Anyone with the Tron Viewmaster pack know anything about its production ?

My question really is did Disney/Lisberger bring in a photographer with a viewmaster camera to take 3D-shots which were rendered after (doubtful).

OR did Disney employ a company to perfom a 2D->3D conversion of the production stills.

Ever since Todd's post last year on his 3D Tron 2.0 shots .. I've got sooo into stereo photography, its insane !

So I'm really curious as to the history of these reels .. any info would of course make my user very happy !

I have one of the two sets (Orange and Green) and they are all Production Stills, so I am fairly cetain they were processed by the people at Viewmaster to get the effect.

I haven't looked at mine in a while. Gotta dig them out now.

Hi Dave,

Yes you can scan them on a flatbed scanner - interestingly enough, you need to scan the opposite chips to retain the stereo effect and you can place them side by side, similar to the cross eye sterescopic view format, if you place the left viewed chip on the right.

there is a piece of shareware/software on the market that will read an entire viewmaster reel disc and process all of the images on the disc for you in one hit.

I'm in the process of producing my own set of custom viewmaster reels for a friends short film (currently being edited). We are going to produce 100 reels on our first order. 4 of the 7 shots taken with a stereo camera, the other 3 will be a conversion from 2D->3D.

I have been thinking of a tron-esque short movie for a while, and i have narrowed down two concepts which i'm keen to explore, but I would almost definitely shoot stills with a stereo camera during this process if I can pull it off the ground.

Traahn, yes they do !! IAlas most of my original viewmasters have departed this plane, but I intend to build back a collection, you can get viewers quite cheap on line, or even at Toys'r'us !

DaveTron: So the Viewmaster images are production stills with various effects added, are there any b/w shots from the pre-processed shots as well ?

I'll email you som info on scanning viewmaster reels, which will make the process a lot easier for you.

I won a set of the reels on eBay this week, so I'll get a chance to take a peek at them.

I will probably go ahead with making a mask to scan them in as well, so I'll keep you updated with my progress.

I'm sure Dave will be able to come up with scans that are already on file that match the reels. Not that I want to add any confusion to the issue, but I have a viewmaster "test reel" that I picked up a couple of years ago that I'll have to check. I can't remember whether or not it had the same pics, although I would assume it did, so I'll have to double check.

Now I'll just have to remember where I put it .
