Apps 'n' Stuff

on Wednesday, February, 08, 2006 4:31 AM
I’m current looking for good software applications to try out. I’m just asking to see what apps, you guys at the sector, use. Here is a list of what I’ve been using. Most of these are out of date.

Sound apps:

Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 (I bought this one back in 1998. It’s a really good midi-sequencer)

Sound Forge 4.5 (I’m going to upgrade to 8.x as soon as I get enough money.)

Cool Edit Pro (much like Sound Forge but it is now developed as Adobe Audition)

DMC MP3/WAV encoder/decoder (it’s also a good CD ripper) – this is freeware

Mod Plug (a freeware music mod player)

WinAmp (This is my fav. Mp3 player)

GFX apps:

Paint Shop Pro 8 (I’m currently looking into Adobe Photo Shop)

True Space 3 (I think version 9 is out. This is a very outdated 3D gfx. A little like 3DS Max)

Net apps:

Getright (my version is really old)

mIRC (still an old version)

FTP client (I was using FTP explorer but it’s old and buggy)

FireFox (browser)

Compression Tools:
WinZip (older version. Still works great)

WinRar (also an old version that still works)

WinAce (haven’t used this in a very long time)

ARJ (dos version)

LHZ (dos version but rarely used)

Ok… I’m looking to try out new software. I ask that now because most of what I have is out of date. Plus I got all my credit card bills all paid off… lol… So what to you guys use…. Oh… and for you techs out there, what type of diagnostic tools do you use, and other tech apps?

What I usually use:

Photoshop 6-CS
Illustrator 9-CS
Flash MX 2004 Professional
Flash 8
Endorphine 1.5
SoundForge 7-8
Vegas (Whatever the most recent version is)
Windows Movie Maker 2 (Don't underestimate this program! It actually IS decent. I've recently made this AMV with it: http://www.youtube.com/w/Fire-Nation-Video?v=E8zPj6zeIvM )
3D Studio Max 7-8
FlashGet (I love this program to death! It's one of my new favs)
WinRar
WinAce
ZBrush2
SWFCacheViewer
Word Perfect 10 (Corel was always better than MS Word.)
RealPlayer (I will always bug DaveTRON about this one. REALPLAYER RULES!)
Open Canvas (Rarely)
Corel Painter

Apps on my new iPAQ PDA:

PocketArtist 3 (Which is like Photoshop for PDAs)

As for how I got them, I'm not saying and don't ask me either! Otherwise, I think DaveTRON would probably send the MCP after me. ^^;

Here are some of the programs I'm using now:

Avast! Home Edition (Decided to stop using Norton Systemworks, Avast! is really good considering it's completely free)

McAfee Personal Firewall (I used to use ZoneAlarm Pro, but McAfee's firewall has a nicer interface and works just as well)

Leechget (I used to use GetRight, but I think Leechget is better and again it's completely free)

Spybot Search and Destroy (There might be something better out there by now, but Spybot is still completely free)

Trillian Pro (I'm actually not that fond of Trillian because it's buggy, but it's the only IM program that supports all the different protocols)

Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (Again, there might be something better by now, but the program basically hasn't changed since Adobe took it over)

FFDShow (All-in-one replacement for Divx, Xvid, 3ivx, etc. that works quite well, but I'm not sure I'll keep using it)

StyleXP (Allows you to use non-certified XP Desktop Themes)

XnView (Not sure if I'll keep using it, but it's a pretty nice image viewing program that's similar to ACDsee and once again it's free)

Paintshop Pro 10 (Still a very nice program that's almost as good as Photoshop for a lot less money, but I'm not sure about its future now that Corel took it over)

XP-AntiSpy (Turns off the most annoying features of XP, also completely free)

Well, that's most of what I use. I'm sure I'll think of more stuff later.

Kamui Wrote:RealPlayer (I will always bug DaveTRON about this one. REALPLAYER RULES!)
RealPlayer SUCKS.

It's bloated. It tries to take over all your media playing even if you don't want it. It constantly nags you unless you turn that off. The video quality is no better than any other format.

The only advantage it has is file size . . . the videos are usually pretty small. But that's it for the advantages. I would trash RealPlayer in a heartbeat if I didn't still need it sometimes. Unfortunately, the RealPlayer "Alternative" didn't work all that well for me so I went back to the original player. Yuck.

Sorry, I agree with DT and will have to "agree to disagree" with you on this one.

^ Agreed on RP... haven't used it in a LONG time..

I do a lot of work in visual effects, and despite the 3d models I posted that everyone seemed to like, I've only been doing 3d for a few months... Here's the programs I use most often:

Adobe After Effects v 6.0

Adobe Photoshop CS / Illustrator CS

IrfanView (latest version, whatever # it is)

Audacity (audio editor... Can I get a W00t for freeware?!)

Blender (again, W00t for freeware! lol)

Noteworthy Composer for midi

Nero 7 w/ DVD burning rom

Firefox browser (W00t again!... Oh, sorry.. gettin carried away here... lol)

And there ya go... I used to use a freeware image editor as well, but it didn't have NEARLY the options that Photoshop does, so I splurged & got the real thing... So far there's no freeware compositing program that even comes close to After Effects, so I stick with it... But I'm on a mission to prove that someone with freeware can make just as high-quality products as someone with the expensive stuff... And it wouldn't surprise me if someone eventually comes out with freeware composition/image editing software that rivals the better ones...

Let's see, what do I have...

Graphical stuff..

SaintPaint Studio - Kinda like MSPaint on steroids

PhotoImpression - Came with my PC, it works ok for some photo manipulation but it's nothing spectacular

The Gimp - An open-source Photoshop-type program that I am trying to learn to use

Audio/video stuff...

PowerDVD - Came with my DVD drive, I like it.

Interactual DVD player - I use it sometimes, for DVD's that have content that need it.

Winamp - I like it lots...I have plugins that let me watch/listen to pretty much any media file

Quicktime - I have the free player, and I'm thinking about getting Pro.

RecordNow - CD burner that came with my PC. It's ok, but I wana get something like Nero eventually

Instant messaging stuff...

Yahoo - I've had some version of this since I've been on the net

MSN - I'm not on it like I used to be, but I keep it around sine I have friends who don't like yahoo

Trillian - Just got this, I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not.

Real player is annoying. I hate how it tries to set itself up as the default for everything, and in order to turn it off completely, you gotta go into the task manager.

Oh yeah...

FIREFOX ROCKS!!!

I'm also not a fan of Real networks. I only have it because there are rare audio files that I have only in .ram format. I'm still trying to find a ways to convert them to .wav. But hey... whatever works...

I love winamp because it's simple, moddable, and it doesn't bug the snot out of you... and it doesn't run as a background program unless you install Wild-Tangent. Oh... how much I hate WT...

I so love FireFox... I've been using it of almost a year now and it has have to best features. Plus the extentions are so great. As long as mozilla is doing good, then FireFox should always be doing good. I also use Thunderbird... It's ok... One feature I like about it is that if any spam leaks through your spam guard, then you can flagg it as trash and is always sent there everytime you recieve it...

Thanks guys for the app input. I'll try some of them out. I got Gimp but I haven't used it yet.

As for Cool Edit Pro.... It is now Adobe Audition. Adobe bought out the Cool Edit guys... I have the demo, and it's really nice. I'm going to be making music with it.

I never used Endorphine or Vegas before... I'll go check them out.... Thanks, Kamui...

Ok... Keep them comming...

Ok... Keep them comming...

Vegas = A video editing program a lot like Movie Maker.... on Steriods

Endorphine = Creates realistic 3D animations of people falling, collisions and stuff. Really cool but expensive and hard to find.

And hey! I love my real player! It'll always have a soft spot with me.

I'm SO SICK of the following....

1.) Programs that will not allow you to run unless you first connect to their server first... (I have old software that I spent $100+ on and I can no longer use).

2.) Software that wants to run into the background without your consent.. (What the hell do these developers think? That I built my computer just to use their software? Those pugey bastards!!!)

3.) [edited by Qix77] --- it was uncalled for.

4.) Spyware (no brainer)

5.) Software which is uninstalled but leaves a lot of crap behind. (This isn't really an issue but read number 6)

6.) Softice, after uninstalled, does not allow my computer to boot properly... (I can't get the XP boot logo to show and 'BootXP' can not fix the issue.)

If anyone else is pissed off like I am, we should start a group and demand an end to this BS..... Who's with me?

[Edited by Qix77] ...this was also uncalled for.

Love you guys... thanks for over looking this...

end of line....

CCleaner is really a nice freeware program. What it does is find useless files and reg. keys on your computer and gets rid of them. It is also a nice uninstaller and very easy to use.

I'm still looking for a bunch of nifty programs and if I find anything else I think you guys might be intrested in, I'll post them here...

Thanks for the tip about CCleaner, Qix! I've used similar programs before, but that program looks very nice and it seems to be free.
