Vanishing Point

on Thursday, December, 29, 2005 1:54 PM
Today a Motor Trend Magazine caught my eye in the store, well actually stopped me dead in my tracks. On the cover was two new concept cars by Chrysler, one which is the new DODGE CHALLENGER concept. It's designs like this that set my soul ablaze with a firery lust for Detroit automotive.

These images are off the net. I can't find any better photos. The ones in Motor Trend are freakin amazing and really strut the Challangers agressive styling!

Oh, here's a photo comparison of the new design with the classic old-school Challenger for those who don't know what the old ones looked like.

I hope this design becomes showroom floor reality. The timing is perfect for it with the retro styled Mustang out.

Cool looking car.

It looks very 60's retro.

And it looks like it'd be a lot of fun to tear up the roads in!

ooo pretty. I have to look at the real beauty, of chopping the top off, rolling the sides, installing steel tube seats, putting a steel "beak infront" of that hideous grill, *rolling headlights, smooth it all over, ram air, and some steel eyes in those little air holes in the hood, and dont forget the wheels.. yep, that car has some serious potential! hrmm... guess I'll never get a job at dodge! lol

I think I could see Kowalski in that new Challenger.

They did a really good job adopting the classic '70 Challenger design. Much better than that lame-o excuse for a Charger, that's for sure.

I just hope the interior isn't the same as all the rest of the cars based off of the Chrysler 300/Dodge Magnum/Dodge Charger. Talk about dull.

In my opinion, automotive design peaked in the mid 60's through the to mid to late 70's with the cars coming out of Detroit and Kenosha. Oh there were a few inspired designs in the early 80's, but just a few.

Now we have the retro Mustang and the retro Challenger. Now we just need a retro Camero.

Too bad we'll never see a retro Javelin and retro '66 Toronado.

It looks cool, its kinda like a Ford Capri Mk2 on Steroids.

Id really love to own one of those 70s American Police Cars, the real square looking things with coloured wings/fenders and white doors. A Ford Capri Mk2 on steroids? I honestly don't see the resemblance.

It looks like an idealized version of the '70 Challenger to me.

There were many. You have any examples of the car you are referring to? A car you saw in a movie, perhaps?

You're probably thinking of the Dodge Monaco or Ford Crown Victoria.

Yeah, the 60-s and mid 70's cars where amazing. The companies rolled out awsome cars aimed at the street generation. The designs are so agressive and still are even today. The styels really define the time they where made in. Then the late 70's-80's hit and cars became very stale and economic in deisign.

Vroom vroom baby!

I love this design!
So great to see that R/T symbol shining in that awsome grill.

Wow! Look at that interior!

All black with ribbed seating surfaces, a pistol-grip shifter and the gauges are arranged 70's-style, but check out the navigation where the speedo would've been!

We'll see how this is translated into a production model. Aside from the name, the Charger concept and the production car are two completely different cars, and I hope that won't be the case with the Challenger.

Well, Jade's car is a '71 Picard Pirahna, which is supposed to be a Plymouth Barracuda, which is Plymouth's version of the Dodge Challenger, so yeah, it does look like it came out of Interstate '76!

The Plymouth Barracuda, later called Cuda, was manufactured by Plymouth from 1964 through 1974. The Barracuda was a spin off of the existing Plymouth Valiant line. They were restyled in 1970, and while the Challanger and Barracudda are twins, since both are E-Body cars, not one exterior body panel is interchanged between the two cars.

Rest in peace Plymouth, you will be missed.

I thought it was just that latest Mustang that's out, but I admit I haven't really looked at that Mustang in a lot of detail to know for sure. It seems like it anyways, at first glance. It looks good on the outside, but I hate to say it - I'm fearful of American cars on the mechanical side of the spectrum. Are my fears unwarranted? I should look at some statistical studies.

True, but they did share more than a passing resemblance.

Black on orange is so classic.... This car is a mimic of the age of 70's Hotrods.... and they look like they may make a come-back this time.... I hope so...
