Well, I made my first interactive flash movie. It's a Tron Tank that you can move around with the arrow keys on your keyboard...
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/28449372/
Boring, I know... and yes it moves like a Atari 2600 Combat tank, but this was mostly for learning purposes.
I learned
1) How to incorporate ActiveScript into Flash
2) How to make and incorportate transparent gifs into it.
3) How masks work and apply themselves in ActionScript.
What I hope to do next:
1) Sound
2) The tank will fire.
3) The turret will move seperately from the rest of the tank.
4) Interactivity with other objects in the movie (walls and recognizers)

That was basic, but fun.
Nice work, Boingo_Buzzard.
You know what would be cool?
See if you can recreate Combat, using the TRON tanks and sound effects.
It would be a good Flash exercise, and a really cool Combat/TRON game!

That's pretty cool. Looks like someone beat me to the punch and came up with an interactive Tron Flash. ^^; If you were on Sheezy Art and same with that Flash, you get an instant Fav and Watch.

Tron Tank Demo 2 has been published:
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/28582374/
This time the tank's movement is controlled by the up and down keys. Up arrow will roll it forward, and down will roll it backwards. Right and Left arrows rotate the WHOLE tank. Z and X keys will rotate the turret.
Working this out was somewhat of a pain, and I had to cheat and resort to other examples to figure out how to move the tank. It's wierd the things you don't think about until you have to program for them.
Just for example, telling the code that you want the tank to move in a linear path relative to it's rotation was an interesting pickle. Also, being able to have the turret rotate at a different rate than the body, but still MOVE like the body was also an interesting problem.
Next, the tank will fire. After that I hope either sound or interaction with obstacles.
Please feel free to comment.......

This rocks!
However, has anyone else gotten queasy playing it too?

Impressive. I've tried using Flash before, and it confused the heck out of me.

Cool!
You're getting better at this and it's fun to see your progression of learning and tank maneuverability.
My first thought is that I want to see this in a fully playable game, which I know you're working toward.
Secondly, man - how cool would it be to do this in 3D? Turning the turret is cool looking while driving around... though it does look odd when the turret is facing backward because it really looks off-balance that way. That is by the design of the tank though.
Oh - the tank does not turn evenly. It seems to do very tight circles to the left and larger circles to the right. The right turn seems more authentic looking in terms of angle it takes.
Looking good though. Looking forward to more!

I was wondering who would catch that. The problem I faced is that the turret and tank body are two separate objects. However, they have to rotate at the same angle. The tank body rotates at a different axis than the turret does. In Flash the center of rotation is the center of the image, so the center of the turret and the center of the tank are different. I had to compromise by making the center of the turret and the tank the same, by offsetting the tank body to match the center of the turret (e.g. increasing the image area size). This, unfortunately, makes the tank body rotate off-center.
Kudos to Todd for catching this. Do you have a solution by any chance?

I love this. I like being able to maneuver the turret separate from the tank. Good job! Flash is definitely not easy. I don't know how many times I've just said "Enough!" and then given it up for months on end as I find it impossible to do the things I want it to do and can't find any tutorials on the web for the things I need it to do. Action scripts... who can code those things from scratch?? I'm sure you can gRid_89a. For that, I envy you!
