I don't know if anyone else here is familiar with SGI computers. I am in the mids of downloading Dabien linux for it. Its for a friend of mine over here who cannot get into the computer itself and I have to manually download the OS itself. Burn the OS to the CD and manuall install it onto this computer. Its a cool computer system to have. And he doesn't have the time to take a look into it. So he passed it o me for the time being to get it to work and all that. The downloads are long to get the os itself Its like 13 cd's from Dabien linux. Here are the specs of the computer itself. http://www.sgi.com/pdfs/1067.pdf I am doing it for fun over here and to get some experience in working with them.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Sorry - this is all Greek to me.
But I bet you'll enjoy learning all about it as you experiment.
I'm sure the new skills you pick up along the way will be of some benefit to you professionally as well someday.

I guess coming from old school of things of knowing whats what in the computers and seeing models like this and regular computers with more than 1 processor physically in the computer. ARe like nice toys for me. And especially using them on a regular basis and knowing how to use them are something of a rarity for me. Something like what I-no was in tron 2.0. But its fun using something like this and you can tell friends all about it.

13 CDs? Wow, no idea Debian was that big. I was considering installing that myself on a spare computer, if I could find one.
As for the specs- I can't say I know alot about computers, but dual 300Mhz processors, and up to a gig of RAM? Wow, that's pretty crazy. In any case, I love to play with one of those myself. Have fun with it. ------------

I am sure they have it sectioned out that some of those CD's are source code, and some applications. If you want to try linux on a spare pc that you have at your home I would suggest this one here. www.ubuntu.com. This one specifically is a good one for anyone. I am running breezy badger and Hoary Hedgehog from them. on two seperate machines. And its really good since you can get about 10-20 thousands different apps for it. And just install or compile it like I always say somehow for packages that are not available through the nice simple add/remove section they already have there. Since ubuntu it is also based on debian. The O2 that I am getting the downloads for is a Risc based computer and its not the same as the regular brand name computer or home brewed computer that you can make yourself to use at home.

Wished I could help, but I don't have much experience with that... but I did aquire a tech data base a while ago that could help with Linux if there are any issues you run across.
I have it on a DVD somewhere, but don't know where.... Damn, my place is a mess....

Hey Qix77. Just think of it this way computers like SGI & Sun workstation as examples are similar to to your regular run of the mill home computer with one exception here. Instead of using the AMD, Intel or Motorola processors. They are using Sparc/RISC based processors. And instead of using EIDE or SATA drives they are using SCSI drives. ANd of course a Unix varient OS. Most of the information for these kinds of computers you can still pull off of the manufacturer. Like for error codes for hardware or software. I never used Irix before but heck if linmux will work with it. Just need to install that instead of Irix.
I'll be able to pull it off over here once I get the OS onto CD. And do a reformat of the hard driver and reinstall linux. It'll be fun to work with for a little while. Could be good for something like tron too.
