I probably should have posted this earlier, but I figured no one here at The Sector would be able to make it anyway. Well, I would have hooked you up with free tickets if you could have.
Some of you may remember the animated music video I recently completed added to my site (link is in my sig). A very short video that took a very LONG time to complete. It's gotten decent traffic on my website since I premiered it.
Well, tonight it will have a slightly different audience. On the Cutting Room Floor of Oblivion will be shown on the big screen at a local theatre!
What's cooler than seeing your own hard work on the BIG screen in front of an actual, paying audience? A local theatre called "The Little Theatre" (no, it's not physically little, that's just the name) screens films submitted by local (NYS) artists once a month. They screened Just Turn Around, a comedy short I made, last summer there, but I didn't attend the screening of that. I don't get to the movies much, even when they're playing mine. But this time I've decided to attend. It's way past my bedtime, but what the heck. I want to see if it makes people smile. That means a lot to an artist - the smile their work may bring to others.
Here's a link to the "Emerging Filmmakers Series" page at The Little Theatre's site. Mine is listed toward the bottom of the page.
http://www.little-theatre.com/moviePage.php?filmID=329
(if you check this link after Monday 9/26/2005 it may not work or it may display different information)
By the looks of it, my short production will be the most senseless, pointless, and FUN of the bunch! I only hope it holds up to the production quality of the others that will be shown. I saw a preview clip of the One Balloon film, and it looked really strange, and REALLY well produced - of course, they actually had a budget to work with! Mine is slated to be the last film shown. Hmm, are they saving the best for last? Naa, it's probably just because I sent in my master copy on the last day of the deadline!
Well, that's it. I've been really busy lately, but wanted to take a moment and share.

So... how'd they convert your video to film? Or do they just have one of those projectors now that can hook up to a DVD player?
This is pretty much how David Lynch got started, so this could be the first step towards becoming a big time director!

They asked for either a DVD or miniDV tape for use making the master for showing. I originally just submitted a VHS tape for them to consider showing. When they said I made the cut, I sent in a miniDV tape. MiniDV retains slightly higher quality than DVD.
I think they're just using a theatrical digital projector. Some of the other submissions were actually shot and edited on film, and I imagine it's the same for them - digital conversion for the screening.
I've never been to their Emerging Filmmakers Series screening, so I'm not sure if the projection of the films will look digitized (pixels showing) or if their equipment will smooth it out and make it look really pretty. Of course, the resolution of miniDV is only 720x480, so I'm expecting some minor blurriness or pixelation to be present when projected on such a big screen.
I just hope everyone digs my humble production.
In terms of the start of a new career for me... well, that would be really nice! But I doubt there will be any big-time industry folks there. I'll settle for people just enjoying my work and some applause after it screens. It will be neat to see their reactions in person.
Well, I'm off in just a few...

Thanks, guys!
Well, I enjoyed the short films presented last night. Their projection system was very good quality. Only when I looked really hard and the conditions were just right, could I notice any signs that it was a digital projection. For the most part, the image quality was excellent!
There were other films with animation and composite imagery in them too. I thought that was really cool.
The theatre was almost completely packed with only a few scattered seats remaining empty. Not sure how many people it holds, but I would guess about 300 or 400. It is one of the smaller theatres there.
One thing I found odd, is that no one clapped when each production finished. It was just silent. I did not attend the showing of Just Turn Around last summer, but those who did attend told me that people generally clapped after each production. Hmm. The ONLY applause last night was following the showing of the cruelty to chickens documentary. There were a lot of activists and friends of the people involved in that production, and you could tell exactly where each of them were sitting following the documentary - they were the ones scattered about clapping.
The crowd there was pretty much the artsy type. I could tell that immediately because of the general atmosphere, the kind of audience The Little Theatre draws (they play mostly independent films) and just by watching people fill up the theatre. Yep - that was an artsy crowd... with several activists in there. There was a buzz about the chicken documentary even before the show started. I didn't care for the chicken documentary much, but on the technical end, it was produced with superb and absolute professional production quality. I told that to one of the producers on the way out of the theatre too - they really did an excellent job with it technically.
Well, the other films were generally artsy. There was very little dialogue, a lot of symbolism, strange imagery (loved that!), and unique presentations. I was actually worried about how an artsy audience would react to my very light hearted, silly, and just plain fun animated video. I mean, On the Cutting Room Floor of Oblivion is hardly the kind of thing that artsy folk care to see.
To my delight, the very quiet and motionless crowd laughed and chuckled during my production! Woo hoo - mission accomplished! They laughed! I hope it was for the right reasons!
As great as their digital projection system was, my production did not play with the quality I put in to it. The sound separation was messed up. I could clearly tell that the left audio channel was doubled to both left and right, and that the right audio channel was lost. My recording on miniDV is not like that so I'm not sure why they played it like that. It bothered me because I spent so much effort on specific right and left audio mixing and it just looked and sounded stupid when things on the right side of the screen had no sound effect accompanying them. Grrrrr! And for some reason, I looked VERY grainy during my intro stop-motion dance sequence. I mean I looked like I had dirt peppered on me! I was very embarrassed by that. I hoped that the audience thought that was on purpose and part of the look. The source video file is not nearly that grainy. On the computer, and when played on a TV, I do not appear very grainy at all. Their system really made the graininess stand out like a sore thump. Bummer.
Like an excited kid, I took some quick photos of my production playing with my communicator's built-in camera. Unfortunately, the camera quality is not very good and the photos look really bad. You can hardly even tell that it's taken in a theatre. Oh well. I'll share them anyway.
That red dot on the left is actually the emergency exit sign. Great image quality my com-cam has, eh?
This image is just as the words "On the Cutting..." were about to fall in to place - my tongue

Kudos to you, Todd!!!
I know the feeling of having something you've made being shown on the big screen. It's a great thing and something that not EVERYONE can say they've done!
I thoroughly enjoyed your video and would love to have been there in support!
Way to go! Maybe one day we'll get to work together!
Just remember us here at the Sector when you move onto Hollywood!

Thanks! I would have loved to have you there when I showed it. It would have been nice if a few people applauded for my little production instead of just the chicken documentary.
And me moving on to Hollywood?
That's a long, long way off. I don't even have plans to make it in Hollywood. When I was younger I did, but not any more. I produce because I love the art and enjoy bringing to life the odd ideas in my head. But if by some chance I were to make it big, I would never forget my friends here at The Sector. This is my favorite sector on the internet. Not just because it's TRON, but because of all the great programs around that make it so much fun!
I really appreciate the compliment though - the fact that you think I got what it takes to make it in Hollywood. Thanks!

Yes, sir! A splendid 'ole production! Would've been cool to see it on the big screen. Next time it will be on Dolby Digital/THX equipped auditorium, on a screen 6-stories high. Oooh, the IMAX!
Thanks for sharing the tidbits of what went on there! Was a fun read.

Yes, you hold regular Anti-Formatting riots and have a 200-acre sanctuary where you take all the discarded PCs you can find and boot them back up.

Well, I wanted to, but I was too chicken!
Get it - chicken? ... because they were chicken rights activists...
...
Ok, stupid pun.

Ok, I recieved a "thank you for participating" letter from the woman who runs the Emerging Filmmakers Series at The Little. An actual printed on paper and signed by hand letter, not just an e-mail. That was really cool.
Except... well, let me quote the letter, first sentence of paragraph two:
"I wish you continued success with your film (and animal rights) endeavors and hope to see more of your work in the future."
What?
What animal rights?
I produced the silly animated music video, NOT the chicken documentary!
Oh man!
She got my name right, and the name of my production. But it just goes to show ya - the chicken people really DID steal the show that night. They were like rock stars and all the activists loved them, and apparently even the coordinator of the event has forgotten to remove that little remark as she personalized the letter for me!
Ok, if I want any publicity, my next production will have to be some kind of activist thing. Maybe I'll produce a documentary on the inhumane treatment spider plants! Yes - nobody treats spider plants with the proper respect these days! I'll get undercover footage of people inhumanely throwing away spider plant babies and EVERYTHING! Yes, I will have MY day in front of an activist audience that LOVES me!
