Mainly, because... well... aside from the obvious reasons, it would help me get better acquainted with the new book that's out.
I hear it's a PC game and a First Person Shooter. That's all I know.
Surely my fellow conscripts here at TS can give me a brutally honest and in depth game review before I shell out X dollars and Y cents.

Considering X dollars is probably no more than $9 and Y cents is probably no more than 0.99 cents ... I say you should get it. I think it can be found even cheaper than that, no? (I haven't checked for a while... but it doesn't seem like $5 would be out of the question).
Regardless, Riddle Me This... fellow conscript... fellow program... I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It was a very nice adventure, and one that is not like any other. I really think you should get it. Although I have some brutally honest nitpickty things that bothered me, the total experience way outshines these little things.
You have to understand we (the community) had gone without much Tron stuff in YEARS before this game came out. I'd waited 20 long years to finally get the chance to walk around in the Tron environments in a video game. I was finally able to do this with Tron 2.0 and it was worth it!
I tried to not give too much away here... but may have failed in some respects. So don't read if you are easily spoiled...
I liked:
(1) The game. The story. The 'seeing what's next' aspect of things. They were some neat adventures within this game. Several of them unique because, hey, this is a Tron world -- never really been explored in a game before.
(2) The cinematic sequences were well done. I really like the opening cinematic, personally. When I first saw it in the game demo (pre-launch), I was in awe and very excited. The other cinematics were pretty cool, too.
(3) The graphics. Glowing... Tron... unique... gorgeous. They took the movie Tron and expanded on it visually. You might think that taking the visuals to a new level would be a bad thing, but no... they really did a great job visually, imo.
(4) The variety of Tron worlds you get to visit.
Now I'll be brutally honest and say I was disappointed that:
(1) There weren't more varieties of enemy AI. (I tire of repetition and spot it quickly.)
(2) There were only like one or two de-rez animations. (Disappointing, considering the movie had several different types. Again, a 'lack of variety' thing.)
(3) The characters annoyed me at times. For example, one old program (character) that I wished was wise like an owl, was instead goofy and flighty. Alan somehow became a whimpering old man with no backbone; with no respect for Flynn and didn't want his son to "be like Flynn," even though Flynn pretty much headed Encom at the end of the movie. There was also a lack of character development on some characters.
(4) Light cycle sequences seemed to pop in out of nowhere. (Lack of continuity?)
(5) The environments were lacking with respect to interactibility. (Is that a word?) Basically, you couldn't do much more with the surrounding environments than push buttons and break walls of glass. Even pre-scripted AI that you converse with only had one or two things they'd say if you tried talking to them over and over again. Very limited there. There were obviously health pickups, weapons and pre-scripted interactions you could carry out... but nothing like a Havok physics engine letting you manipulate a bunch of objects. Likewise, if you watch Tron you'll notice little light blips and zips happening in practically every scene. Unfortunately in Tron 2.0, the environments weren't quite as blippy and zippy, imo. So, you know... static textures on walls and stuff. But that's just me being nitpicky.
(6) Multi-player. Very few people play online, compared to other games out there. I'm not a huge fan of the deathmatch/disc games they have on multi-player either. Pretty limited stuff, imo. I like lightcycles best, but it's hard to find lightcycle players so I hardly ever go online.
I could write more (many good things, some bad), but I'm getting tired here. Take it easy. And I hope you get the game soon...

That's a common sentiment I hear so often . . . Tron fans who had no idea this game existed. (No slight intended against you, Riddle Me This.) Because I can't tell you how many times I've heard from people who came across it by accident, took a chance, and then went "holy crap, look at what I've been missing out on!".
Surely my fellow conscripts here at TS can give me a brutally honest and in depth game review before I shell out X dollars and Y cents. |
Well, I won't give you a review. Traahn already covered things, pretty well.
I disagree about the Light Cycles coming out of nowhere, though. I thought they were used at logical points in the game.
I also disagree about lack of interesting animation and detail, in the levels. I think there's plenty of things to look at, along with many movie-inspired sound effects like blips and bleeps.
As for how many X dollars and Y cents . . . fortunately (unfortunately?) you can usually find it for less than $10 now. In fact, you may end up paying the same price for it as you did the comic. So there's no excuse, not to pick it up!
I recommend the PC version (the Mac version is identical), it has the best Single Player experience. Just make sure you have the specs required, to run it on your PC. I have a page that describes the specs:

You're misunderstanding me, but I blame that on my unclear writing and tiredness I do agree with you that there was a lot of interesting animation and detail in the levels... certainly. You know, the skies shifting, the backgrounds where things would fly by, etc. There was a lot of great stuff happening to keep it quite interesting. And the sounds, too, yes... wow! Great blips and several familiar Tron sounds, which I loved!
So I guess I'm referring mainly to the walls themselves. If you go down a long hallway, for instance, there's nothing happening on the actual walls usually, other than a beautiful static artistic design. Their beauty get a rating of 8 or 9 from me, but what would've pushed them to a 10 would've been more dynamics. Where there are Tron lines bordering the edges of the walls, for instance, I was hoping for more dynamicism there; where little light blips would randomly travel down the hallway or something with a corresponding sound. This is pretty nitpicky and just my personal preference. I'm working on a video game mod right now and see how it'd be hard to incorporate such dynamics, but from a player's perspective, you don't think of the technical limitations.
As for the lightcycles, I feel the first encounter with them made sense. But then after that, those lightcycle levels just got thrown into the game with very little segway, imo. One second I'm walking around first-person style, the next second I'm thrust into a light cycle arena... ??where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

If you can, I'd stay away from the X-Box version. It's buggy and there's no way to patch it. Being that, at the time, I had no choice, that it what I played. I encountered:
1) Inability of the X-Box to play smoothly if the "glow" option was used (dissapointing!!!)
2) Major audio problems. Audo fading in an out, or not being there at all
3) Freeze ups/crashes.
4) Playing online will cost you money (PC version is free)
Other than that, I did manage to make it through and did enjoy it. I would like to play the PC version all the way through at some point but am backed up on games as it is.

So my Game Spot didn't have it. But then again, my mall is going down the shithole anyway.

Gamespot wouldn't have it. They're useless for PC software now.
You'd have to try places like Fry's, Target, maybe Best Buy would still have it. There was a thread a while back, about Big Lots selling it. (Sad. )

Find the game. It may take a little hunting on your part, but it will be worth it.
Buy the game.
Install the game.
Install the latest update (available in the TRON-Sector file archives and several other spots on the net).
Play the game.
It may not be the best game you've ever played before, but it is one awesome experience!
When I first started playing the single player adventure, I literally didn't want to stop. I just couldn't wait to find out what was around the next glowing digital corner. I almost felt like I was digitized myself because I so enjoyed the experience.
The game has its faults and annoyances. Every game's got them. But as a whole, this game ROCKS!

I never thought of it as a fps.
Yes, at its core, it is basically a fps. You play in the fist person, and you do shoot things.
But beyond that, the game is soooooo much more.
Although you play in the first person and shoot things, this is a lot more like an adventure game to me. I felt like I was on an adventure when I played it. It was an awesome adventure! Its more than just an adventure as well though. abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Try used bookstores that sell video games. That's where I found my copy. With my trade credit it was free!

What I would have loved to had seen would be on other operating systems like YUbuntu Lnux, for the PC or some other similar workstations that are Higher end like Oh Sun Microsystems ultra 10 or ultra 5 as an example. But that is just me though. I am one of those odd ball computer hardware junkies over here.

Just pick it up on Amazon.com or eBay.
TRON 2.0 has a great single-player story. In it, you'll pick up bits and pieces of what has transpired in the real and virtual worlds since the movie. You'll be introduced to new characters and new locales. You'll have a lot of fun.
TRON 2.0 also has fun and challenging multiplayer games. Personally, I prefer light cycles to both disc arena and derez, but they're all fun.
No true TRON enthusiast can pass up the opportunity presented by TRON 2.0 to explore the electronic world. So get to it already!

It took my internet connection dropping to get my to play it. :P I've had it for a couple of years and my computer wasn't good enough to run it and I put it in a closet for a couple of years. Fade to a couple of nights ago when I'm looking for something to do and throw it in. Now, I'm not a fan of first person shooters, but this game rocks! I'd definately grab this up.
