there . . . the blogs. Like Nornna, for example. I mean, my god. Just a few seconds of one of those, and I'm immediately searching for the window close button. How can anyone make these things, let alone watch them? People are putting up the stupidest and most boring videos, of some daily routine in their lives, and expect people to watch it. And they do!

I mean, I started a blog . . . of sorts. But I'm not posting totally useless crap like that.

That's great, TheReelTodd!! I think you might be onto something there. Doing a video blog series, just rambling on about things in your life like that would be awesome! Could be a major hit some day. It might have that "X" factor everyone would love.

Each should be a bit longer and some should start with: "Hello. This is The-the-the-Reeel-reel-eel-Todd-odd-todd-odd-odd."

I loved Max Headroom! It was a show from the 80s.

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

Todd,

Weed Killer looks cool. Better than Max headroom even! It's sort of Matrix Max in look.

I have to thank you too. When I hit that page I saw a list of 80's music videos below yours, and there was an FLV file of "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz. I have loved that video for ages, and I can never find it. Now I have it thanks to you.

Now if you can just help me find the video for "She Looks A Lot Like You" by The Clocks I will be able to die happy.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Yeah - there are some hidden messages there. You know me.

redrain85 Wrote:I hope that people on YouTube give you a positive response. And if there are any negatives, that they're at least constructive. Nothing pisses me off more than someone complaining, and then not having a good reason for it.

One of my videos got a 1-start rating (the stop motion one) a day after posting it. No message posted, just a crappy 1-star. I guess they REALLY didn't like it.

I don't think I have any comments on my vids yet, but I've seen a LOT of comments on other videos. There are a lot of jerks who like to post "sucked" or "this sucks" or "this sucks-ass you MF" and the list goes on. And a lot of female videos get remarks similar to "whore" and "you're hot..." and "you're an ugly b-tch..." I really don't get what the purpose is. But when people can post idiotic remarks freely (which they can there), that's a lot of what goes on.

I don't mind if people don't like my work. I fully understand that what I produce is not for everyone. I'm a little (perhaps a lot) offbeat. I also understand that some people will just think "amateur" or similar when they see my work. That's fine. In all honesty, I'd rather get some intelligent negative feedback about my work than positive but fake/polite feedback. Of course, REAL positive feedback is my favorite. I imagine I'll get "you suck" messages soon though. The little idiots who like to post nonsense like that are in abundance there. Welcome to the net, right?

Yeah - they watch them and in abundance! I don't understand it either.

Oh, and thank you for your kind words about my video.

Max Headroom was a computer generated talking head with a tendency for really bad puns (sound like anyone?) and prone to computer glitches (hence the stuttering). If you look up Max Headroom on YouTube, you can find some actual footage of him. I was (still am) a huge Max fan. Not everyone cared for him though. In fact, most people did not if memory serves.

The weed killer story is true. I'm telling it in the 3rd person in the clip, but I am "the husband" and my wife is "the wife" in the story.

And thank you - I'm glad you think I'm "good at video editing".

Thanks, Traahn!

I don't think "I'm on to something", but I figured I'd give it a try. The most popular video blogs are of people just talking about their day... or nothing at all - just rambling. Of course, the blogs featuring cute girls are the most popular of the popular (go figure ). But I thought I'd try to video blog with a little style.

Better than the real Max Headroom? Thanks! Yeah - it did have kind of a Matrix look to it I guess. That was unintentional, I was just going for the whole 80's green monochrome thing in a Max Headroom way, but if it adds coolness to it, I'll take it!

Have you tried looking for your video on YouTube? I was surprised how many things one can find there. With thousands of videos being uploaded every hour, they've got almost everything there is to have... or will soon if not already. I bet you find your video there, or on Google Video or one of the handful of others. I'll keep an eye out for it myself.

Wait... wasn't Max Headroom an actor in a shiny suit? I'm sure I read/saw/heard that somewhere. Plus, he looks too... well, real for the technology of the day.

Ah, Wikipedia agrees with me too, but Wikipedia is occasionally inaccurate...

Again, great video!

Yes, Max Headroom was really just actor Matt Frewer wearing a lot of latex makeup and a shiny suit made to look like he was computer generated. I was referring to the story and character of Max Headroom. It's like saying that X-Wings are spaceships. That's what they are - fighter spaceships. In reality they were just little models... and later (for the special edition) computer models (some of them anyway). The animated lines in the background were actually computer rendered though.

Believe it or not, the look of Max Headroom had many of us believing he was indeed computer animated. That plastic look was pretty much the norm for high-end 3D computer graphics back then. It wasn't until reading an article in a magazine some time after first seeing Max in Coke commercials, that I found out they FOOLED me! After that, I could always tell. But he was still cooler than an airconditioner in an igloo to me!
