Tron comic issue 1: Spoiler type discussion thread

on Wednesday, April, 26, 2006 8:26 PM
When I'm reading something, I'm often terrified of spoilers. Some of my friends disagree. They don't care and are content to have important story aspects of a movie/comic/novel/whatever given away. In case anyone wishes to discuss the story taking place in the comic. without worrying about spoilers, we could do so here. assuming of course that anyone wishes to discuss these things. I do have a bit of a presumptuous nature.

I'm very very curious about the Jet ghost. What the hell happened? Was it like Windows XP System Restore type thing, where it just brought it back because Jet.exe (Jet.user) had been on the system for so long, it assumed it was a real program, and brought him back there.

And the war! War with another system? Everything was purple, still fCon? And what happened to the fCon team? Did they ever get out? Is Alan ok?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I actually did not know that everything was purple until a couple of days ago, as I'm colorblind. That said, it's an artistic choice of Louie's. The war is between the red and the blue (as ever), although other aspects certainly exist in some capacity, same as in the film. The purple is how Louie chooses to represent it this conflict

Time will tell in that regard.

I read it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the artwork was amazing and the story engrossing and interesting. Dark....darker than Tron and Tron 2.0 but that's good, I like that. It’s definitely a different feel and setting than the first two Tron installments and I like it.

I feel that the program that meets Jet at the end is Lora...not Mercury... does anyone else feel that?

I liked how Jet lives in the old Flynn's arcade building.. That was VERY cool imagery.

The psychiatrist is spooky. I think he's up to no good.

All in all, A+++ very very good.

I just mailed a copy to Steven. I am curious to hear his take on it.

As I said in anotehr thread, I really enjoyed it, and I am looking forward to issue 2.

I wanna see if what I suspect is happening is happening.

I just posted a review of the first issue HERE.

It contains a fair amount of spoilers, so for those of you snooping this thread that actually still don't have the comic: you've been warned! (I tried not to give out too many major spoilers, and kept the sample artwork at low resolution.)

I just wanted to say that the comic exceeded my expectations, and I'm looking forward to the next issue. Just too bad it's going to be a long wait.

redrain85:

I just read your review. Many very kind words and I thank you.

You raise some interesting and valid points that I've been expecting and itching to address. I think one thing we get into here is the difference in telling a story within a game and within a comic book. In a game, the story is designed to push the game forward, but it is not necessarily the product itself. In print, the story is the product. Subsequently, issues of character motivation and reaction can require a different approach. Particularly when dealing with a sequel of this nature.

One of the first problems we addressed when we began working on this is that Jet in the game behaves in some contradictory manners. Does he care about Mercury? Or is everything that passed between them easy enough to write off in a screensaver joke? Aspects of this bothered me with the substories approach to Flynn as well. Do Jet and Flynn view the programs as beings? As life? And if they do not... well... How interesting would it be to have Jet return to the computer world without any care for any character he encountered?

By my perspective, both Jet and Flynn are portrayed as empathic beings. Flynn's response to the deaths of Ram and Crom give us evidence of this to a large degree. Having had that experience, having come to accept these programs as "life", then to return to programming. To hit the delete key without remorse... to play god... it would be inconsistent with the overall portrayal of the character to a much deeper degree than reversing Jet's happy go lucky attitude at the end of the game. We could do it, of course. But I think that having Jet unaffected by his experience would make for less of a story.

As for Ma3a, well... think about how different Ma3a seemed when Jet was dealing with her while in the real world, versus how they interacted within the digital world. I think you'll find that our take on this is not as different from the game as you might think.

Of course, all this is reliant upon interpretation. Much like any piece of fan fiction is a matter of interpretation. And that's really what it is. Fan fiction with enough money behind it to make it into print legally. In many ways, the game is the same thing. A licensed property based off of the film. The only true Tron story is the one Lisberger created years ago.

That was a very good review. Good constructive criticism that made me think about the story I am telling from another perspective. I really look forward to your take on the next issue.

Ah, thank you . . . that helps me to understand the change. I was thinking more along the lines of "what could possibly have terrified them" (Flynn and Jet), when that never seemed to be the case. But if the characters are empathizing with the life they discovered in that other world, then I can see them becoming confused and feeling regret about what had happened.

As for Ma3a, well... think about how different Ma3a seemed when Jet was dealing with her while in the real world, versus how they interacted within the digital world. I think you'll find that our take on this is not as different from the game as you might think.
I'll go back and read the comic, and think about it some more. Maybe with some more reflection, I might change my mind a bit.

And that's really what it is. Fan fiction with enough money behind it to make it into print legally. In many ways, the game is the same thing. A licensed property based off of the film. The only true Tron story is the one Lisberger created years ago.
Mr. Lisberger certainly created a terrific story, but I think you're being too modest.

That was a very good review. Good constructive criticism that made me think about the story I am telling from another perspective. I really look forward to your take on the next issue.
Thank you, I'm glad you thought it was a worthwhile read. That means a lot.

Funny boy. Steven's anxious to read it.

Will have his review soon.

I had suggested a storyline similar to what I think is going on for a sequel game (along with about 10 other people), and I think you guys have travelled the same route on one particular point.

I'm not going to say until I read #2.

What's the date for that issue?

Could be many things. PrinceAuron. It could have been as well a restore from the drives that he was digitized too as well. Or from a backup of some sort on tape. It'll be a secret until we find out in the second issue. And until I get my mits on it myself here to read it over here. I can only speculate about it here.

I'm told issue two will be in July. But like with this last issue, I can't guarantee a solid release date. Me, I'm working on three and four.

I'm both looking forward to Steven's impression and am also terrified. Later issues should have a creator credit for him. Most of the extra text in this one was dropped by accident. Including the letterer credit (David Hedgecock), my email address and mention of this website.

In case anyone is interested, the first two issues were written while listening to the soundtrack for the movie "Steamboy". I read it...

[SPOILERS so this is your warning all you snoopers]
AGHHHHH! ALAN! HOW COULD THAT HAVE HAPPENED?!?

War! But who are they at war with? Why is everything purple? Questions, questions...

Why is there another Jet? How can there be a backup copy of a User? Did the other Jet shoot Alan? If so, how did he get out of the computer?

On a more philosophical note, is he human, or progam?

Who is the mysterious female program? She don't look like Mercury...Is she Lora?

And what the heck happened to Flynn?

All will be revealed in time...

And the most puzzling question I have, more puzzling than the fate of Flynn: Why did Alan say Lora while looking at the computer? Is it true that during the laser accident, she was digitized into the computer system? Is she somehow still ALIVE?
